How To Get Those Funky Smells Out Of Your Instant Pot

If I have one complaint about the Instant Pot it would be this: It is hard to get the leftover smells out! When I make Chicken Tikka Masala in my Instant Pot, it smells like Chicken Tikka Masala until I make something else that smells more powerful. The Instant Pot owners manual says that you should regularly take out and wash the silicone sealing ring with dish soap to get rid of smells. I have done this on several occasions, but it doesnt seem to completely solve the problem. I have a friend that bought an extra sealing ring. One she uses for her dinner-lunch main dishes and the other one she uses for yogurt making and less smelly food. That is a pretty inexpensive solution. But after an internet search, here are some other ideas that might actually get those smells out.

  • Soak your sealing ring in white vinegar. Dilute the vinegar with some water and allow the sealing ring to soak in the vinegar-water solution for at least an hour. Take it out and wash it with dish soap. Allow it to air dry and then put it back in.

  • Steam clean the entire pot out with vinegar. Vinegar to the rescue again! This time, try filling the Instant Pot with 2 cups of white vinegar. Press the steam button and run the steam cycle for about 2 minutes. Take the ring out to dry.

  • Steam clean the pot with water and lemon. Some people prefer the scent of lemon to vinegar. . Put 2 cups of water in the Instant Pot and lemon rinds. Run the steam cycle for 2 minutes. Take the ring out to dry.

    Instant Pots silicone ring is porous and absorbs odours easily that cannot be removed with dish or dishwasher soap. However, good news is it usually does not affect the taste of food. To remove the odour from the sealing ring, soak it in a solution of cold water and vinegar overnight, about every few months or as often as you wish. Place ring in the inner pot of Instant Pot or large bowl, cover will cold water until it is fully submerged, and add 1 cup white vinegar. Leave on the counter overnight, then rinse and make sure to place back in the lid correctly and most importantly tight.

    How To Clean Your Smelly Instant Pot Sealing Ring

    Were you one of the MANY people who received an Instant Pot over the holidays? If so, welcome to the cult. One of the first things I made in mine was pulled chicken tacos, riffed from a few blog recipes and the instructional manual. The Instant Pot is awesome for shreddy chicken in around 30 minutes. But the next time I pulled the pot out off my bookshelf-full-of-kitchen-stuff-and-not-books, a waft of cumin hit me in the nostrils. Oof. The Instant Pots rubber sealing ring takes on smell like a school-issued soccer jerseynot a breathable fabric.

    Its dishwasher safe, and most of the time that gets the scent out. But I dont have a dishwasher, and maybe you dont either, which is why youre here. Some people buy two rings to keep the savory separate from the sweet you can get and stop reading this. Yet two rings felt extraneous to me, person with an entire shelf of spillover kitchen appliances, pots, and specialty gelatin molds, so Id rather just clean it. Heres how.

    As a lot of cleaning in the kitchen goes, white vinegar is the answer. Soak the ring in white vinegar diluted with water, as long as you can stand it. I do this in my sink with a few glugs of vinegar and then water to cover, but you could do it in a sheet pan as pictured above or a plastic tub, whatever. After an hour or whenever you remember it was soaking, wash with dish soap and leave it out to dryin the sun is ideal.

    Layer Your Ingredients To Avoid The Burn Notice

    Thicker sauces, nut butter, tomato-based products as well as cream sauces are not thin enough to build steam. To prevent the burn notice from happening, always add water to the bottom of your insert and then layer the ingredients inside the Instant Pot insert. Start with your meat or produce first, then add the dense and starchy ingredients last on the top, making sure to not stir or mix before pressure cooking as directed.

    Cleaning The Lid And Its Parts

    Oils, aromatic seasonings, fats and liquids tend to settle into the Instant Pot’s seals and gaskets. Here’s a checklist for keeping it clean:

    • Check the steam release valve and red float valve. You’ll want to make sure they’re both free and clear of any food deposits or debris.;
    • Remove the anti-block shield, a silicone nub that covers the float valve from the inside. With the shield off, you can get a better look at the float valve to confirm any blocks or clogs. It’s a small part, so take care not to misplace or lose it.
    • Remove the silicone sealing ring. This part easily picks up strong odors. One method to rid it of any unwanted smells is to wash it separately in the dishwasher. Make sure to select a high-temperature cycle such as sanitize. The combination of high heat and detergent should remove most of the unpleasant odors present.

    The silicone ring found in the Instant Pot’s lid tends to attract odors quickly.
