Dont add salt, citrus juice, vinegar, tomato products, or things that contain them to your dry beans. Instead add them after the beans are tender, then simmer for a few minutes more to develop the flavors.

How Long To Cook Dry Beans In A Pressure Cooker

When determining how long to cook dry beans in a pressure cooker, it is important to consider the size of the bean. Smaller beans take less time to cook than larger ones.

For example, this recipe is for navy beans, which are on the small side. Cook them on high pressure for 20-25 minutes, then naturally release them for 5-10. You can add more time if you like softer beans.

The larger the bean, the more time. Pinto beans and great northern beans are larger and require more time. I typically pressure cook larger beans for 35-45 minutes with a 10 minute natural release.

And speaking of natural release, I mentioned my amazing new Mealthy Multipot 2.0 above. Its really revolutionary! It has a new auto pressure release function that is amazing you can choose to naturally release , quick release or the BEST one is the new auto-release.

This releases the pressure automatically a little at a time after the cooking cycle is complete. No muss. No fuss! You dont have to do anything! Super cool!

This is just a precaution in case any bags do end up popping or leaking. The baking sheet will keep the mess contained and is much easier to clean up than the floor of a freezer. I usually use a jelly roll pan, which is smaller than a full baking sheet and easier to fit in the freezer.

Additionally, a baking sheet makes it easy to freeze foods flat anywhere in the freezer, not just the floor. I often rest the baking sheet on top of other foods, close to the top of the freezer.

Healthy Substitute For Canned Beans

Did you know a one pound bag of dried beans equals 4 cans of cooked beans?!?

In cooking these beans, I only used water too.

No broth. No salt or other seasonings. Just good ‘ol plain water.

Why no broth? I wanted cooked beans with no additional flavors, so they are ready to use in any recipe.

Cooking them with just water makes them ideal to use in vegan or vegetarian instant pot recipes too!

However, feel free to substitute broth for the water or add your favorite seasoning to the dried beans before cooking, if you wish.

I make these white beans all the time to use them in my healthy chili recipe, White Chicken Chili.

It’s a favorite with family and friends throughout the year, but especially during the New England winter months.

Plus, it’s an easy dinner that can be made in an hour from the bag of dried beans to a big bowl of deliciousness on the table!

The Best Way To Freeze Soups Beans Broth And Other Liquid Foods Maximizes Storage Space And Makes Thawing Quicker And Easier

I am a freezer hoarder. I can admit that here, right?

My freezer is jammed to the gills — and not only with normal things like frozen fruit and chicken sausage, but also with the random bits of food that one tends to collect as a professional food writer and recipe tester.

This is all to say that I have learned a trick or two regarding Freezer Tetris and how to maximize space.

Since I had a few batches of pressure cooker beans in urgent need of freezing, I thought I’d share my favorite way to freeze soup, beans in their cooking liquid, and broth to both save space and make my weeknight meal prep a little easier.

Instant Pot Water To Bean Ratio

Get Instant Pot Recipes Navy Bean Soup

When I cook beans in my Instant Pot, the ratio is 4:1, meaning 4 cups water for every 1 cup/8 ounces dried beans. Some recipes call for slightly less water but I like adding enough water to create a flavorful broth. You can serve the beans in the broth, or drain it off and use it later for a soup recipe.

How To Cook Beans

Here are the ways on how to cook dried beans:

  • Overnight Soak ~ Let beans soak in 6 to 8 cups of water overnight or for at least 6 to 8 hours. Drain soak water and place beans in a large pot, add 6 cups of water and simmer gently for 1 ½ to 2 hours.
  • Quick Soak ~ Place beans in a pot and cover with 6 to 8 cups of water, then bring to a boil. Remove from heat and let soak for at least 1 hour. Drain soak water and add 6 cups of water to the beans back in the pot. Simmer gently for 1 ½ to 2 hours.
  • Instant Pot Method ~ Throw beans in an IP, cover with water, and set at high pressure for 30 minutes.

The Instant Pot method is definitely the clear winner as the easiest and fastest way to get tender cooked beans from dried.

I also prefer dried beans over canned because they are much more economical and healthier.

You can buy a bag of organic, non-GMO dried beans for a fraction of the cost of canned beans.

Plus, they aren’t processed, so you can control what ingredients are used in cooking them.

How To Freeze Bean Soup

Bean soups freeze very well and whats better than being able to have a warm bowl of made from scratch Navy Bean Soup whenever the craving strikes?

  • Use a ladle to transfer the completely cooled soup into freezer-safe plastic storage bags. Remove as much air as necessary and seal. You can place it all in one gallon sized bag or portion it out into several quart size bags for individual servings.
  • Lay the bags flat in your freezer until frozen solid. I recommend laying them on a rimmed baking sheet for this task in the rare case that a bag might open up or leak while freezing.
  • Once they are frozen solid they can be stacked and stored in your freezer. Be sure to label the bags with the date. I recommend using the soup within 4 months for the best quality.
  • Thaw the bags of soup completely in your refrigerator before reheating in the microwave or on the stove.

Protein-packed with tons of fiber and nutrition. Grab the saltines and lets get cozy with a bowl of this old-fashioned Navy Bean Soup made fast and easy in the Instant Pot.

Can I Substitute Whole And Split Beans

Easy Instant Pot Baked Beans

What does this mean when it comes to making different recipes?

Well, the nice thing is that you can usually substitute whole beans for other whole beans if you are looking to change things up.

For example, if you want to substitute pinto beans for kidney beans, it will not affect the cook times.

However, if you try to substitute a red kidney bean that usually needs to cook for 30 minutes, with red lentils that can cook in as little as 3 minutes, your recipe will be an utter disaster.
