It’s So Much Faster Than Boiling Water

When it comes to the Instant Pot, one thing always comes to mind: less cooking time. Cooking pasta in the IP is a time saver in two ways: 1) You can build your sauce in the pot and then cook the noodles right in it, eliminating the need to boil noodles and make sauce separately. 2) You actually need to undercook your noodles, which means a faster cook time.

If you’re scratching your head at the idea of undercooked noodles, let me explain: Its very easy to overcook pasta in the Instant Pot because the pot is so well insulated and hot that the noodles continue to cook even after the lid is removed. That’s why it’s best to actually cook the noodles until they are only about halfway done. By the time the last few ingredients have been added and stirred all together, the pasta still has a nice al-dente bite to it and isn’t overcooked.

For the Cheesy Pasta and Chicken recipe above that means cooking your pasta for a cool 3 minutes on the “High Pressure” setting. It’s just enough time for you to set the table and toss a quick salad.

So yummy right??!! Its truly a grab your Instant Pot and set, then GO type of recipe.

Longer style kind of kinds of pasta like angel hair pasta, fettuccine, spaghetti can be done, you need to break the noodles in half. That way they can get submerged in the liquid that they are being cooked in. If you find your pasta is sticking together, try crisscrossing the noodles before you cook, this will help reduce that.

    How Much Water To Use

The ratio of pasta-to-liquid is approximately 1:2. This can be water, clear broth, milk, whatever you desire. The breakdown goes as follows:

    • 8 oz. pasta + 2 cups liquid
    • 12 oz. pasta + 3 cups liquid
    • 16 oz. pasta + 4 cups liquid

Note: Feel free to disregard this ratio if cooking pasta in a lot of liquid or sauce, such as the case for soups and chilis. Simply follow the cooking times as mentioned above.

How To Cook Plain Pasta In The Instant Pot

If youre cooking plain pasta in the Instant Pot, the process is oh so simple.

Add your pasta to the insert pot of the Instant Pot, followed by enough water to just barely cover the pasta. You want all of the pasta to be submerged in the liquid.

Close the lid and set the vent to the sealed position. Program the Instant Pot with the cook time you calculated using the formula above.

    Instant Pot Spaghetti Technique

Using different techniques will result in different textures of cooked pasta from the Instant Pot.

This is an important point, I want to talk to you about in more detail.

The manner in which you add your dried spaghetti to the pot, will make a difference to how it cooks.

I have taken the photos below to illustrate what I mean.

If you have a look in the photo on the left above, you will see that the spaghetti noodles are laid flat in both directions, reasonably close together.

If you have a look at the 2nd photo, you will see that the spaghetti noodles are criss crossed in diagonal directions.

The biggest thing to understand about the above is that the level of pasta in Image 1 has less depth than Image 2. This is important as it means that less water is needed to cook the spaghetti if it is added to the Instant Pot like the 1st image than the 2nd.

I like my Spaghetti with a bit of bite to it, this is perfect for recipes such as my Garlic Spaghetti. As this recipe is all about minimal ingredients and basic flavour combinations, we need to get the texture spot on.

Soft mushy over cooked spaghetti doesn’t cut it.

The technique of adding the spaghetti to the Instant Pot in image 2 results in non al dente soft spaghetti that has no bite to it.

You can use either method but know up front what your options are and how it will effect the end result.

Although you can definitely cook pasta in cold water, you risk overcooking because the starch has more time to release, she told TODAY. Its not as precise. There are some variations between pressure cooker brands, so we cant speak to the way that other brands cook. For example, weve heard that the Instant Pot Mini is pretty different and does not work as well as the standard size. So, only use the Instant Pot Mini for this recipe at your own risk!

Which Type Of Pasta Can I Cook In An Instant Pot

Quite honestly, I prefer to cook shorter pasta, like penne, rigatoni, ziti, but you can cook any type of pasta in an Instant Pot.

