How to Use Delay Start on the Instant Pot

This really is very simple. I use the pot in pot method which means less cleanup and no chance of getting the dreaded burn message.

First, add a low trivet to the inner pot and then add 250ml of cold water. Now add a container which is safe to use in the pot . Put 1 part oats to 2 parts of milk in the container and gently stir.

Put the lid on and set on high pressure for 10 minutes . I always make mine the night before using the delay start function. This will vary slightly from pot to pot, but in mine you press the delay start button after selecting your time under pressure, change the time using the buttons in the top right-hand side and then press start.

When the time is up, leave under pressure for at least 5 minutes, but I have left mine for anything up to 90 minutes and it is always perfect. Do a quick release if necessary and then remove the lid. Now stir together, serve and enjoy.

As you can see this really is simple and very practical.

The Instant Pot Keeps Beeping

Its normal for the pot to beep as it starts to heat, beep when its starting the timer, and beep when the timer is done. If its beeping otherwise, that usually means something is wrong, and you should look to see if theres a code flashing on the screen. This most often indicates an overheating issue that your Instant Pot wants you to know about ASAP.

Instant Pot Manual Setting

Depending on the model, the Instant Pot manual setting button will either say Pressure Cook or Manual. This is the setting youre likely to use the most. The temperature, pressure level and cooking times can be adjusted on the control panel.

  • Turn the Instant Pot on. It should say OFF on the screen, indicating its in the Stand-By mode.;
  • Select Pressure Cook button . The default settings will be Normal mode on High pressure. If you press the Pressure Cook button again, it will change from Normal mode to Less or More, which simply changes the automatically programmed cooking time. Less would be 20 minutes and More would be 45 minutes.;
  • Use the +/- keys to change the cooking time in each mode. In most cases, you will leave it in Normal mode and simply adjust the time as needed.
  • Use Pressure Level button to adjust the pressure level; press it to toggle between High and Low. For most recipes, you will use High pressure except for cooking more fragile foods like fish, seafood or fast-to-cook vegetables.;
  • With the manual setting, you can use Natural Release or Quick Release or a combination of both once the cooking is done.;

Zojirushi Rice Cooker With Delay Timer

This Zojirushi rice cooker can cook a maximum of 3 cups of uncooked rice to produce approximately 6 cups of cooked rice. Its small rice cooking capacity makes it a great rice cooker for a single person, two people or a small family.

The Zojirushi NS-LAC05 has a delay timer which can be used to delay the start of a cooking cycle. You can program the rice cooker to cook porridge overnight in time for breakfast or to cook rice in time for dinner.

Check if the clock time being shown in the display is correct before you begin programming the timer function. If not, follow the instructions in the manual to correct the clock time.

Read the Zojirushi NS-LAC05 instruction manual for an explanation of using the timer. You basically use the clock time and program the timer to complete the cooking at a specified time, e.g. 7:30 or 19:30. This is why the clock time needs to be correct.

The delay timer has two settings. Press the timer button once for timer 1 which starts at 6:00 for cooking during the daylight hours. If you want to program the rice cooker for the evening, then press the timer button again for timer 2 which starts at 18:00. Use the up or down keys to advance or decrease the cooking completion clock time in 10 minute increments. Press and hold the button down to change the time quickly.

Instant Pot Multigrain Setting

Is Instant Pot Delay Start Safe to Use?

This setting is best suited to cooking tougher, whole grains like brown and wild rice, farro, millet and steel-cut oats; it can also be used to cook dry beans and a mixture of grains and legumes. We find that this is one of the most confusing functions for people because some of the recommended manual cooking times for grains dont match the pre-programmed setting times, so its hard to know when to use this function. Below is how to use the Multigrain setting on the Instant Pot.

