Determined to find the best method to cook spaghetti squash, I tested various methods for cooking spaghetti squashfrom microwaving and slow cooking to baking and pressure cooking. After cooking my weight in spaghetti squash, I can finally tell you that pressure cooking is the best and most effective way to cook this vegetable.
Ive extolled the virtues of pressure cooking before, and this is just more evidence of its awesomeness. My trusty stovetop pressure cookers have been workhorses in my kitchen for some time now, but these days, Im almost exclusively turning to my electric programmable Instant Pot.
Just Keep These Facts On Mind
- Cooking Time:;Instant pots do arrive in time accuracy, but in reality, it may feel vague. Because the pressure it generates needs time as well. And in addition, the cooking requires an approximate time specifically. So, if the manual says to cook for 10 minutes, you gotta keep few more minutes to make sure having an evenly cooked meal.
- Pour the Water Accordingly:;Dont flood the pot, putting a lot of water. The key to having a puffy yet soft tender meal is to add 2 cups of water if you are going to make 8oz of pasta. If 16oz or 24oz of pasta is your drill, then add 4cups and 6 cups accordingly.
- Dont Let Them Submerge:;Your pasta might submerge in the water when cooking, whereas it should be on top of the water floating. Because when the pasta is drowning in the water, its more likely to get overcooked and come all mushy and sticky. Thats why make sure your pasta isnt immersing in water entirely.
- Ensure Proper Heat for the Meat:;If you are expecting to add chicken breast or meat in your pasta, then you better locate them underneath, close to the surface so that it boils consistently.
- Release the Pressure in Due Time:;Never forget to discharge the pressure exactly after 5 to 6 minutes. It will allow the internal pressure to reduce so that when cooking is done, it retains the fluffiness and doesnt get mushy.
- Opt for penne, rigatoni or rotini pasta for softer and luscious taste.
Hence, you need to invest some of your time to find the plausible one.
How Long Is It Good For:
Serve:;The pasta can stay at room temperature for about 2 hours before it will need to be refrigerated.;
Store: Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. When you reheat the pasta, spritz some water on the pasta and then reheat it in the microwave.;
Freeze: To freeze spaghetti, you need to make it more on the al dente side so that it doesnt turn mushy after freezing and then defrosting it. To do this, cook on high pressure for 6 minutes instead of 7.;

Instant Pot Spaghetti Technique
Using different techniques will result in different textures of cooked pasta from the Instant Pot.
This is an important point, I want to talk to you about in more detail.
The manner in which you add your dried spaghetti to the pot, will make a difference to how it cooks.
I have taken the photos below to illustrate what I mean.
If you have a look in the photo on the left above, you will see that the spaghetti noodles are laid flat in both directions, reasonably close together.
If you have a look at the 2nd photo, you will see that the spaghetti noodles are criss crossed in diagonal directions.
The biggest thing to understand about the above is that the level of pasta in Image 1 has less depth than Image 2. This is important as it means that less water is needed to cook the spaghetti if it is added to the Instant Pot like the 1st image than the 2nd.
I like my Spaghetti with a bit of bite to it, this is perfect for recipes such as my Garlic Spaghetti. As this recipe is all about minimal ingredients and basic flavour combinations, we need to get the texture spot on.
Soft mushy over cooked spaghetti doesn’t cut it.
The technique of adding the spaghetti to the Instant Pot in image 2 results in non al dente soft spaghetti that has no bite to it.
You can use either method but know up front what your options are and how it will effect the end result.

Freezing And Storing Spaghetti
If theres a chance you have leftovers, theyll be even better the second day. I dont know what it is about Italian food, but its always better after the flavors have melded together overnight. One of my favorites for leftovers is Baked Chicken Spaghetti, it is so good!; Sometimes I secretly hope there are leftovers, just so I can have them the next day for lunch. Warmed up with a slice of bread and Im set!
- Storing: Like most dishes, this will keep beautifully in the fridge for 4-5 days.
- Freeze:;This will freeze for 3-4 months well. If I know Im going to freeze leftovers Ill try to under cook the noodles just a tad bit so they are really al dente. Using the quick release valve stops the cooking process. Once the spaghetti has completely cooled I will portion out in individual freezer safe containers or bags. Thaw overnight in the fridge and warm on the stove top or microwave. Enjoy!
Can I Use Jarred Spaghetti Sauce
To save on time, grab a 24-ounce jar of your favorite pasta or marinara sauce. You dont have control over what goes into the sauce, but its a convenient swap. Most of these products already contain a mixture of puree, diced, or puree. Plus, it has herbs, seasonings, and typically sugar.
I use unsweetened sauce, as the extra sugar may cause burning on the bottom of the pressure-cooked insert. Give it a taste and reduce the amount of salt as needed.

Cook A Whole Squash In An Electric Pressure Cooker
The electric pressure cooker can steam a whole two-pound squash in about 15 minutes. Remember that most electric pressure cookers need time to come up to pressure and release pressure post-cooking, so this technique takes about 35 minutes from start to finish depending on your cooker.
Add one cup of water to the cooker and then set its steamer basket or a metal trivet inside the pot as well. Pierce the squash all over with a paring knife, making about a dozen 1/2-inch vents for the steam to penetrate the squashs skin. Then add the squash to the electric pressure cooker, set for 15 minutes on high pressure, and cook away. When your 15 minutes is up, release the pressure and remove the squash. Give the squash at least 10 minutes to cool before halving and shredding.

How To Cook Spaghetti Noodles In A Pressure Cooker
The strange thing about cooking spaghetti noodles in your Instant Pot is that you cant stir the mixture while it cooks. That means you cant break up the noodles, preventing them from clumping together, during the cooking process.
To avoid clumping, its essential that you break the noodles into smaller pieces, and arrange them in a criss-cross manner as you add them to the pot. You can simply break the noodles in half, but I like to go a step further and break them into thirds for maximum non-clumping.
If your noodles to stick together for some reason during the cooking process, it is relatively easy to pull them apart with a fork when the cooking cycle is complete, but its nice to avoid having to do that as much as possible. I almost never have an issue when I break the noodles into thirds!

- Set the Instant Pot to;Sauté mode. Heat the olive oil and add the ground beef. Cook and crumble the beef, drain any grease.
- Stir in the seasonings.Break the spaghetti noodles in half and criss-cross them over the ground beef to prevent them from sticking together.
- Add the chicken broth and;undrained;diced tomatoes.
- Pressure cook for 8 minutes.;
- Flip the quick release valve. Stir in the cream cheese. Sauce will thicken upon standing. Serve!

To Make Ahead: The meat can be browned up to 2 days in advance.

For best results, cook the spaghetti for only 3 minutes at high pressure, so the noodles dont over cook when reheated, after freezing.
