Is Red Rice Healthier Than Brown Rice

They are both healthy and good for you. Brown rice is usually less expensive than red rice, so that can be a plus.

Red rice has almost 10 times more antioxidants than brown rice. But brown rice is also a good source of iron and zinc.

Id say they are both great to incorporate in your meals as much as possible.

How Much Rice Can You Cook At A Time

It is important to remember that rice will expand as it cooks. On average, 1 cup of rice generally yields 3 cups of cooked rice. Therefore, you should not fill instant pots more than full. This means you can cook 2.5 cups in a 3-quart Instant Pot, 4 cups in a 6-quart Instant Pot, and 6 cups in an 8-quart Instant Pot.

I usually cook 5 cups of rice in my 8-quart Instant Pot, and it turns out perfectly cooked every single time.

Instant Pot White Rice Recipe

The best Instant Pot White Rice is made with a simple recipe that results in the most fluffy and tender texture. With the right rice to water ratio, a simple trick so it doesnt clump, and knowing how long to cook it, youll make perfect rice every time!

Growing up we always made our white rice in the rice cooker. It was quick, easy, and was pretty much foolproof.

If youd asked me up until about a year ago Id say the rice cooker was the only way.

That is, until the magical powers of the Instant Pot were discovered.

Not only do the long grains of white rice cook up until perfectly tender and ultra fluffy, but its also ready in a fraction of the time.

Im talking like HALF of the time it takes for a rice cooker or a stovetop method.

Instant Pot white rice is ready in only 20 minutes while cooking it in a rice cooker takes closer to 40 minutes!

And the process is so simple to follow, you might even end up tossing that ole rice cooker away!

How Many Cups Of Rice Can You Cook In An Instant Pot

Amazon Prime Deal 8 Quart Instant Pot Duo

In theory: 2.5 cups in a 3-quart Instant Pot. 5 cups in a 6 quart Instant Pot. 6.5 cups in an 8-quart Instant Pot.

This is US standard measuring cups and raw dry rice.

So the mathematical thought for the theory is the following:

  • 1 cup of raw white rice gives on average 3 cups cooked rice.
  • Instant Pots should not be filled more than 2/3 of its full capacity at any time. So we have to take the expanded rice into consideration.
  • A 6-quart Instant Pots capacity is 24 cups and two-thirds of that are 16 cups.
  • There should not be more than 16 cups cooked rice in the Instant Pot and since 1 cup raw makes 3 cups cooked we have to divide the 16 by 3. That makes 5.3 cups.

The calculation is only theory though. I have not tried that many cups in my own 6-quart. 4 cups raw dry rice are the maximum I have cooked myself without any issues and with perfect results.

How Long Will My Instant Pot Take To Come To Pressure

While it may take longer for the 8 quart to come to pressure than the 3 quart and the 6 quart, once it comes up to pressure your cooking times should be the same. You might not notice any significant Instant Pot cooking differences when it comes to cooking times though. They should be relatively spot on no matter which pot you are using.

It takes an average of 5-10 minutes for my 6 quart Instant Pot to come to pressure, depending on how much food is in it and if that food is frozen. An Instant Pot with frozen food takes longer to come to pressure than one with refrigerated food.

Note: Technically the cook times should be the same. If you want to see how crazy different cook times can be, head over to the Instant Pot Facebook group and ask how long it takes to make hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot. Youll quickly see what I mean by every pot and every size being different.

You can safely assume that unless noted otherwise, every Instant Pot recipe online is made for a 6 quart size. If youre using a 3 quart size or mini Instant Pot, divide the recipe in half and the cook time stays the same. If youre using an 8 quart Instant Pot, you can easily double the recipe youre cooking and the cook time stays the same.

How To Cook White Rice In Instant Pot

The basic steps for cooking white rice in the Instant Pot are simple to follow:

  • Rinse white rice under cold running water for 1-2 minutes, or until the water runs clear.

This removes the starchy coating that forms a glue-like substance making the grains stick together.

  • Add the rice, water, butter or oil, and salt to a 6-quart Instant Pot.

The water can also be substituted for chicken or vegetable broth with no variation of the grain to liquid ratio.

  • Cook white rice at high pressure for 3-4 minutes and allow a 10-minute natural pressure release.

Use the shorter amount of time if you like it more al dente, and longer if you prefer it tender. You can also cook the rice at low pressure, for 12-13 minutes with a quick pressure release.

  • Types Of Rice Cookers

Rice cookers come in 2 main types including electric rice cookers and gas rice cookers. In todays article, I will focus on electric rice cookers since theyre also divided into different types.

You can pick from regular rice cookers, advanced rice cookers, multifunction rice cookers, and induction heat rice cookers. As you probably suppose, regular rice cookers are the simplest on the list.

Theyre cheap and easy to utilize. Advanced rice cookers, on the other hand, resemble regular models in most aspects. However, they also feature additional settings that make them super-efficient.

If youre looking for a modern and super-advanced rice cooker, look no further than a multifunction one. This type of rice cooker has more options. However, they also cost more money. With a multifunctional rice cooker, you can create a broad selection of rice-based dishes with little to no supervision.

Last but not least, induction rice cookers are the most advanced tools among the above. They feature an ingenious heating mechanism that creates a more consistent and high heat to cook perfectly.

These units arent suitable for cooking rice only. Theyre perfect for a lot of other cooking processes. But theyre the most expensive on the list. Whats the right type of rice cooker for you?

