Smart Program Pressure Cooking

Instant Pot Buttons – Timer Function

If you choose to use one of the pre-set smart program options, the steps are even simpler. Please refer to our post on Smart Program Instant Pot Buttons Explained for how to adjust each setting.

Step 1. Start the Instant Pot. Insert the inner pot into the cooker base.

Step 2. Add ingredients and liquids to the inner pot. Stir if needed or leave layered.

Step 3. Secure and lock the lid. Make sure everything feels well sealed.

Step 4. Select one of the Smart Program buttons. Pre-set cooking time and pressure level will display. You can leave it as is or adjust things like the pressure level from HIGH to LOW. You can press the Smart Program button again to cycle through the Less, Normal and More time options or use the and + buttons to adjust the cooking time further. If you make any adjustments to the selected Smart Program, they will be remembered next time you use it.

Step 5. Preheating & pressurizing stage begins followed by cooking under pressure as per program settings. Once the Instant Pot beeps again and the timer has reached zero, the cooking process is done.

Step 6. You can do a quick release or allow the built-up pressure to release naturally , or do both depending on the food/recipe.

Step 10. Once pressure is released, open the lid and stir or remove the contents.

Instant Pot Multigrain Setting

This setting is best suited to cooking tougher, whole grains like brown and wild rice, farro, millet and steel-cut oats it can also be used to cook dry beans and a mixture of grains and legumes. We find that this is one of the most confusing functions for people because some of the recommended manual cooking times for grains dont match the pre-programmed setting times, so its hard to know when to use this function. Below is how to use the Multigrain setting on the Instant Pot.

  • Turn the Instant Pot on, it will say OFF to indicate the Stand-By mode. Add the grains, liquid and seasoning if you wish. Secure and lock the lid. Press the Multigrain button. The default setting is pre-programmed to set the pot to cook at High pressure for 40 minutes. If you press the Multigrain button again, you can adjust the mode from Normal to Less or More.

If desired, use the / + buttons to further customize the time. The cooking time may be adjusted at any time during pressure cooking.

If cooking dry beans, ensure they are completely submerged in water the same if youre making a mixture of grains and beans.

Tips To Use The Instant Pot Air Fryer

Think youre all set? Wait up! Here are a few expert tips and tricks you wouldnt want to miss.

  • Make sure you spray a bit of nonstick cooking spray or oil in there before you add in the ingredients youre planning to air fry. This will help keep them from sticking to the inside of the basket.
  • If youre air frying frozen foods, remember to keep some space between them. This will help the hot air circulate, and the foods cook evenly and crisp up perfectly.
  • For larger chunks of food you might want to flip it over halfway through the cooking time.

How to Cook Easy Instant Pot Sweet Potatoes

You can reduce a sauce or stew on the Sauté setting after pressure cooking, but know that it only has one heat setting, and will boil quickly. Another option is to add a thickener, like cornstarch or a paste of butter and flour, after pressure cooking as well. When adding a thickener, be sure to set the pot to Sauté and whisk it evenly into the liquid, as it cooks.

When I got my very first electric pressure cooker it was a bit overwhelming. I pulled that thing out of its box and it had more buttons than a spaceship! Tips For Using Instant Pot

    Instant pots are multi-functional.

They come with a lot of buttons, and if you dont know how to use them properly, you wont be able to reap the benefits.

Here are a few tips you can keep in mind before using an instant pot.

    • Your instant pot comes with a user manual that details how the pot functions. Before you start using the pot, make it a point to go through the entire manual.
    • While pressure cooking, the pot uses the steam from the water to cook your food. So you should put at least half or one cup of water into the food that you are cooking. Instead of water, you can also add broth to make your food flavorful.
    • Explore the different functions of your instant pot. For example, change its temperature depending on the food that you are cooking for optimum convenience.
    • When you are cooking something at a set timer of 30 minutes, count in a little extra cooking time. The real work inside the pot begins after the water is completely warm and the pressure inside the cooker is ample. This process takes about 15 minutes, depending solely on the amount of food you are cooking.
    • The instant pot boils your food very well. But this can often lead to overcooking. I am sure you are not a fan of overcooked veggies or meat. So keep the time in check when you are using the pot for cooking food.