  • Turn the Instant Pot on, it will say OFF to indicate the Stand-By mode. Add the grains, liquid and seasoning if you wish. Secure and lock the lid. Press the Multigrain button. The default setting is pre-programmed to set the pot to cook at High pressure for 40 minutes. If you press the Multigrain button again, you can adjust the mode from Normal to Less or More.

If desired, use the / + buttons to further customize the time. The cooking time may be adjusted at any time during pressure cooking.;

If cooking dry beans, ensure they are completely submerged in water; the same if youre making a mixture of grains and beans.;

How To Use The Instant Pot Slow Cooker Setting

Do you want to use the Instant Pot slow cooker setting? Heres exactly what you need to do to use your Instant Pot as a slow cooker

First, let me say that I got this info from reading a couple of Instant Pot user manuals online and from my own personal trial-and-error. I own the 7-in-1 Instant Pot and several different slow cookers.

Instant Pot Bean/chili Setting

The Bean/Chili setting button can be used to cook larger dry legumes such as beans and chickpeas in liquid or to cook chili or another type of stew that uses dry beans. The program settings use High pressure and result in different doneness of beans. When cooking beans, always use NR to release pressure after cooking is done. Below is how to use the Bean/Chili setting on Instant Pot.

  • Turn the Instant Pot on, it will say OFF to indicate the Stand-By mode. Add dry beans, liquid and salt to the pot. Secure and lock the lid. Select the Bean/Chili button. The default setting is pre-programmed to set the pot to cook at High pressure for 30 minutes. If you press the button again, you can adjust the mode from Normal to Less or More .;
  • Less mode 25 minutes at High pressure for a firmer bean texture or to cook black beans, dry lima beans, Navy beans,; black-eyed peas, Adzuki, anasazi, dry peas.
  • Normal mode 30 minutes at High pressure for a softer bean texture or to cook red kidney beans, white kidney beans , Pinto beans, black-eyed peas .;
  • More mode 40 minutes at High pressure for a very soft bean texture or to cook harder legumes like chickpeas and soybeans .

COOKING TIPS

Ensure dry beans are completely submerged in water. Dried beans double in volume and weight after soaking or cooking. To avoid overflow, please do not fill the inner pot more than to the ½ mark to allow for expansion.

Note: You can also use the Multigrain setting to cook most beans.

Is It Possible To Scale The Recipe Up Or Down

I usually make my porridge for 2 people, but it would easily be possible to make it for just 1 person by halving the ingredients in all pot sizes. You could also double the quantities in all size pots to serve 4 people. For larger servings simply scale up using 1 part oats to 2 parts of liquid depending on your pot size. Timings will remain the same although for larger portions I would allow a full non-pressure release to ensure the porridge is fully cooked.

Whats Up With All Those Knobs And Buttons

INSTANT POT DELAY START Timer program cook time how to Mexican Street Corn instructions

I know, there are so many. Good news! You can ignore most of them. I use my Instant Pot nearly every day, and Ive never touched the Rice, Porridge, or Soup buttons. I do, however, make rice, porridge and soup in my IP all the time, just by programming it manuallywhich you need to know in any case.

For now, were focusing on the buttons you need for most pressure cooking recipes. If it helps, just get masking tape and cover up those other buttons so that you only focus on the buttons needed for our test drive:

  • On the Instant Pot Duo: the Low Pressure and High Pressure buttons, the +/- Cooking Time buttons, the Manual button, and the Keep Warm/Cancel button.
  • On the Instant Pot Ultra: Cancel and Start buttons and the central knob

Clean Instant Pot Exterior Housing And Rim

Never use water directly on the exterior housing. Instead, use a dampened towel to wipe clean the surface. To clean the rim, soak the craft foam brush in foamy water and then use it to clean the area around the rim.;

You can also use a makeshift foam brush by wrapping a dampened microfiber cleaning cloth around a stick or chopstick. Push It around the rim to wipe It clean.

