  • To Freeze: Keep in an airtight freezer-safe container for up to 4-6 months.

Can You Substitute The Water With Other Liquids

Substituting water for other liquids like soup stocks and broths adds a burst of flavor to the rice. Whether you choose to use only broth or a mix of broth and water, make sure there is still a 1:1 ratio between rice and liquid. Alternatively, for a creamier liquid like coconut milk, use about half as much, creating a 2:1 ratio of rice to liquid. This prevents the rice from cooking improperly or unevenly.

The benefit of cooking any variety of rice using the pot-in-pot method is that you can cook another dish on the bottom of the pot at the same time. For example, my Instant Pot Chipotle Burrito Bowls have dry black beans cook from scratch on the bottom of the pot, while a bowl of brown rice cooks on top of that in a separate bowl.

You can do the same thing with chicken and white rice, with the chicken cooking on the bottom of the Instant Pot while a bowl of white rice cooks on top. The thing to keep in mind when cooking two dishes at once is that both dishes need to cook in roughly the same amount of time. Ive listed plenty of pot-in-pot cooking times for you to refer to!

You can even cook chicken and cauliflower rice together, like in my Instant Pot Chicken Burrito Bowls.

Key Steps For Rice In The Instant Pot

  • Rinse the rice before cooking. Rinsing rice before cooking removes any dirt from processing, gets rid of starch that can make the rice sticky, and, Ive found, makes the rice taste better. According to Instant Pots manual, rinsing the rice also makes up for the small amount of moisture lost in evaporation during the cooking process.
  • Use the right ratio of rice to water. Instant Pot suggests any rice can be cooked with a one-to-one rice-to-water ratio, but during testing, we found this wasnt universally true both among Instant Pot models and other multi-cookers. Use slightly more water when cooking brown rice and wild rice to prevent undercooking and scorching. Plus, its better to err on the side of more water, since most rice varieties can be drained if theres excess moisture.
  • Pressure cook the rice on high. Lock the lid in place and set to cook at HIGH pressure for the following times:
  • White rice : 5 minutes
  • Long-grain brown rice: 10 minutes
  • Wild rice: 15 minutes
  • Let the rice natural release for at least 10 minutes. Using natural release for rice yields fluffy results and less likelihood that the rice on the bottom of the pot will stick or burn.

    What Is Chinese Sausage

Chinese sausage is made from fatty pork. It is normally smoked, sweetened, and seasoned with rose water, rice wine, and soy sauce. Depending on the brand, the sausage itself can be quite tough. But once cooked with the rice, it becomes melt-in-your-mouth tender. The fat and sweetness melt into the gooey rice and taste so good.

These days you can easily find Chinese sausages in an Asian market. Ive even seen Costco carry them a couple of times. If you cant find them in your local stores, you can also purchase them from .

How to Make the PERFECT Instant Pot Rice – White Rice, Brown Rice and Wild Rice

The most rice Ive ever cooked at one time is 3 cups of dry rice with 3 cups of water. I think you could probably go up to 5 cups of dry rice, as long as you dont fill the pot more than halfway full for safety.

Rice creates foamy, starchy water as it cooks, so you wouldnt want it to rise too high during the cooking cycle and damage your pot.

When doubling or tripling a recipe in the Instant Pot, the cooking time doesnt change. However, the overall time will be longer when you cook a larger quantity, because it will take longer for the pot to come to pressure when compared to a smaller quantity of rice.

Natural Pressure Release Vs Quick Pressure Release

Whats better? Hands down, no doubt > > natural pressure release. If you cook rice longer so you can do quick pressure release, with the hope to have the rice cooked faster overall, it gets sticky and mushy.

If you want fluffy rice, I encourage you to be patient and wait for natural pressure release. I timed all rice and there doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to the timing. Even the same kind of rice in the same amount has had different natural pressure release times.

How Much Rice Can You Put In The Instant Pot

Its important that you never fill your inner pot past the half-way mark when cooking rice. This includes rice and water together, so how much rice you can cook in the Instant Pot will vary by the size of your machine.

In the printable recipe below, youll cook just 1 cup of dry rice, but you can double or triple this amount based on what you need and the size of your machine. Youll always use a 1:1 ratio of rinsed white rice to water, so if you need to cook 3 cups of dry rice, youll use 3 cups of water.

Heres how much rice you can put in the Instant Pot:

    • 3-quart: up to 2 cups dry rice
    • 6-quart: up to 4 cups dry rice
    • 8-quart: up to 5 cups dry rice

Keep in mind that these amounts are all theoretical, because Ive never needed to make this much rice in a single day. These estimates are based on simple math equations.

Assuming that a 6-quart machine holds 24 cups, and you dont want to fill the machine more than halfway full, you wont want to make more than 12 cups of cooked rice in a single cooking cycle.

One cup of dry ricemakes roughly 3 cups of cooked rice, so 4 cups of dry rice makes roughly 12 cups of cooked rice. I always round down to be on the safe side, so you wont risk clogging your machine.

How Do You Keep The Rice From Sticking To The Bottom

If your rice is sticking to the bottom of your Instant Pot, this likely means there was either not enough water added or the rice is overcooked. To further prevent sticking, be sure to rinse your rice, stir the rice and water mixture before cooking, turn the Keep Warm function off, and use the Natural Release function when the rice finishes cooking. If following these steps still results in rice sticking to the bottom of the pot, add a tablespoon of oil before cooking.