How To Start The Instant Pot

Step 1. Place the Instant Pot on a sturdy countertop or a table close to a power socket. Make sure there is plenty of open space above the pot as you will have steam eject from the lid up in the air if you quick release the pressure.

Step 2. Make sure the inner pot is inside the cooker base and is clean. Plug the power cord in. Instant Pot will switch on and the OFF status symbol will appear on the control panel. This is called a standby mode.

Step 3. Decide on which cooking method you want to use from the below scenarios. This will depend on what you want to cook. Usually, recipe instructions will guide you along here.

In general, your choices will come down to whether you want to Sauté food first and then whether you want to use a manual setting or one of the smart programs.

Why Do Most Recipes Use Manual Settings Instead Of Smart Program Buttons

One size does not fit all in most scenarios. This is true of the smart one-touch buttons on the Instant Pot too. While some may come in handy down the line, you should learn more about specific recipes before you begin relying on them. Using Manual/Pressure Cook button and adjusting time and pressure level by yourself gives you more control. Having said that, you can also adjust time and pressure level once youve selected once of the Smart Program function.

Pressure cooking is for boiling, steaming, and braising. For example, you wouldnt cook French fries or make a crusty loaf of bread from start to finish by pressure cooking.

What Is The Timer Function For

The timer function on your Instant Pot is so that you can delay the cooking period for a pre-determined amount of time.

This can be for any length of time up to the maximum of 24 hours. This means that if you have a long day at work you can prep your ingredients for dinner in advance.

Say you started early in the morning, you could place all of your ingredients inside the Instant Pot the night before you go to work.

Set the timer and forget about it. By the time you make it home from work, you will have a warm meal ready to be plated up and enjoyed. An Instant Pot is the perfect accessory for a busy life.

How to use the timer on an Instant Pot using presetsYour first step is to select the cooking method that you wish to use. The timer function works for all settings with the exception of saute and keep warm.

Choose a cooking program from the preset options. Working quickly, press the timer key to set the time period for the delay. This will alter the number of hours it is to be delayed. Use the + and keys to adjust the number of hours displayed.

After you have done this, press the timer button again. This will allow you to adjust the minutes shown on the display. Again, use the + and buttons to do this.

If you wish to cancel the timer function at any point, press the keep warm / cancel button. Once the countdown has run out, the Instant Pot will immediately begin to cook the food inside.

Reheating Saut Slow Cook Or Keep Warm Functions

Here are instructions for using the other 3 possible Instant Pot reheating functions Sauté, Slow Cook, or Keep Warm. I dont prefer these as much as Steam because they are either more hands-on or slower . The Steam function allows you to be both hands-free and fast!

The optional glass lid is very helpful when using any of these functions. Remember to include a bit of liquid so your food reheats moist instead of dry!

Heres how to do each one

Sauté Function Add a tablespoon or two of liquid to the insert pot. Add leftovers to the pot. Press the Sauté button. You can also warm soups this way just make sure to watch the pot and stir the soup frequently while it re-heats. Use the glass lid as needed.

Slow Cook Use this feature to re-heat soups, casseroles, sides, and even rolls or bread that you would normally bake to warm up. You put them either in the insert pot itself or in a container inside . Timing is equal to what youd normally do in a slow cooker its on the slower side. Use the regular lid or glass lid to cover the dish while its reheating.

Keep Warm This is great for casseroles or baked dishes, especially when you want to warm them more slowly. Put the food in the pot or inside a container in the pot. Press the Keep Warm Button. Use either the regular lid or glass lid to cover the dish while it slowly re-heats.