    Instant Pot Chicken & Rice

If there’s one thing we find magical about Instant Pots, it’s how quickly and perfectly they cook chicken and rice. The rice is the perfect texture and the chicken is insanely tender. This is the meal we cook in the Instant Pot the most often.

IMPORTANT! This recipe works best in a 6-quart instant pot. If using newer versions of Instant Pot, especially 8-quart capacity models, we recommend removing the inner pot after sautéing and letting it cool off for 5 to 10 minutes before moving on to the pressure cooking stage. This will help prevent a potential burn warning.

    boneless skinless chicken breasts

    Freshly chopped parsley, for garnish

  • Preheat Instant Pot by setting to Sauté. Add oil and cook onion until softened, 3 to 4 minutes. Add garlic, oregano, and paprika and cook until fragrant, 1 minute.
  • Stir in rice and broth and season with salt and pepper. Add carrots, bell pepper, and chicken, and season generously again with salt and pepper.
  • Close lid, change setting to manual or “Pressure Cook” and set for 8 minutes on High. When 8 minutes is up, let pot decompress naturally for 10 minutes, then release pressure, remove lid, and shred chicken. Top with parsley before serving.
  • Natural Pressure Release Vs Quick Pressure Release

Whats better? Hands down, no doubt > > natural pressure release. If you cook rice longer so you can do quick pressure release, with the hope to have the rice cooked faster overall, it gets sticky and mushy.

If you want fluffy rice, I encourage you to be patient and wait for natural pressure release. I timed all rice and there doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to the timing. Even the same kind of rice in the same amount has had different natural pressure release times.

    How To Freeze Cooked Rice

    Duo 8 Qt

While we have an entire post dedicated to answering the question, Can you freeze rice? we also want to give you the short and sweet answer. Yes! You can freeze cooked rice. I do it all the time.

    Freezing Instructions

Whether it be cooked white rice, brown rice, Mexican rice, Spanish rice, all can be frozen in the same way:

    • Cool the cooked rice. The key to maintaining a good texture with frozen rice is to make sure the rice is completely cool before freezing. We recommend spreading cooked rice on a large cookie sheet to help it cool quickly and evenly.
    • Divide into portions. Once the rice is cool, scoop portions into quart or gallon-size freezer bags. Be sure to squeeze all of the air out when sealing.
    • Label and freeze. Label your freezer bag with the type of rice, amount, and date. Stack your bags of rice on a flat surface in your freezer. And thats it!

Today I thought Id share with you my method for how to cook perfect rice in the Instant Pot.

    Why You Need This Recipe

    • All types of white and brown rice are low in fat and cholesterol. Rice is a traditional food that is high in carbohydrates, with varying levels of starch.
    • While Basmati rice is often associated with Indian cuisine, it can also be served with Asian dishes, curries, tofu, or vegetables. I almost always make rice to go with my Air Fryer Crispy Tofu, Sweet Potato Coconut Chicken Curry, Instant Pot Chicken Curry, or Chickpea and Lentil Curry.
    • You can even make dessert out of rice! See my recipe for Instant Pot Rice Pudding.
    • While its traditional to cook rice on the stovetop or in a rice cooker, the absolute easiest method is to use an electric pressure cooker! You literally just add all of the ingredients to the pot, let it do its thing, and then remove the lid. This process takes just 21 minutes from start to finish . Its like magic.

Cooking Rice Using The Pip Method

Red beans and rice is traditionally served over white rice. Guess what were gonna cook the rice in the Instant Pot with the red beans and sausage, using something called the pot-in-pot, or PIP method. Were placing another bowl inside the Instant Pot to allow the rice to cook simultaneously, but separately.

This is where the 3-inch trivet comes in. Its high enough to keep the second bowl out of the food cooking below. But first, well need to create something that will allow us to easily and safely lift the trivet out of the pot once its done cooking. I do this by folding a length of aluminum foil into a 4.5-inch strip. Fold the aluminum foil strip under the trivet, leaving the sides sticking up. Place the trivet into the pot, over the red beans mixture. Set the oven safe bowl on top of the trivet.

Add your rice to the oven-safe bowl. Instant Pot recommends a water/rice ratio of 1:1. However, I find that when cooking rice using PIP, you actually need a little less. I use ¾ cup of water per one cup of rice. Season the rice with some salt to your taste.

Another benefit of PIP method is that the food cooking on top can withstand a longer cooking time because its not in direct contact with the heat. Dont worry even though were cooking the rice longer than the recommended time, it will still come out nice and fluffy.

How Do I Cook 1 Cup Of Rice In Instant Pot

    Instant Pot Jasmine White Rice

I typically make 1-2 cups of white rice in the Instant Pot. The ratio that I find best is 1:1.25 rice to water. There are many recipes out there that recommend 1:1 ratio of rice to water. I personally think it needs that extra moisture.

Multiply this ratio to make more than 1 cup of white long grain rice in your Instant Pot.

Can I Use Any Type Of Rice With This Recipe

No. This recipe is intended for long-grain white rice. Although the rice to water ratio is the same for both brown and white rice when using your Instant Pot, the cooking times are very different. Use any of the following long-grain white rice varieties:

    • Basmati rice

    Making Smaller Individual Portions

If you want to cook an individual serving of ½ cup dried rice, use the pot-in-pot method. This is where you mix the rice with equal parts water, then steam it in a smaller pot that sits on top of a trivet with 1 cup of water in the larger insert. Pressure cook for 5 minutes instead of 3 minutes, and naturally-release for 10 minutes.
