Minimum Amounts Of Rice

One last rule of thumb to keep in mind is that youll need to cook at least 1 1/2 cups of rice in a 6-quart pressure cooker to get nice, even results. This is because the bottom of the pot isnt perfectly flat, but slightly concave. If you use less rice, the grains in the middle of the pot will not cook as evenly, since they wont be submerged in the water as much as the rice on the sides of the pot.

On the flip side, dont overfill your pressure cooker with too much rice, either! It should be half full or less when youre cooking any grains, beans, pastas, or other foods that can tend to foam up. I find that I get the best results when I cook between 1 1/2 and 3 cups of rice at a time.

  • TIP! By the way, you can always make extra rice and freeze the extra. Here’s how to do that.

Those are my best tips for cooking rice! Of course, you can also just follow the basic recipe below. Either way, enjoy!

What Kind Of Rice Do You Use For The Instant Pot

You can make any type of rice in the Instant pot but the cooking times and water amount you use will vary.

I personally love making Jasmine and Basmati rice and for these 2 varieties I use a 1-1 ratio of rice and water.

Here are some useful tips for different kinds of rice:

  • Brown Rice: 1.5 cups of water and 1 cup of rice. Cook for 22 minutes at high pressure and allow 10-minute natural release followed by a quick release.
  • Wild Rice: 2.5 cups of water to 1 cup of rice. Cook at high pressure for 20 minutes and allow for full natural release.
  • Jasmine Rice: 1 cup of water and 1 cup of rice. Cook at high pressure for 6 minutes and allow for 6 minutes of natural release followed by a quick release.
  • Basmati Rice: 1 cup of water to 1 cup of rice. Cook at high pressure for 6 minutes and allow for 6 minutes of natural release followed by a quick release.

The first step is to rinse the rice. Whether you are cooking the rice in the pressure cooker or stovetop, it is best to quickly rinse it to remove any dirt from it. Also, rinsing the rice also makes up for the small amount of moisture lost in evaporation during the cooking process. Therefore, we highly recommend this step.

Below you can find the variations of rice and their respective cooking time. Also, please watch the recipe video attached on how to quickly and easily prepare it in the pressure cooker.

You can also choose to select the RICE smart program button. This program cooks on low pressure and is best used for white rice. For rice with a firmer texture or thinner rice like Jasmine or Basmati, use the Less mode for rice with a normal texture or regular long-grain or medium-grain white rice, use the Normal mode for rice with a softer texture, use the More mode. You can change the modes by pressing the RICE button again. Use quick release at the end.

Results & Rice Texture

So what makes Instant Pot rice good? Well, it will definitely give you a different type of texture. The results of Instant Pot rice have more distinct rice grains than a rice cookerthis was made even more significant because I used short-grain rice, which is known for its stickier consistency.

Its different and not necessarily better or worse, depending on what you like or expect. You can perhaps keep tinkering with the time and water to rice ratios to dial it in, but this is one that I prefer. But I found that even adding ¼ cup more water takes the grains from distinct to something mushier.

Exactly How Long Do I Cook The Rice

While the exact amount of water you use depends on how you like your rice, the exact length of time you cook your rice depends upon your specific conditions. For example, altitude can make a big difference. If you are cooking a large amount of rice, you may need to add a few extra minutes to the cooking time. Thats why we provide a range of times for different varieties of rice.

The goal is to stop cooking when all the water has been absorbed by the rice. If you open the cooker, give it a stir, and find theres still unabsorbed water in the inner pot, then youll need to cook it a bit longer.

What Is Basmati Rice

Traditionally from India and the South Asian countries, basmati rice is a long-grain rice with a distinct aromatic flavor.

It comes in both white and brown varieties and is sometimes confused with jasmine rice. Unlike jasmine rice, basmati rice is a somewhat softer grain and does not have the same nuttiness that its cousin does.

Basmati rice is often served alongside Indian curry dishes or as the main ingredient in biryanis.

I guarantee you that this is not the first post on the world wide web on this topic, but as I learned in previous tutorial posts, like how to cook perfect quinoa, just because something already exists on the internet doesnt mean that another version wont be appreciated by someone . Cooking rice in an Instant Pot couldnt be simpler.

1:1 Water/Rice ratio White Rice 3 Minutes at high pressure with a natural releaseBrown Rice 22 minutes at high pressure with a natural release

Beth, you mean to tell me you can cook white rice in 3 minutes?

