Should You Buy A Deep Fryer

An InstaPot might not be able to cook that perfect fried chicken recipe. However, its still an incredibly versatile gadget that takes the place of steamers, slow cookers, and even yogurt makers. Customers looking to make entrees like soup, steamed rice, beef and chicken, beans, baked potatoes, and more should invest in an InstaPot. It typically cuts cooking times in half, while still giving the flavors and spices plenty of time to simmer. Its also affordable, with many brands going for less than $100. The low price and functionality make it a popular choice for people looking to make meals in a short time frame.

However, for people looking to make fried food, the only option is to invest in an actual deep fryer. In addition to the frying capabilities, a deep fryer also comes with safeguards that help prevent sparks and electrical fires. Most deep fryers can be purchased for less than $50. That makes it an economical choice for both home chefs and professionals. To learn more, see our guide to the best deep fryer.

Frozen chicken is no problem but some people prefer to use defrosted meat. If you were cooking outdoors then the Instant Pot is great for camping trips as long as you have access to electricity.

How To Pressure Cook A Whole Chicken In An Instant Pot

Here are some simple step by step by step directions for cooking a whole chicken in your Instant Pot or other electric pressure cooker, the full recipe is at the end of the post.

  • First, make sure your chicken is fully defrosted and that youâve removed the giblets so that it will cook through properly.
  • You do not need to rinse the chicken but you can carefully pat it dry with a paper towel.
  • Now you can apply the simple spice and herb rub which is made up of paprika, thyme, salt, pepper and oil. This adds a little flavor to the chicken and gives the skin a pop of color, otherwise the chicken looks very pale when its cooked.
  • If you want to add even more color to the finished chicken then you can carefully brown the chicken before you cook it under pressure. Youâre never going to get crispy skin like you will with an oven roasted chicken as we are using steam and pressure too cook it so the skin cannot crisp up in the same way.

  • Save the broth after cooking. Make sure to strain the chicken broth after cooking the chicken in it. Whether you started with chicken broth, vegetable broth or water, the remaining liquid will be very flavorful to use in soups or to cook grains.
  • Dont skip the seasoning. It not only flavors the dish, but the salt will allow the chicken to hold on to moisture, meaning that every bite is extra juicy.
  • Let the Instant Pot naturally release pressure. This process allows the chicken to continue cooking. If you release it quickly, your chicken wont be cooked through and can be dry.
  • Use an instant read thermometer to check that your chicken is cooked through. The internal temperature should register at 165F. If the chicken is not at this temperature, seal the Instant Pot and cook for an additional couple of minutes. The cooking time may vary slightly depending on the thickness of your chicken breasts.

How To Make Instant Pot Chicken Breasts

I tend to cook skinless boneless breasts most often, simply for the ease of it. And my method is so simple its scary:

  • Remove the chicken breast from the fridge or freezer and add to the Instant Pot insert. Use a metal rack with handles if youd like, or you can skip the rack if you prefer.
  • I typically cook 3 breasts at at time for my little family, which yields about 6 cups of shredded chicken. To cook more chicken breasts at once, layer the chicken side by side if frozen or stacked if fresh.
  • Add 1 cup of water plus kosher salt and black peppercorns.
  • Set the cooking time for just 10 minutes.
  • Be sure your chicken has an internal temperature of 165° F to be cooked through.
  • BOOM! You instantly have cooked chicken breast that is juicy and tender and ready to eat as is or use as a base for so many more recipes.
  • Once the pressure cooker has finished the 10 minutes cooking time, simply flick the quick release the lever , allow the steam to escape, and use tongs to pull the chicken straight from the pot to a cutting board to shred, slice or dice for whatever means youre it preparing for.

What To Do If Your Chicken Is Not Cooked

If your chicken is less than 165 degrees F when you check it after cooking, cook it for another 1-2 minutes at high pressure. The Instant Pot will come to pressure much more quickly the second time since it is already hot. Remember to close the lid and turn the steam release valve to the sealing position.
