Tips For Cooking Beef Stew In The Crockpot:

  • Choose the right cut of meat. For beef that usually means a tougher cut of meat. My mom used chuck roast or any meat labeled stew meat on it. She would often get the stew meat because it was already cut up in the perfect size for stew. Also make sure to trim the fat beforehand. This will ensure the soup isnt too greasy.
  • Keep the temperature of the stew in the safe zone. It is best to use thawed items in the stew. So meats and veggies should be thawed prior to putting them into the crockpot because it might take too long for the stew to heat up otherwise.
  • Buy a crockpot with a lid holder like this one for ease of use. Lying a hot lid on the counter may cause the lid to shatter from the temperature change.
  • Take your stew to the next level by browning the meat beforehand. Just get a skillet hot with a little oil and brown the meat on at least 2 sides. This gives the stew an added dimension.
  • Adding wine? Add a little less than you normally would because there is no evaporation when cooking in the crockpot.
  • Leave some room in the crockpot at the top. The juices from the meat and veggies will increase the volume a little more than when you first put everything in so try not to overfill it. 1/2 to 2/3 full is optimal.
  • Does the recipe call for dairy? Put dairy in last and only for the last 15 minutes or so. Dairy can easily cook too long in the crockpot.
  • Adjust for high altitude. High altitudes may need at least 30 minutes of extra cooking time per 1 hour of cooking.
  • Tips For Cooking Beef Stew In An Instant Pot:

  • Brown your meat right inside the instant pot! Just set the Instant pot first to the saute setting and add just a little oil to the bottom and once it is heated add the meat to brown. You can also add the onions to while you saute to give them a little more flavor.
  • Brown the meat with a thickener like flour. Just sprinkle a little flour on top of the meat before browning. This will make the stew thicker and it will seem like you cooked it all day.
  • Cut veggies and meat consistently. Foods cooked in the instant pot can be cooked unevenly if they are not cut around the same size.
  • Dont add as much wine if you are using a recipe that has wine in it. Very little gets evaporated and will taste too strong if you use the full amount as the stovetop recipe.
  • Trim your meat of as much fat as you can. This is why a leaner cut of beef is best!
  • Remember to always put in the inner pot of the instant pot before cooking. Its easier than you think to forget to put it in so this is your friendly reminder!
  • Keep the setting to warm. This way you can enjoy the stew hot for the second helping

Will An Instant Pot Replace A Crockpot

The Instant Pot has the bonus of other cooking features as well. If you would rather use the pressure cook function to decrease cook time, most Crockpot recipes can be converted to an Instant Pot recipe that uses the pressure cook function, says Keith.

How We Chose Models To Compare

With so many models to choose from, its important to narrow the must-haves in a Crockpot or Instant Pot. We chose the best of each brand using the following criteria:

    • Size: Our choices hold 6 quarts each, a minimum we recommend for any slow cooker unless you typically cook for one person. With a 6-quart cooker, you fit enough food to feed two with leftovers or four to six people without leftovers, depending on the dish you choose.
    • Features: The Crockpot we chose has multiple programmable features for slow cooking. However, it differs from the Instant Pot in that it doesnt offer the additional features of a multicooker. Despite this, the Crockpot is versatile and allows you to cook a wide variety of foods, similar to the Instant Pot.
    • Price: Our choices for Instant Pot and Crockpot models are both under $150.

Finding The Right Cook Time For Corn On The Cob

Top 10 Crock Pot Power Cord Audio & Video Power Cables LeisureTimery

While corn on the cob is often listed in pressure cooking time tables, Ive found that their timing doesnt always yield the best results. Maybe I like my veggies a little crisper than others, or maybe its my altitude, Im not sure.

For making PERFECT corn on the cob in the Instant Pot, I like to use a 2 minute cook time and a quick pressure release.

The perfect cook time for you will depend on a number of factors:

    • how soft you like your corn
    • whether your ears of corn are freshly picked
    • the number of cobs you have in the cooking pot
    • the material of your steamer basket

If youre unsure, I always recommend starting with a shorter time because you can always add another minute or two. You will find your pressure cooker comes back to pressure really quickly after youve released the pressure. So it wont add much time if you need an extra minute or two.

Best Toppings And Seasonings For Corn On The Cob

Looking for toppings for corn on the cob? Honestly, I prefer my corn on the cob served the classic wayjust slathered in butter with a bit of salt and pepper. Steaming the corn in the pressure cooker really lets the sweet corn flavor to come through and makes it a perfect side for barbecue baby back ribs, beef brisket, or burgers.

However, mixing up your corn on the cob has become super popular lately. Between food trucks and state fairs, there are some amazing flavor combinations out there!

In my state, at the Utah State Fair, we have a truck that serves fresh corn on the cob with lemon butter and Parmesan cheese.

The Arkansas State Fairs serves bacon-wrapped corn on the cob. Id make it easy to eat and serve by sauteing diced bacon in your pressure cooking pot. Once the bacon is crisp, remove it from the cooking pot and set aside. Wipe out the pot and then start the corn on the cob recipe. But if you really want to wrap your corn, Id try steaming it for 1 minute in the pressure cooker, then wrapping it in bacon and finishing it on the grill like in my BBQ Bacon Cheese Hot Dog recipe.

At the Minnesota State Fair, you can order Cheesy Nacho Corn on the Cob, coated with crushed Doritos and drizzled with nacho cheese.

Many state fairs from New York to Texas also offer Mexican Street Fair corn, aka Elote, made with crema mexicana, queso fresco, cilantro, and lime.

    Sample Instant Pot Recipe

Instant Pots can also make tender, flavorful recipes often in less time.

Heres a pressure cooker recipe for butter chicken :

  • Stir in a 14.5-ounce can of diced tomatoes, an 8-ounce can of tomato sauce, and 1/2 cup chicken stock.
  • Cut 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts into 1-inch pieces and add to your Instant Pot.

Why Is An Instant Pot Better Than A Crockpot

The Instant Pot isnt necessarily better than the Crockpot. Both have differences in functionality and cook features. The best choice for you depends on your preferences and the type of cooking functionality you prefer.

The Instant Pot will offer more versatility as an all-in-one appliance, while the Crockpot is best for perfecting slow-cooked recipes.

If you plan to use only the slow cooker feature of either appliance, then its likely best to opt for the Crockpot over the Instant Pot. Alternatively, if you prefer the flexibility of cooking in an Instant Pot, then a multicooker is the best choice.

How To Choose Fresh Corn For Corn On The Cob

Crock-Pot Express Crock Multi-Cooker Review and Demo

My favorite corn comes from a little family farm that grows it fresh and picks it daily. I try to buy from them whenever I can. Here are a few tips I got from a generous produce employee:

I had always been taught to peel the husk back and look at the tip of corn itself. However, Ive learned that unless youre planning to eat the corn that night, peeking at the cob in the store means your corn wont last as long.

So if youre not looking at it in-store, heres how to tell:

    • The color of the husk should be bright green and tightly wrapped
    • The silky stuff at the top of the husk should be brown and just a little sticky
    • The husk shouldnt have any brown holes in it, especially towards the top
    • The corn should feel solid underneath the husk, and you should be able to feel the individual kernels. You dont want any areas missing kernels