Im Getting An Error Code Message

Instant Pots use error codes to indicate specific problems. If a code is popping up, you should look it up to see what it means. You can find a list of the codes on the support page. C1, for example, means theres a faulty temperature sensor, C5 means that theres not enough water in the inner pot, and so on.

The Float Valve Is Stuck

That little float valve on the top of the lid is meant to loosely move between venting and natural pressure release. If this valve gets jammed, theres a problem. It usually means that the valve has become clogged with food. Unclog the valve, and then wash the lid all around the valve and make sure all bits of food are removed.

    What Do You Use A Cooking Delay Timer For

    So there you have it, theres a good list of units that included delayed cook timers but do you know what you would even use a delayed cook timer for?

    The most common reason to use a cook delay timer is to cook beans.

    Yes, with a pressure cooker you dont have to soak beans for hours in advance of cooking them but most people find that a soaking before cooking always results in a better tasting bean. Typically you would take your beans and wash them off in a colander over the sink and then put them in a pressure cooker along with the water you plan on soaking them in and eventually cooking them in.

    After a delay of 6 to 12 hours or in some cases a delay up to 24 hours your pressure cooker will kick on and finish cooking them automatically.

    Other things that can easily be put on a delay include chickpeas, potatoes, steel cut oats, or basically anything that is not going to get mushy sitting in water for hours on end and will not start going bad like meat or dairy products.

    Unfortunately it is not a good idea to setup a stew in the morning to cook later that afternoon. Perishable items should be prepped just before they are cooked.

    Can you use the delay timer to cook eggs in the pressure cooker? This one is debatable. If you buy eggs at the store and need to keep them refrigerated then I would say no but for those of you who raise chickens at home and regularly keep your collected eggs on the counter than I would say go for it.

    The Pot Is Getting Streaky Or Cloudy

    If you spotted streaks or clouds inside your pot after your first couple of uses, thats normal. Fats and oils tend to cause stainless steel to stain a bit . Fortunately, those stains wont affect your cooking at all, but they could be difficult to remove when hand washing. The pot is dishwasher safe, so try running it with your other kitchenware to remove streaks and smudges. Another solution is to mix a bit of vinegar on the residue to bring back the pots original shine.

    What Instant Pot Is Good For

    Instant Pot IP-DUO How-To Delay Timer EASY!

    The Instant Pot not only cooks food, but it keeps it warm for up to 10 hours. Its great if you need to keep food hot for a longer time or if you want to prepare it ahead of time.

    The Instant Pot works best for foods you would normally cook in your slow cooker. You wont get a crispy crust in the Instant Pot, but for soups, stews, beans and meat, the Instant Pot works great! It also works well for hard or root vegetables like potatoes, squash and beets.

    Because the Instant Pot does the job of so many appliances, one of the best features is its versatility. The Instant Pot steams food, can be used for canning, works great for boiling, and even has a sauté function . Its energy efficient and safe to leave on unattended. I mentioned the lack of odor as well, which is amazing, especially if youre cooking a more odiferous food.

    The Instant Pot allows you to cook with whole foodsrather than opting for pre-packaged convenience foods full of sodium and preservatives, so you can make healthy foods with fewer ingredients.

    For me, the biggest selling point is the way it speeds up cooking times and reduces kitchen clutter. If you own a rice cooker, a slow cooker, a steamer, a yogurt maker and a canning pot, you can get rid of ALL of them and opt for a single appliance. The digital timing and display is really nice and quite accurate.

    Dinner comes out quickly. You can cook on your schedule, rather than rushing home to put something in or take something out of the crockpot!

    Lets Try The Quick Release

    Back to our pot of water: Push the steam release valve to the venting position using a long-handled spoon or your finger. Just keep your fingers to the side and away from the top of the knob where the steam vents.

    This valve should stay open on its own once you nudge it. The steam will come shooting up and be a little noisy.

    Releasing all of the steam can take a minute or more. The more liquid in the cooker, the longer the release will take. With the 3 cups of water, it took mine 45 seconds.
