No More Dried Out Ham: Instant Pot Honey Baked Ham

After you make ham in a pressure cooker, you wont want to cook a ham in any other way. Forget using an oven, the Instant Pot makes for the juiciest and most flavorful ham youll ever have.

I used my 6-quart Instant Pot to cook a bone-in spiral cut ham and it is the best ham Ive ever had. Really.

This ham is better than those honey-baked hams I used to spend a fortune on back in the day. Back then, I never cared much for the ham itself but rather always looked forward to using the ham bone. This ham recipe has changed that for me. Now, I love the ham just as much as the bone! And if you know me, that is saying a lot.

How Do You Heat A Fully Cooked Ham In A Pressure Cooker

  • Start by making small slits across your entire ham, about 1 inch apart. They should not be deep less than 1/4 inch. Next, turn your knife and make slits at a diagonal across the original slits. This is called scoring and allows the juices to penetrate the meat.
  • Cover your ham with pineapple and whole cloves. Use toothpicks to attach the pineapple.
  • Create a foil boat for your ham using two layers of foil. ;Make sure the foil is large enough to fold over the top of the ham.
  • Lower your ham into the instant pot on top of a trivet.;
  • Mix together pineapple juice, brown sugar, and maple syrup. Pour it over the ham.
  • Fold the foil over the ham and squish the pieces together so the foil completely covers the ham.
  • Cook on high pressure until warmed .
  • Natural pressure release.
  • Remove the ham from the instant pot. Pour out the water from the bottom of the pot.
  • Carefully open the top of the foil and pour the juices from the ham into the instant pot.;
  • Mix together a cornstarch slurry and whisk it into the juices.
  • Bring the glaze to a boil using the sauté button.
  • Let boil until thickened, about 5 minutes.
  • Pour glaze over ham and serve.
  • Make sure to remove the cloves and pineapple prior to cutting the ham. The pineapple can be served alongside the ham.

Whats The Best Cut Of Ham

I like to get a half ham, labelled either shank portion or butt portion, with the bone in. They are usually quite large but do freeze very well.

So if you only want to cook half of it and freeze the other half thats an option. Or cook it and then freeze it for later.

The only kind of ham I wouldnt recommend for this recipe is a spiral cut ham. It would cook a little weird in the Instant Pot and go rather dry I think.

That being said, I havent tried it myself as I always find the spiral cut hams dry.

    What Is A Semi

    Easy 3

Normally a whole bone-in ham consists of a hip bone and a leg bone. In a semi-boneless ham, that hip joint has been removed, leaving only a smaller bit of leg bone. This just makes for easier carving. Shopping for a ham can be confusing because often farms and companies will call them different names. So, look for a ham that is not spiral sliced, will fit into your Instant Pot and has a bone in it.

Spiral cut. No matter if you want to use a boneless or bone-in ham, make sure that it is spiral-cut.

Spiral cut hams are sooooooo much easier to cook and serve up. TRUST me! You will want a spiral-cut ham!

Boneless vs. bone-in. There are pros and cons to each!

Boneless hams will take less time to cook in your Instant Pot.

Bone-In hams will take 3-4 more minutes to cook in the pressure cooker but will have the extra savory flavors that only come from cooking meat on the bone!

HOW MANY POUNDS OF MEAT WILL FIT IN MY PRESSURE COOKER

This is pretty important to know right? I have found that no bigger than a 7.5lb ham will fit in my 6 qt pressure cooker.;For an 8 qt pressure cooker I had a ham just over 10 lbs that just about didn’t fit. Also try to get one pretty uniform, if its extra wide it might not fit or fit very awkward.

    • 8qt pressure cooker up to 10lbs

Does Ham Taste Good In An Instant Pot

This might be the most important question of them all. Does the ham taste good? Sure we want to re-heat it fast but we want it to taste good as well, we got an audience to impress, right?

I can confirm that yes you can produce a flavorful ham in the Instant Pot. The best part of the ham was the flavorful liquid that was left with at the bottom. You can use it as a dipping sauce, or hit the saute button on your Instant Pot and let it reduce a bit to get a flavorful glaze you can brush on.

Place gammon joint in inner pot , add a peeled onion, 3-4 garlic cloves , 4-5 black peppercorns , one bay leaf, one carrot and any veggies you may have going off. Cover with water, always being mindful of the two thirds mark as you’re going to use the pressure cooking function . Lock in the lid. Steam release handle pointing to Sealing. Press the Manual button, adjust to the right time based on 11 minutes per 500 g, natural release. As above, increase the time for bigger joints but for this method I also do 2-3 x 700 g gammon joints for 18 minutes with natural release.

Yes, I still love my Instant Pot, I now have both the DUO 7 in 1 and the LUX 6 in 1. The Instant Pot is a modern day electric pressure cooker that also slow cooks, steams, cooks rice, the DUO 7 in 1 even makes yoghurt. My;favourite function of them all though is the automatic Keep Warm product that kicks in at the end of the pressure cooking and slow cookingcycles.

Potential liquid choices include pineapple juice, root beer, cola. Dr. Pepper, ginger ale, chicken stock, ham stock just to name some options. When I made mine I choose to use pineapple juice. You could also use a a can of sliced pineapple with the juice. I have made ham in the past with a root beer glaze.