Theres one caveat when cooking long noodles, like spaghetti. First, you need to break the noodles in half to fit in your pot and then layer them in a criss cross pattern to prevent them from clumping together. Basically, just throw the long noodles in a messy pattern and you should be good to go.

The amount of time you cook on high pressure should be half the time your box of pasta calls for. So if the box says to cook the pasta for 8 minutes, cook it for 4 if the box says to cook for 12 minutes, cook it for 6. Ive followed this rule of thumb for regular pasta and even gluten-free pastas like Banza or Jovial and it turns out perfectly every time!

Use these easy step-by-step instructions to cook perfectly al dente pasta in a 6-quart Instant Pot / pressure cooker.

Pasta has been my Instant Pot nemesis ever since I fell in love with the kitchen gadget of the moment. In the past few years Ive become pretty confident when cooking in the pressure cooker. It only took a few weeks to get over my fear of releasing the pressure valve.

These days, I use the pressure cooker a couple times a week to make everything from rice, to a big pot of Crispy Pork Carnitas, to 20-minute weeknight meals like Chickpea Curry with Rice. But pasta is tricky.

That is, until I learned the Instant Pot pasta formula. It involves a tiny bit of math, but the payoff is perfectly tender pasta every time. Heres how its done.

Can I Cook Pasta In An Instant Pot

Instant Pot Spaghetti (with Meat Sauce!)

Yes! You can, and whats more I highly recommend it as a time saving and low-effort way to make pasta that is super flavorful and perfectly cooked. Heres why:

More flavor – Pasta cooked in the Instant Pot turns out more flavorful than pasta that is cooked with the sauce separately. The seasonings are mixed in with the water and liquid used to cook the pasts in the Instant Pot. The pasta cooks under pressure and absorbs all the flavors from the liquid. I like to add a good quality broth or bouillon to the liquid before pressure cooking, and this gives my super flavorful pasta every single time!

Perfect texture – The pasta comes out just the way my kids and I like it. A tad more done than al dente. The softer than usual texture is a hige hit with kids especially. If you like your pasta al dente and with some more bite, then simply reduce the pressure cooking time by a minute.

Naturally thick sauce No need to reserve that starchy pasta water to thicken the sauce anymore! Many stovetop pasta recipes call for reserving the pasta water to thicken the sauce. When you cook pasta in the Instant Pot, the starch from the pasta is not drained away. It stays in the cooker, and the sauce is naturally thickened. This means you can add lesser cream or cheese or other thickeners .

To Cook Spaghetti An Instant Pot

Start with your Instant Pot on a flat dry surface.

Take the Spaghetti, break it in ½ and use your fingers to slip it into the inner pot, separating the strands slightly as you go.

  • Add broken in half spaghetti to inner pot
  • Pour in enough water to just cover the spaghetti
  • Add a pinch of salt
  • Press the Pressure Cook button
  • One of the things I love about the Instant Pot is that it will make a few noises as you use it as it does the things to ‘ask’ it to do.

    • Set the pressure to high pressure
    • Then set timer by using the up and down arrows

Let the Instant Pot build to the right pressure, cook the pasta and then it will beep to let you know it is done

    • Press the quick release button and let the safety value deflate
    • Turn and remove the lid , and use oven mits to remove the inner pot, drain spaghetti into a colander

    Whole Wheat / Alternative Pasta

There is no need to make any adjustment to the formula if using whole wheat or alternative pasta. Because this method of cooking pasta is based on the recommended cook time on the package, any type of pasta can be cooked this way.

We tested this method with several varieties of whole wheat pasta and with several varieties of alternative pasta .

How To Fix Excess Foam Issue

    • Dont use any dairy as cooking liquid for cooking pasta in Instant Pot. If youre making a creamy pasta, like chicken alfredo pasta, add milk/cheese after the pasta is done.
    • Add just enough water to barely cover the pasta.
    • Add a tablespoon or so olive oil. Fat helps to reduce foaming.
    • Dont fill the pot over half way mark when cooking pasta. Instant Pot users manual suggests not filling the pot more than half way when cooking food that expand in volume.
