To Make Greek Yogurt:
After the yogurt is made place cheese cloth over a fine mesh strainer and set it on a large bowl. Pour the yogurt into the strainer and allow it to strain for at least 2 hours or up to 6. . Scoop out the thick Greek yogurt and store in a container in the fridge for 7-10 days.
Whey from the yogurt will drain into the bowl and it can be discarded or saved and used for protein smoothies or shakes.
Can I use skim milk?
Yes! You can make non-fat yogurt in the instant pot using skim milk, but because skim milk is missing the fat that helps thicken the yogurt, add an extra tablespoon of yogurt starter for every quart of milk. So, for 1 gallon of skim milk and 6 tablespoons of yogurt starter.
Troubleshooting: Yogurt is runny and didnt set up.
This can happen if too much starter is added, or if the yogurt has not incubated for long enough. Leave it incubating, checking it every hour. It could also be from adding the starter when the milk was too hot, killing the active cultures.
Add flavors and mix-ins:
One your yogurt has chilled, add flavors, sweeteners or toppings, like:
- Vanilla extract

How Can I Tell When My Instant Pot Yogurt Is Done
After boiling and cooling, youll add a bit of live yogurt to your milk, then set the whole thing to cook on low for several hours this is the incubation period. We recommend a cooking time of seven to eight hours, but your yogurt will thicken in as little as three hours . At eight hours, it generally has a nice thickness and just the right amount of sour tang exactly what youd expect from traditional whole-milk yogurt. Push it a little longer , and youll get a thick and tangy yogurt .
Be gentle when checking your yogurts doneness and use a clean spoon each time. Agitation can lead to clumping or looser yogurt.
Instant Pot Yogurt Troubleshooting:
My Instant Pot Yogurt Didnt Set..;
So far this is the ONLY issue Ive ever had with homemade yogurt and its only occurred three times and only once with my instant pot. When it occurred in my instant pot it happened when I used the boil setting. Not saying that the boil setting is the issue, clearly thats what its for and lots of people use it successfully. Usually, yogurt doesnt set if the temperatures are off. A well-functioning thermometer will be your best friend when making homemade yogurt. Its critical to get the milk to 180 F. and let it cool to 100-115 F. ;The temperature also need to be maintained at 110-115 F as the yogurt ferments. Usually, the instant pot does this perfectly. If you used raw milk, the yogurt will naturally be a bit thinner.
My Instant Pot Yogurt Is Lumpy/Separated..
This can occur if the yogurt fermented for too long or the heat was too high. Strain it to remove some of the whey and mix it and see if that helps. Using a old started can also be the cause of lumpy yogurt.
My Instant Pot Yogurt Is Foamy and Smells Like Bread
Chances are some yeast got in there. This is why its important to keep everything sanitized while making yogurt. Even just placing the whisk on the counter or sticking your fingers in the milk can introduce yeast and unwanted bacteria into your yogurt.

Instant Pot Saute Setting
The Sauté is another non-pressure cooking program that can be used in place of a frying pan or flat-top grill. For recipes that call for browned onions or garlic, its important to sauté them before adding liquid to the pot as you will release a lot of flavor this way. Another reason to sauté first is for browning meat. Lastly, sautéeing before cooking is a great way to increase heat and reduce the amount of time your pot will take to come to pressure.;

Why Should I Make This Instant Pot Yogurt
1. Its tried-and-tested against competitors. After spending many nights researching the two most popular methods used to make Instant Pot yogurt traditional Boil and Cold Start I spent about a month testing them both, along with ingredient variations. While you cant go wrong with either , I prefer the Boil method, which is the technique this recipe uses.
2. It includes every single detail. The Boil method lets you use any kind of milk , and you can add texture and flavor enhancements without worry. Its also pretty traditional as far as yogurt-making goes, and will teach you the best practices for making yogurt at home. I included all the options in our recipe, so you can make it however you like it.
Which Milk To Use
If you are not using the boil method the best milk to use is ultra filtered and ultra pasteurized milk. The most common milk available in most grocery stores is Fairlife. The more fat that is in the milk reflects the thickness of the yogurt. This is why you want to use whole milk.;
If you use 1% or 2% milk you might just need to strain it for a thicker texture. You can also incubate or cook it longer about 10 hours.;

Pro Tips For Delicious Soy Milk
Make sure you start with a clean, dry pot, if you have an extra INSTANT POT SEALING RING, use it. Use a clean, dry NUT MILK BAG, PITCHER, and a clean spatula.;
Use good quality soy beans. The taste, flavor of soy milk depends upon the quality of soy beans.
Soak the soy beans for 24 hours or more , for a creamy, rich soy milk.
Discard the outer skin from the soy beans, removing the skin from the soy beans gives soy milk a nice creamy, smooth texture.
Use a good blender, to blend the beans to a smooth puree.
Stir the soy bean mixture occasionally to prevent any mixture sticking to the bottom. When stirring the mixture, make sure the spatula touches all the way to the bottom, to mix the bean mixture.
Once the soy bean mixture comes to a boil, it rises quickly, discard the foam and continue cooking.
The foam eventually settles down and you will notice a thin, delicate layer known as yuba formed on top of the mixture, thats when the soy milk is ready.;
Use a good quality NUT MILK BAG or fine mesh strainer to strain the soy milk.;
Do not forget to add a pinch of salt. Salt acts as a preservative.

Pour Milk Into Your Instant Pot
For 8 cups of finished plain yogurt, you’ll want to start with 2 quarts of milk. Feel free to use whatever kind of dairy milk you like: whole milk, 2%, or skim are all fine. If you’d like a richer yogurt, you can even sub in cream for some of that milk . For non-dairy yogurt, you’ll need a different recipe; here’s one for coconut yogurt.