This is one of my favorite things to have cooking while Im making another meal, because its like borrowing time. Im already in the kitchen cooking or doing dishes or whatever, so its easy to throw in the rice and water into the IP and let it go while Im busy. Then, I pack up the rice in containers or plastic storage bags to keep in the fridge or freezer for later meals. It so SO handy to be able to pull out precooked rice whenever I need it, but without the convenience tax thats added on to precooked frozen rice at the grocery store. Its a small time investment with a big payoff.

Pressure Cooking Requires Liquid

Before we continue, we must mention the most important aspect of pressure cooking. It requires liquid. This is because the pressure is built by the steam accumulating inside the pot, which is produced from the liquid.

Whether youre cooking rice, chicken breasts, pot roast, carrots, stew or cheesecake, you will need at least a cup of liquid for the Instant Pot to do its job.

This is a total amount of liquid and can be in the form of water, stock, tomato sauce, juice, wine and liquids released from the food while cooking , or a combination of those. Amount of liquid required varies depending on the recipe and amount of food but as a rule of thumb, 1 cup is always a good starting point. Also, the food doesnt need to be completely covered or submerged in liquid to cook.

What If My Rice Is Too Hard With A : 1 Ratio

If your rice is hard or uncooked that doesnt mean next time it needs more water, that means, next time it needs more TIME. Did you wait for FULL natural pressure release?

Unfortunately, you cannot safe undercooked rice in the Instant Pot as putting the lid back on and turning the pot back on just leads to the dreaded burn warning. I recommend adding the undercooked rice to a soup or stew maybe 5 minutes before its done simmering.

How To Reheat Rice

Cooking Brown Rice Using Instant Pot Duo Plus ~ Simply amazing

When I reheat rice I always use it in fried rice. That way I know I warmed my rice thoroughly.

It is very important to heat all of your rice because of bacteria that can survive in cooked rice.

So heat your wok or skillet to hot and add your rice. You can reheat from frozen. Just stir it continuously until you see all of the rice is piping hot. Then serve.

You can also reheat the rice using the microwave but I never do this. If you do, add 2 tablespoons of water to an airtight container with the rice.

Put the container in the microwave and heat for 3 to 4 minutes or until it is really hot through.

Check if the internal temperature is at least 165 or hotter and serve immediately.

How To Cook Brown Rice In Instant Pot

Unlike white rice, the brown rice has its grain husk intact, which takes longer to cook. Using the Instant Pot to cook brown rice really speeds up the process.

Rinse 1 cup of brown rice once under cold water . Add brown rice to the pot together with 1 cup water and 1/2 teaspoon of salt or the same amount of stock without salt. If cooking 2 cups of rice, add 2.25 cups of water and or stock.

Set to Manual/Pressure Cook for 22 minutes on HIGH with 10 minutes natural pressure release , and then use the quick release. Total time is about 35 minutes.

How Much Rice Can I Cook

We recommend a minimum of 1 cup of dry rice directly in the inner pot. If youre cooking less, use the pot-in-pot method.

You can use the 1:1 recipe for any amount, but remember to never fill your inner pot past the halfway mark when cooking food that expands, such as rice.

If you are cooking a lot of rice, you may find you need to add a minute or two to the cooking time.

Do I Have To Use Natural Release Of The Pressure

Yes, you do.

Waiting for the pressure to drop naturally avoids the problem of rice sticking to the bottom of the inner pot.

If you are in a hurry, we recommend using Natural Release for 10 minutes before releasing the rest of the pressure using Quick Release. Just dont touch the steam release until at least 10 minutes have passed. Not if you want perfect rice, anyway.

How To Make Quick Coconut Rice In An Instant Pot

Instant Pot Duo 7 in 1 Electric Pressure Cooker ⢠Homekits ...

This Coconut Rice recipe will work in any brand of electric pressure cooker, including the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi, or Power Pressure Cooker XL.

I especially love this dish because its a quick and easy dump-and-go recipe. Unlike making rice on the stovetop, theres no babysitting or worrying about a messy spill of coconut milk.

With an Instant Pot / pressure cooker, all you need to do is add Jasmine rice, unsweetened coconut milk, water, and a bit of sugar and salt for flavoring to the pressure cooking pot. Seal the lid, set the cook time, and walk away.

Note: While some electric pressure cookers have a Rice button, I dont recommend using it for this recipe. Coconut milk may affect how the pressure cooker comes to pressure.
