The Instant Pot Is Taking Too Long To Start The Timer

Remember, Instant Pots take time to heat up. For pressure cooking and other modes, the Instant Pot will take a pretty significant amount of time, usually 10 to 15 minutes, to heat up and bring the pressure up to proper levels, and then start the timer. So when a recipe says pressure cook in Instant Pot for 5 minutes, you should always mentally add the extra time beforehand. If it still seems like its taking too long, check your settings carefully to make sure you are in the right mode.

What Should I Do When I Get An Instant Pot Burn Notice

You may notice at some point that your Instant Pot is trying to warn you that your food is about to burn. This is a good thing! It doesnt mean your food is burnt. The burn notice is your friend and is there to prevent your meal from tasting like charcoal!

Once your pressure cooker reaches the Burn notice temperature, the Burn sign will display and your Instant pot burn message will let you know that something needs to be done. This is a good thing!

Instant Pot Burn Notice Step One:

You need to turn your Instant Pot off right away and release the steam. Any further cooking and your food will burn inside the Instant Pot.

Pay attention to how many minutes your food has been cooking so you know how long to reprogram your recipe once you restart the cooking process.

You should pay close attention to your Instant Pot display as it cooks. Error messages and the Burn Notice can help you.

Its easy to set it and forget it but you do need to check in every few minutes just incase you get that dreaded Instant Pot burn notification.

Instant Pot Burn Notice Step Two:

Once the steam has dissipated, you will need to investigate your meal. This may mean checking to see if any food has stuck to the bottom of your pot and giving the food in your recipe a good stir.

Also check you have enough water or liquid in the pot for your Instant Pot recipe to continue cooking without a further burn notice.

Instant Pot Burn Notice Step Three:

How To Finish Cooking After The Burn Notice

Finishing your meal after a burn notice will depend on where you were in the cooking process and the ingredients.

TIP: If you get the burn notice while cooking any ingredients that contain thickeners , you will likely get the burn notice again if you try to pressure cook it. In these instances, I recommend using Sauté mode to finish your meal. Stir constantly like you would when cooking on the stove. It will take longer to finish but will be much quicker than getting the burn notice multiple times.

Browned Bits Were Not Scraped Off Properly

I make a lot of meats that require searing the meat first. When you do this, browned bits will adhere to the bottom of the pot. If you dont deglaze the pot properly before moving on to the pressure cooking phase, the pot will give the burn notice. To prevent this, make sure you scrap up all the browned bits before turning on the pressure cook.

Reason #: Using Ingredients That Absorb Water

Why Does My Instant Pot Say Burn from 30daysblog

What made my Arroz con Pollo recipe so hard to convert was because of the rice. What I didnt know then, was that rice absorbs liquid, so it makes it a tricky ingredient to cook with in a pressure cooker because the liquid needed to create pressure is also being absorbed by the rice. And when that happens, the rice will burn on the bottom .

    Problem Solution
Rice dishes that produce BURN messages. Use the Rice Cup that comes with the Instant Pot to measure the rice, but use a standard measuring cup to measure the liquid. This will ensure you have a little more liquid than rice.
Pasta dishes that produce BURN messages. Layer the pasta on top, in a criss cross pattern, but dont mix it in. Place other ingredients on top of pasta. Sauté off extra liquid.

Food Might Have Spilled Onto The Heating Element

Sometimes, especially while cooking soups and broths, stuff can spill out of the inner pot and drip down on the heating element underneath. In this case, too, the Instant Pot will display the burning sign. You will need to remove the pot and clean the element and the bottom of the pot before starting it again.

I Added Liquid Like I Was Told But Things Went Wrong

When an Instant Pot recipe calls for liquid, its being very specific, especially when it comes to pressure cooking. This needs to be a true liquid, usually water or chicken/vegetable stock, but some recipes call for anything from juice to beer. You cannot use a sauce or a liquid with any thickeners , which wont add enough of the needed pure liquid to the mix something thats needed to create steam. Doing so results in burnt foods and other problems. Pressure-cooked meals usually require at least one cup of liquid to work properly. Instant Pots will often warn you if they sense a lack of liquid, but it pays to understand what the recipe requires. Add sauces and thickeners after the cooking is completed.