Ingredients Used As Well As Substitutions And Additional Flavours
- Heavy Whipping Cream – I used Land O’Lakes
- Powdered Sugar – I used So Nourished 100% Powdered Erythritol.; You can also replace this with any confectioner sugar but make sure you taste it and adjust adding more if needed
- Brown Sugar – Use Lakanto Golden or any other brown sugar.; Brown sugar has a little molasses added to it and therefore will give the end product a slight hint of caramel flavouring.
- Maple Syrup – Use Lakanto Maple Syrup or any other maple of syrup
- Coconut Extract – Add a single drop at a time as the flavour of extracts is very strong.
How To Make Homemade Yogurt In An Instant Pot
HEAT THE MILK I like to start my yogurt on the stove top by steaming the milk and slowly bringing it up to 180 F. while stirring regularly. Most Instant Pots with a yogurt feature includes a boiling option when you press the Yogurt button. This will heat your milk to the right temperate in the instant pot. This takes like an hour, but its a great option if you want to set it and forget it. The first time I used this feature my yogurt didnt turn out as thick so Ive been kinda nervous to use it again. You can also use the saute feature on your Instant Pot to heat your milk; however, I find it much easier and quicker to heat the milk on the stove. Choose whatever works best for you. Even though my milk is already pasteurized, steaming the milk helps kill off any nasties that could have found their way into the milk.
COOl IT AND SKIM Once the milk has reached 180 F., remove from heat and let it cool down to about 100-115 F. ;Some sources say 115 F. is the ideal temperature to cool it to. Mine is usually always 110 F. If the milk is too hot, it will kill the cultures, if its too cold it wont react with the cultures effectively. You can use an ice bath to cool the milk down quicker or just keep stirring to help the milk cool faster. This is what I do. Once cooled, remove the skin that will form on the top. Removing this skin will give your yogurt a smooth, finished texture.

Using Dried Blueberries To Flavor Instant Pot Yogurt
This started as kind of an experiment on how to flavor my yogurt while it was incubating . I bought Trader Joes dried wild blueberries. I added a cup of dried blueberries to my milk, yogurt starter and creamer. When it was cooking I was thinking it was not working but the blueberries dropped to the bottom of the pot.;
The results were delicious. The blueberries rehydrated and we juicy and spread a mild blueberry flavor throughout the yogurt. I cannot wait to try this with other dried fruits like strawberries and apples. Check out below on how else to flavor your yogurt after making it.;
Instant Pot Rice Setting
This button is made for cooking medium and long-grain white rice. The Rice setting uses low pressure and a 10-minute natural release is recommended for perfect results, however, we found that 2-3 minutes natural release followed by quick release is sufficient. Below is how to use the Rice setting on Instant Pot.
- Turn the Instant Pot on, it will say OFF to indicate the Stand-By mode. Add rice, water or stock and seasoning if you wish. Secure and lock the lid. Press the Rice button. The default setting is pre-programmed to set the pot to cook at Low pressure for 12; minutes, which is suitable for slightly larger rice kernels. If you press the button again, you can adjust the mode from Normal to Less or More .;;
- Less mode 8 minutes at Low pressure tender but firm to bite texture; great for thinner white rice such as Basmati and Jasmine rice.;
- Normal mode 12 minutes at Low pressure for normal texture white rice; great for regular medium to long-grain white rice and for more al dente Arborio risotto rice.
- More mode 15 minutes at Low pressure for softer texture white rice; great for slightly softer risotto.;
If desired, use the / + buttons to further customize the time. The cooking time may be adjusted at any time during pressure cooking.;

How To Make Instant Pot Fat Free Yogurt
Can you use skim milk to make yogurt in your electric pressure cooker?
Yes, you can, with a few important tips.
- I have found for nonfat yogurt, 3 tablespoons of yogurt added to ½ gallon milk works best.
- Nonfat yogurt will have quite a bit more liquid on the top than yogurt made with full or reduced-fat milk.
- Just carefully drain off the layer of liquid that forms on the yogurt and discard it.
- As nonfat yogurt sits, the liquid will begin to separate again, just mix into the yogurt before serving.
Can I Sweeten No
Yes! You can sweeten it by adding sweetened and condensed milk or liquid coffee creamer to the milk before you start the fermenting process. You can also sweeten it after the fact by drizzling maple syrup or honey over your individual serving.
My kids took a few batches to adapt to the flavor, so I did sweeten it in the beginning. With each batch, I reduce any sweetener a bit to get them used to it. Pro parenting tip: if your kids are very brand loyal, put some yogurt in an old clean container of their favorite brand.

Its the absolute easiest way to make yogurt at home in your Instant Pot. With a traditional Instant Pot yogurt making method, you heat the milk, then cool it to a certain temperature, and then add your starter and cook it for 8 hours.
With the no-boil method, you simply add everything to your pressure cooker, push the yogurt button, and wait 8 hours. Its so creamy we use it in place of mayo in tons of recipes, including this Chicken Salad With Dill and Instant Pot Potato Salad.

Bonus: How Make Thickened Yogurt
For thick Greek- or Icelandic-style yogurt, spoon the yogurt into a strainer lined with a kitchen towel, coffee filter, or cheesecloth and allow to drain in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours and up to overnight. The liquid that drains off is protein-rich whey. The author of the yogurt recipe profiled here, Daniel Shumski, suggests using it in place of water in your favorite bread dough or pizza recipes. But you can also use it in place of buttermilk in my favorite biscuits, or stir it into smoothies.
