Can You Use Pyrex In Instant Pot

Instant Pot Chicken Burrito Bowl (Better than Take-Out!)

Ive been happily using my Pyrex glass bowl in my Instant Pot for Pot-in-Pot cooking for quite some time.

This bowl has been used about a hundred times with meals that Ive made like our reader favorite Teriyaki Chicken or in recipe testing for my Instant Pot Creations Recipe Ebook.

Ive used it to cook frittatas, french toast casseroles, rice, quinoa and desserts.

Using pyrex for pot-in-pot cooking in my Instant Pot has always been successful and I never once worried about it until

Recently, a reader asked if Pyrex was safe to use in the Instant Pot since she had heard conflicting information.

I WILL ALWAYS do my best to share the most accurate information and would never encourage doing anything that might cause any harm.

So I decided to do some research of my own to find out exactly what the rules are about using Pyrex glass in the Instant Pot for things like pot-in-pot cooking.

How To Make Our Instant Pot Egg Roll Bowls Recipe:

When you are ready to get started, pull out your Instant Pot and press the saute button.

Once the screen reads HOT add in the ground pork along with the soy sauce, garlic powder, ground ginger, pepper, and salt and brown the meat.

After the pork has been browned, if there is any extra fat, drain the meat and return it to the Instant Pot.

Now, turn off the Instant Pot by pressing the CANCEL button and pour in the chicken broth and add the bag of coleslaw mix on top, but DO NOT stir the ingredients together.

Put the lid on top and lock it into place and turn the valve to the SEALING position.

Next you will need to press the MANUAL or PRESSURE COOK button and set the timer for 0 minutes.

When the timer is up move the valve to the VENTING position to prefer a quick release of the pressure.

After the pin drops down signaling all the pressure is out, carefully remove the lid and give every thing a good stir.

Then serve it into bowls and top it with your favorite sauce!

A Pot In Pot Cooking Method On A Trivet

Testing Method: We added a trivet and 1 cup of cold water in the Instant Pot. Add in the container and pour 1 cup of cold water into the container as well.

  • Liquid: 1 cup cold water in the inner pot and 1 cup cold water in the container
  • PIP Container Location: on a trivet
  • Pressure Cooking Method: High Pressure for 10 minutes, then Natural Release for 15 minutes

*Note: for consistency, we repeated the same procedure for every container.

What You Should Know About Your Instant Pot

In case youre intimidated by your Instant Pot, all you need to know is in the photo below. When the floating valve in the lid pops up youll know your Instant Pot is pressurized, and the cooking cycle should begin soon after.

When the natural release is done, you move the steam release valve to venting and then the remaining pressure will release through the top. Youll know its safe to open the lid when the floating valve has dropped again, signaling that the pot is no longer pressurized.

When To Use Pot In Pot

It can be hard to know what dishes require pot in pot cooking and what dishes are best cooked right inside the inner pot. I have found the following dishes to be best suited to PIP cooking in the Instant Pot.

  • Recipes that don’t require liquid-like meatloaf or Instant Pot Lasagna.
  • Recipes that don’t use a full 1 or 1.5 cups of thin liquid, as you need that liquid in order for pressure to be reached in an electric pressure cooker.
  • A recipe that has a thick gravy or sauce.
  • Recipes that require a water bath or “bain-marie” like such as cheesecake or creme brulee.
  • To steam vegetables or delicate foods.
  • To cook two recipes separately but at the same time.
  • A dish that contains dairy, such as oatmeal. Remember, dairy can cause a burn notice during pressure cooking.
  • To reheat a meal.

Keep in mind that the quantity of food you can cook in a pot-in-pot container will be less than what you can cook directly in the inner pot. You might need to adjust recipe quantities.

Quality Of The Glass Matters Most

Before you put a glass bowl in the pressure cooker, you should first understand how the quality of the glass makes a difference. Only use glass that can withstand high temperatures.

Tempered glass can withstand temperatures of up to 470 degrees Fahrenheit. Pressure cookers have a maximum temperature of 212 degrees Fahrenheit. In other words, dont worry. Tempered glass is regular glass, but they strengthened it with chemical or thermal treatment.

You still dont want to put a tempered glass bowl in a pressure cooker at a higher temperature, but dont worry about a pressure cooker. Before you use it in a pressure cooker, to avoid problems, you may want to check the instruction manual to see that you can use it there.
