You’re Slow Cooking On Low

The miraculous Instant Pot also moonlights as a slow cooker, but you won’t get very far if you’re using the “low” setting for your beef stew. Because “low” is more comparable to the “keep warm” function on your slow cooker, you can imagine that your meat will still be about as raw as when it went in, even after hours of cook time. Use the “normal” setting for a true slow cooker “low,” and the “more” setting for “high.” Or scrap the raw beef stew and opt for plan B: steak tartare.

Can I Use Instant Pot Without Lid

How to Cook Ground Beef in the Instant Pot – Perfect for Beginners!

Many Instant Pot users almost always use manual settings. While Smart Program buttons are handy, cooking instructions can vary for different types of rice, smaller or larger beans, and soup with or without meat. With manual settings, you have more control over the time and pressure level. Here is how to use the Instant Pot with manual pressure cooker settings.

Step 1. Star the Instant Pot as mentioned above.

Step 2. Add food, seasoning and liquid to the pot. The liquid can be cold or hot hotter liquids take less time to heat up so the Instant Pot comes to pressure quicker. Stir if needed.

Note on stirring: If adding tomato sauce or paste, keep them on the top and dont stir too much as these foods can sometimes thicken and burn during cooking again, this depends if water and stock are also added as when diluted, its less of a problem.

Step 3. Get your lid and quickly check that the sealing ring on the inside is in place. If its loose or sticks out, the pot might not seal properly and it will not be able to come to pressure. Place it on top and twist it until it locks in place.

Step 4. On older models like Duo Classic, check that the steam release handle on top of the lid is pointing to Sealing. On the more advanced models of the Instant Pot, the vent will automatically seal when the cooking process begins. On the Duo Nova the quick release button should be popped up and not pressed down.

Tips For Making The Best Beef Stew

  • What type of meat do I use for instant pot beef stew? We prefer using beef chuck since I find it produces the most tender beef but if you are in a pinch, you can use beef stew meat
  • What is the best pressure cooker for making beef stew? Be sure to use at least a 6 quart Instant Pot pressure cooker for this recipe.
  • Can I skip browning the meat before? While you can skip this step, I would definitely brown the beef in the Instant Pot prior to adding the other ingredients. Its an extra, more involved step but completely worth it for that caramelized and hearty depth and extra layer of flavor you get. On those days you are pressed for time, you are totally free to skip the browning if youd prefer an easy dump and go recipe.
  • What vegetables do you use in beef stew? Be sure to use a combination of aromatics like onions and garlic plus vegetables. I used carrots, celery potatoes and a sweet potato. Feel free to leave that out if youre not a sweet potato fan and you can also add some green peas or cauliflower if you like.
  • What other key ingredients do I need to make the best beef stew? Add some tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar and a star anise for a punch of flavor. If you cant find a star anise or are not a fan, feel free to leave it out.
  • Instant Pot Frozen Meat

How to Brown Meat in Instant Pot Without Sticking
  • Youll need to add a bit more pressure cooking time.
  • Remember to allow pot to do a natural pressure release when done, at least for 15 minutes natural if not the entire time.
  • Make sure your pieces are broken apart. For example if you have a bunch of frozen chicken legs, dont put them in with 4 stuck together. Break them apart so they cook evenly.
  • Then lets move on to an Instant Pot frozen whole chicken! Of course youll want to choose one that doesnt have a bag of inners inside the cavity, but my organic brand doesnt.

Speaking of chicken, we have a lot of Instant Pot chicken recipes here on The Typical Mom blog! It is probably my girls favorite protein to eat.

Using a simple lemon pepper marinade you too can give your pieces tons of flavor this way. Instead of using water, you can use other combinations such as this one. Liquid is a necessity for steaming in a pressure cooker.

That brings us to frozen chicken thighs in Instant Pot and how that is done perfectly. I love this cut because theyre so tender, flavorful, and the cheapest pieces overall.

What is your favorite appetizer or snack? I bet its a batch full wings! We have made them in so many different ways because theyre just mouth watering I tell you.

    Option : Saute The Meat

Using the saute function on the Instant Pot, is nearly the same as browning the meat on the stove.

    • Hit the saute function on the Instant Pot and then hit Adjust to change the heat to normal heat.
    • Let the Instant Pot heat for 2-3 minutes. Some models display Hot once heated, some do not, but after a few minutes of time, you can begin to saute the meat.
    • Add in a couple of teaspoons of oil and let the oil heat for 1 minute.
    • Add the ground meat, and allow to cook, breaking the meat up into small pieces as it browns.
    • Once the ground beef is cooked thoroughly, this takes about 6-7 minutes, turn the Instant Pot OFF.
    • Drain off any excess grease and then use as desired. This works great for recipes like Instant Pot Beef Stroganoff, Instant Pot Chili, or Instant Pot Hamburger Helper.

A note to this method–it seems silly to get out your pressure cooker if you are just sauteing your meat , but if you are using it to start another recipe you will finish in your Instant Pot, it is a great method to use!)

    Why Does Browning Cause Stickiness

Meat sticking during the browning process is not limited to Instant Pots. Skillets, pans, etc. all present the same challenges if certain techniques arent used.

For all scientific questions regarding food I go to Harold McGee who is author of the two books On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen and Keys to Good Cooking: A Guide to Making the Best of Foods and Recipes. Im a self-taught cook, so I study and reference these books frequently to master different cooking techniques.

In the latter book, McGee explains that high heat causes proteins to form bonds with the surface of the pan its being cooked on. The more protein-rich the food, the greater the stickiness factor. This factor is multiplied for more delicate proteins like eggs and fish. Think about scrambling eggs as a reference.

The simple obvious solution is to create a buffer between the pan and the protein, which is why oils and butter become so important. But if it were all that simple Fat/oils dont always do the trick alone, technique matters too!

    • We have used both fresh onion and dried minced onion in this recipe before with success. Desired amounts are a matter of taste .

Do You Cover Meat With Liquid In Pressure Cooker

Instant Pot| How to Make a Brown Turkey Stock

When you use a pressure cooker, you need to have enough liquid in the pot for it to come up to pressure and cook the food properly. The rule of liquids in pressure cooking is to always add at least 1 cup of liquid unless the recipe states otherwise. The liquid will help create enough steam to cook the meal.
