What To Know: Reheating Soup

  • With excellent steady temperatures, reheating soup in the instant pot is a breeze. What makes it even easier is if you made your original soup in the instant pot the day before. But not to worry if you didnt!
  • If you have a small amount of liquid, dont leave your instant pot alone simmering. Remember, liquid is key with cooking or reheating with the instant pot. So, if you have less than a quart of liquid, it should not be left alone to slow cook. The chances of it burning are high.

Can I Freeze This Soup

How to Reheat Soup in the Instant Pot

Yes! In fact, I like to keep mason jars filled with this chicken soup in the freezer. That way its easy to defrost some of this chicken soup when needed.

I prefer to freeze soup in wide mouth 16-oz mason jars. Just ladle the cooled soup into each jar, leaving about 1.5 inches of room for expansion in the freezer. Seal with BPA free, freezer safe plastic lids. The soup will keep for 5-6 months frozen.

When you are ready to defrost some soup, simply run the glass parts of the jar under warm water for a few minutes to loosen up the soup. Then invert the jar over a saucepan to remove the soup. Heat over medium-low heat on the stove top, covered, until the soup has defrosted and is warmed through. This usually takes about 15-20 minutes depending on how much soup you are warming up.

How To Substitute Ham Hock

In light of how challenging it is to track down ham hocks, fortunately, there are substitutes.

What is the ham hock adding to the soup?;

  • Smoky flavors
  • Umami
  • Protein

For pork eaters:;The closest substitute for ham hock is smoked bacon or smoked pork sausages. These substitutes deliver the same smoky flavors, umami-packed meaty taste, fat, and salt.

For non-pork meat eaters:;You can use smoked chicken or turkey bacon to deliver a similar smoky flavor that provides plenty of fat and salt.

For vegetarians:;A vegetarian version of split pea soup will taste the most different from the original flavor of split pea soup made with ham hock. That doesnt mean your vegetarian version is inferiorjust different.

To deliver an equally tasty vegetarian soup, youll want to add;extra oil or fat and salt. Olive oil and butter are fine substitutes. You can add soy sauce or similarly umami-packed ingredients . And you can add smokiness with smoked paprika and/or smoke-dried chipotles.

In a vegetarian version, youll also benefit from using the most flavorful vegetable stock you can find to add layers of flavors to your soup.

How To Make A Thick Or Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup

If you want a creamy chicken noodle soup, add 1/2 cup half-and-half or heavy cream. Stir to combine, and add more as desired.

For a thick chicken soup that sticks to your spoon, make a cornstarch slurry using 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water. Select Saute and add to the cooking pot and stir until soup thickens, about 1 minute.;

Keep in mind that it will continue to thicken as it cools; however, if you want it thicker, add more cornstarch slurry until it reaches desired consistency.

When my kids are sick, I dont thicken it. But if Im serving it for dinner in a bread bowl, I prefer it thickened with cornstarch.

The Size Of The Instant Pot Is Important

Keep in mind, reheating 1 portion of cold soup will not take as long as it will take to reheat a full turkey or chicken dinner. When you hear your friends and family talking about how they can reheat their food in an instant pot in 10 minutes or less, you should know that they are probably not having the same meal as yourself.

A few examples of heating foods in an instant pot:

  • A small portion of soup and sauce takes 1 minute
  • A dish of frozen pasta cooked in an instant pot will take 6 minutes
  • A dish of frozen pasta cooked in a pot inside the instant pot can take 26 minutes
  • A whole chicken frozen with veggies can take up to 30 minutes
  • A frozen vegetable curry dish cooked in the instant pot will take 2 minutes
  • A frozen vegetable curry dish cooked in a pot inside the instant pot can take 20 minutes

The size of the serving is what matters the most.

If you have food frozen in a silver foil container, simply placing it in the steamer shelf of the instant pot will allow the food to heat in no time despite the fact that you just took it out of the freezer. On the other hand, if you have a large dish of pasta frozen in a deep glass dish, it can take it at least 26 minutes to heat.

    Instant Pot Butternut Squash Soup

    How Do You Reheat Foods In The Instant Pot? | #AskWardee 047

    It’s the perfect make-ahead lunch!

    If youre an;Instant Pot;pro, you know that its especially amazing for;homemade soups. This velvety, rich;butternut squash recipe takes just 10 minutes to prep and is just as perfect for a fancy dinner party as it is for a make-ahead work lunch. Bonus: It just so happens to be vegetarian and vegan.

    What is the easiest way to peel butternut squash?

    Our favorite trick: Pierce the squash several times with a fork, cut off both ends, then microwave it for 3 minutes. Let it cool until it doesnt burn your hand, then peel away. Itll be much easier. If you want to save even more time, use 6 cups of store-bought pre-peeled and chopped butternut squash.

    What flavors go well with butternut squash?

    The winter gourd’s;subtle sweetness pairs well with warm spices. Here, we use curry powder, but you could also sub in 1 tablespoon Thai red curry paste. If youre not a fan of curry, simply omit the addition of either.;

    Though butternut squash;is already pretty creamy in texture on its own, coconut milk adds extra body as well as a slightly fruity undertone. The fat in coconut milk;tends to separate from the milk, so this recipe calls for blending it first. Alternatively, you can shake the can of coconut milk before opening, which;is a good move if you plan to use your immersion blender to puree the soup right in the pot! If you already have some heavy cream in the fridge, feel free to swap it in.

    Why Cook The Noodles Separate

    I prefer to cook the noodles separately because they get mushy when they sit in the broth too long or when you reheat them.;

    Generally, I dont add them to the soup before I serve it. I let each person fill their bowl with as many noodles as they like, then ladle the broth and vegetables over the top to suit their taste.

    Plus, the soup reheats much better if the noodles are frozen separately. Noodles require less time to reheat, and heating them separately keeps the noodles from absorbing all the broth.

    How To Reheat Food With Instant Pot: Steaming

    For dishes that have a considerable amount of water content, you can reheat it by using the Steam function. Simply place the food that you want to re-heat into the inner pot , close lid, turn the venting knob to sealing and press the Steam button.

    As far as how long you want to steam it for, this depends on what type of food youre reheating. For example, youll want to steam frozen foods for a bit longer compared to something like a leftover stew. Once the steaming is complete and the cooker has beeped, release the pressure. If the food is still not fully re-heated, simply add additional time.

    Tip: Remember, steaming works the best when there is liquid present in the dish.
