Bonus Boil Water In The Instant Pot With The Saut Button

Ever just needed an extra burner to bring some water to boil? Instant Pot to the rescue.

Simply add water and turn on the sauté button!

You can also use the sauté function to warm leftovers, brown meat or veggies that are part of your IP recipe anyway, or as a way to pre-heat the Instant Pot to help it come up to pressure more quickly.

To save time on coming up to pressure, turn on the sauté function with liquid in the pot as you prep your food and adding ingredients to the Instant Pot. The hot liquid will come up to pressure faster.

Note: Official Instant Pot instructions recommend against this practice. Ive never had a problem with it, but make sure you have a few extra minutes on the other side just in case, especially if youre cooking a tough roast or something that really needs all its time at pressure.

Boiled Eggs In The Instant Pot

It is amazing the different one minute made! The yolks were even firmer this time.

Cooking Times:

  • Natural Pressure Release 4 minutes
  • Ice Bath 4 minutes.

The eggs cooked for 4 minutes were also relatively easy to peel. The peel came off in a few large pieces. The egg whites were firm and not water. The yolk was still soft, but all signs of runny yolk were gone.

These are still too soft for deviled eggs, so I prefer to chop them up and add them to lettuce and make a low-carb cobb salad.

What Is The Timer Button For

Some models have a button that reads Timer. While you may think that this is the button that sets the cooking time for your Instant Pot, it actually delays cooking time and will start the cooking when the timer counts down. You can set the cooking time with the plus/minus buttons or the dial, depending on the model.

How Do You Freeze Fresh Corn On The Cob

First, youll need to husk corn and remove silk. Then blanch the ears of corn. Blanch your corn 3-5 cobs at a time, depending on the size of the corn and the size of your pot. Place the cobs in boiling water for 5-6 minutes, depending on the size of the cob. Larger cobs will be blanched for a longer time. Start counting your time as soon as the cobs enter the water. Imminently place into ice bath. Wait until completely cooled. If you are freezing it off the cob, cut the kernels from the cob. If you are freezing whole, allow to drain and bag them in 1 gallon bags This will keep them from sticking together. If you are taking the corn off the cob, lay the cut corn out on a cookie sheet and flash freeze, then put into bags either 1 or 2 cups at a time and lay flat to freeze.

How To Stop Starch From Shooting Out

As we mentioned above, our primary goal with this method fo cooking pasta in the Instant Pot is to prevent starch from escaping during the release, and spraying starchy liquid all over your kitchen. In fact, it was one of the first times I cooked gluten-free pasta in the Instant Pot when I did not know how to react when the starch started spewing everywhere in my kitchen. Everything in the vicinity of my IP was covered in a starchy slime, and I feared that my Instant Pot was ruined since so much had come out from the release valve. Luckily, a few cycles through the dishwasher and taking apart the valve to clean it saved it.

But how to prevent the starch from escaping in the future? The first step was coming up with this method for cooking it which reduces the amount of starch that escapes to begin with. It truly makes a difference. But the next step was stopping the starch from coming out, without overcooking the pasta, if it does occur.

If a lot of starch starts to spew out of the pressure release valve, using a towel, carefully shut the valve, and let it stay closed for 20 seconds. After 20 seconds have passed, you can release the valve again. You can repeat this process as necessary until all the pressure has released. This helps control the temperature and rapid boiling with the Instant Pot, which reduces the starch from escaping.

What Program Should I Use To Boil Water In An Instant Pot

Use the sauté function on an Instant Pot when boiling 1-2 cups of water, leaving the lid off. When boiling more than 2 cups of water, use the high-pressure setting for 5 minutes with the lid tightly sealed.

Instant Pots, especially the fancier more expensive ones, come with a ton of different program options. Those can include, depending on your model:

  • PRESSURE COOK/MANUAL This is the most commonly used setting on all Instant Pots for traditional pressure cooking. Older models allow you to adjust the pressure level and then just use the +/- keys to change the cooking time.
  • SAUTÉ This mode allows you to brown food in oil just as you would in a skillet. It heats up the insert quickly, so make sure to add oil and stir frequently. This mode always is used with the lid off.The maximum sauté time is 30-minute intervals just as a safety precaution
  • KEEP WARM A low heat setting to hold food in the temperature safety zone once its been cooked using one of the other programs. Most Instant Pot cooking programs will automatically switch to keep warm once they have cooked for their set amount of time.

Other functions that are less used include:

  • SOUP/BROTH

How The Instant Pot Timer Works

Like with most timers on kitchen appliances, the timer on an Instant Pot basically counts down from a certain time.

When the timer reaches the end of the countdown, it shuts off. Alternatively, if you have the keep warm setting on, it simply lowers the heat and pressure to the right setting to keep your food warm.

But as youll learn in this article, Instant Pot timers are slightly different than those on other appliances.

    Natural Vs Manual Pressure Release

When the cook time is up on your Instant Pot, there’s still one more step — releasing the pressure.

There are two ways the pressure can be released. With natural pressure release, the valve on the lid stays in Sealing position and the pressure dissipates naturally over time. This can take anywhere from 20 minutes to more than an hour, depending on what you were cooking. Low-liquid meals take much less time than high-liquid meals, like soup or chili.

The other option is manual pressure release . Here, you’ll carefully move the valve into Venting position and watch as steam shoots out of it, releasing the pressure. This method is much faster, but very high-liquid meals, like soup, can still take about 15 minutes to release pressure manually.

So which one should you use? Consider that with natural pressure release, the Instant Pot is still full of pressure, so the food will continue cooking while the Instant Pot is in Sealing mode. Manual pressure release is useful — and necessary — when you’ve built in enough cooking time and cooking needs to be stopped as fast as possible.

If the goal is to cook a meal quickly, set enough time on the Instant Pot to cook your food and release the pressure manually when the time is up.

Why Do Most Recipes Use Manual Settings Instead Of Smart Program Buttons

One size does not fit all in most scenarios. This is true of the smart one-touch buttons on the Instant Pot too. While some may come in handy down the line, you should learn more about specific recipes before you begin relying on them. Using Manual/Pressure Cook button and adjusting time and pressure level by yourself gives you more control. Having said that, you can also adjust time and pressure level once youve selected once of the Smart Program function.

How To Boil Water In An Instant Pot Without A Lid

Some home cooks are cautious while closing the instant pots lid because of the intense amount of pressure it generates. Leaving the lid open not only reduces the risks of potential damages but also allows you to monitor raw ingredients condition.

But the question is, can you keep an instant pots lid open while boiling water? Wont the water evaporate this way? And how long will it take to boil water with the lid open?

New instant pot users and home cooks have all of these questions before they try using an appliance if you do too, youre not alone.

Heres how you can boil water in an instant pot without a lid:

    • Add the required amount of water into your instant pot and plug it in.
    • Select saute mode from its LED menu and let the water boil.
    • If you have added 2-3 cups of water, it will boil in under 5 minutes.
    • But if youre boiling more than 5 cups of water on saute mode, it can take 10 or more minutes.

Boiling water in an instant pot without the lid allows you to monitor its condition and timely switch it off without losing its temperature.

When you choose the high-pressure function with water, you have to open the pressure valve to release extra steam. The water inside can get a bit cold during that phase you wont like that for your coffee/tea.