Recipe Contains Tomato Products Or Prepared Sauces

Recipes containing products like tomato paste, tomato puree, tomato sauce, cream of chicken, cream of mushroom and alfredo sauce tend to scorch on the bottom while the Instant Pot is coming to pressure.

These ingredients are not thin enough to build steam and some contain fillers like corn starch, flour or cheese which tend to scorch. I see lots of complaints about chili recipes and pasta sauces causing the burn notice.

How To Avoid Burn Message On Instant Pot

10 WAYS to Avoid Instant Pot BURN | How to save “burning” food

To avoid the burn message on your Instant Pot, always make sure there is no food stuck at the bottom of the inner pot . The best example is my recipe for the Instant Pot Chicken Thighs. You need to saute the thighs first, then remove them onto a plate, deglaze the bottom of the pot by adding required liquid and scraping it with a wooden spoon, then placing a trivet inside and arranging the meat on top.

If you are making pasta dishes , always make sure you scrape any food bits from the bottom of your inner pot after sauteing onions and garlic. If adding tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes, add them last and in the center of the dish, avoiding it touching the sides of the inner pot. Do not stir the dish. Pressure cook according to the instructions in the recipe.

It is recommended by the Instant Pot brand to avoid thick cream sauces when pressure cooking, as it will prevent the IP from coming to pressure. Add cream cheese, heavy cream or thicken the sauce with cornstarch and half and half after your food is cooked. Use the saute mode to thicken the dish.

It seems that 8qt Instant Pots tend to get burn message more often, and my assumption is that while the 8 quart IP requires more liquid to come to pressure than the 6 quart IP, most recipes do not include the info to adjust that according to what IP you are using.

    Deglaze Inner Pot After Sauteing

After sauteing and before pressure cooking you need to deglaze the inner pot. Deglazing involves adding a thin liquid like wine, water or broth to the hot surface and scraping the bottom with a silicone scraper or wooden spatula to remove the caramelized and brown bits that are stuck.

Deglazing adds wonderful flavor to your dish, but more importantly, it cleans the inner pot. So any liquid that you add will make full contact with the bottom of the inner pot and that allows the sensor in the Instant Pot to properly register temperature and pressure.

What Are The Mistakes Im Making And How Can I Troubleshoot Them

Why Does My Instant Pot Say Burn?

If you are making any of these mistakes or want to avoid them, read on. Youll save yourself the inconvenience of going through the above drill. All of these mistakes lead back to the same thing: not enough liquid and steam to create the ideal conditions for pressure cooking.

Mistake #1: Not adding enough thin liquid to the pot

Weve gone over this. But allow me to give you a few more details. Sometimes we think there is enough liquid in the pot. However, after sautéing at high temps, the liquid you added originally can thicken or dry up. Result? Burn message!

Solution: A good rule of thumb is to always have one to two cups of total liquid in the pot just before pressure cooking, especially when cooking meats for a longer time. You can always cook down the excess liquid after the pressure cooking cycle is over.

Mistake #2:The liquid youve added is too thick

Thick liquids like tomato sauce, cheese, heavy cream and thickening agents like cornflour can be a problem.

Solution: Heres what you can do to avoid the burn message with thick liquids.

Mistake #3: The food you are cooking has a lot of starch

Rice is the obvious example here. It not only absorbs water pretty quickly, but also has a lot of starch that can make the rice stick to the bottom, triggering the burn notice. Some people have a lot of difficulty cooking rice because of these two problems. Never fear, I have some tips to get those perfectly cooked and fluffy grains of rice!

I Am Pressure Cooking But Steam Is Leaking Out

Is steam leaking out of the pressure valve, even when turned to the upper locked position? Its normal for a small amount of steam to leak from the valve while the pot is heating up, but if it continues to leak steam during the pressure cooking cycle, you may have a problem. This could be a sign that you need to clean out and reposition the valve. If this doesnt work, you may even need to replace the valve.

If steam is seeping out the sides, make sure the lid is properly locked for pressure cooking. If the lid seems to be fine, examine your sealing ring. A stretched or cracked ring should be replaced. If the ring has become dislodged, you can usually put it back into place without trouble. A loose ring can firm up if you put it in the freezer for a little while, but this will ultimately hasten the silicone decay, so you should plan on getting a new ring either way.
