How to Use an Instant Pot – Instant Pot 101 – Beginner? Start HERE!

Electric pressure cookers come with an inner pot and an outer pot , as well as a lid that creates an airtight seal.

The airtight seal is what creates the pressure, which will eventually need to be released, and to do so safely, youll need to read the directions that come with your pot. But generally speaking, youll either use the quick-release method , or the natural-release method .

Test Kitchen tip: A cool, wet towel placed on the lid can help speed up the release process.

Instant Pot Slow Cooker Is Not Hot Enough

Reason For Insufficient Heating

Usually, the Instant Pot fails to heat up because the solder connection on the bottom side fails. The failed connection happens at the output terminal of the main relay . This switch sends the electric signals to the heating element. So, if the heating element doesnt receive electric signals, there will be no heating. To fix this issue, follow the below-mentioned steps

  • Flip over the Instant Pot and take off the plastic cover
  • If there is no power connection, look out for the neutral wall plug and red wire on the board
  • You will come across the white covered thermal cutoff at the bottom left which needs to be replaced
  • Now, disconnect all the wires and connection by pulling the plastic tabs
  • There, you can see the cracked solder joint, and thats where you need to fill in fresh solder
  • The Instant Pot will start heating again

Instant Pot & Slow Cooking

The slow cooker low settings arent equal to the low setting on Instant Pot. Thats because, with Instant Pot, the maximum temperature is 180-degrees to 190-degrees Fahrenheit. This is not enough heating for preparing your meal. Also, the Instant Pot creates pressure and steam to cook food, but the slow cookers start heating from the bottom.

The bottom line is that Instant Pot is an impeccable pressure cooker, but its not suitable for slow cooking. If you are inclined to slow cooking, Crock-Pot is the right choice. Well, using Instant Pot for slow cooking is like drinking soup with a fork!

Instant Pot Bean/chili Setting

How much different is an instant pot from a slow cooker ...

The Bean/Chili setting button can be used to cook larger dry legumes such as beans and chickpeas in liquid or to cook chili or another type of stew that uses dry beans. The program settings use High pressure and result in different doneness of beans. When cooking beans, always use NR to release pressure after cooking is done. Below is how to use the Bean/Chili setting on Instant Pot.

  • Turn the Instant Pot on, it will say OFF to indicate the Stand-By mode. Add dry beans, liquid and salt to the pot. Secure and lock the lid. Select the Bean/Chili button. The default setting is pre-programmed to set the pot to cook at High pressure for 30 minutes. If you press the button again, you can adjust the mode from Normal to Less or More .
  • Less mode 25 minutes at High pressure for a firmer bean texture or to cook black beans, dry lima beans, Navy beans, black-eyed peas, Adzuki, anasazi, dry peas.
  • Normal mode 30 minutes at High pressure for a softer bean texture or to cook red kidney beans, white kidney beans , Pinto beans, black-eyed peas .
  • More mode 40 minutes at High pressure for a very soft bean texture or to cook harder legumes like chickpeas and soybeans .

COOKING TIPS

Ensure dry beans are completely submerged in water. Dried beans double in volume and weight after soaking or cooking. To avoid overflow, please do not fill the inner pot more than to the ½ mark to allow for expansion.

Note: You can also use the Multigrain setting to cook most beans.

Release The Pressure Safely

When you release the pressure, the escaping steam will be very hothot enough to burn you. So make sure the hole on top of the steam release is facing away from you before pressing the release button. Also, the quick-release method is not suitable for soups or cereals , because quick release may cause food to splatter out with the steam.

What Is An Instant Pot

An Instant Pot is an electric pressure cooker. It is a multi-use appliance that can cook foods quickly at high pressure. Steam pressure builds up inside the pot, which creates a higher temperature environment that cooks foods faster. Unlike old fashioned pressure cookers, the Instant Pot has many safety features that make it safe and easy to use.

An Instant Pot is a pressure cooker, sauté pot, slow cooker, steamer, rice cooker, yogurt maker and warmer all in one. Ive been amazed at the versatility of my Instant Pot and the flavor and texture of the foods that I am able to cook in it. The high pressure inside the Instant Pot can tenderize even tough cuts of meat. It creates rich, complex flavors seriously, Ive never had better chili than Instant Pot chili!

Slow Cooking Is One Of The Best Ways To Use The Instant Pot

How to Get Started with your Instant Pot Duo! Beginners start here!

I know its not the most touted use for the Instant Pot, but it is one of the 6 or 7 things it can do and I find that it is one of the best slow cookers Ive ever used. Let me take a moment to wax poetic on why:

  • The inner pot is stainless steel rather than non-stick like many of the other slow cookers out there. I prefer this because of its versatility for browning and the minimization of toxic chemicals, especially since we avoid non-stick surfaces in the rest of our kitchen equipment.
  • It has a saute function that allows you to actually brown ingredients in the pan itself rather than have to cook things in a separate pan and then transfer them to the slow cooker. This is super important if you 1. like flavor and 2. dont like dishes.

Ill often use slow cooking on something Im starting in the morning and eating for dinner since I have the time to let it sit and cook slowly and gently all day. Plus hot dinner when you get home its like having your own personal chef!

My Hands Are Free For Other Things

How to get started with your new instant Pot Pressure ...

Maybe it does takes 20 minutes for that whole chicken to come to pressure, 45 minutes for it to actually cook, and another few minutes to release the pressure.

Yet, using my Instant Pot to cook a whole chicken is a completely hands-free experience. Theres no watching the pot to make sure it doesnt boil over, no stirring, no adjusting burner temperature.

For this reason, I try to use my Instant Pot for all meal components.

I adore those complete meals that are made in only the IP. Once dinner is in and the lid is on, I can turn my attention to other kitchen or non-kitchen things without having to stand over the stove.

I have found that the Instant Pot is truly a set-it-and-forget-it appliance, similar to a slow cooker, but BETTER!

It is such a huge part of my weekly meal planning/prep because I can cook several things in it back-to-back without even having to wash in between!

Which brings me to my next point

This Sounds Too Good To Be True

I wouldnt lie to you. Instant Pot is a misnomer. Its not a miracle, and it does not cook food in an instant. Nothing does, unless you live on Cup Noodles.

Here’s the catch: It takes time for the Instant Pot to come to pressure.

Typically, the time it takes the cooker to get to pressure is not part of that cooking time. For instance, if a pot roast cooks for 30 minutes at pressure, the total time from start to finish for a recipe like this might be more like 45 minutes or more. An Instant Pots heating element has less juice than the burners on your range, so it takes longer to heat food enough to get to pressure.

BUT! The ease of use frees you up to do other things. With most recipes, Instant Pots truly are set it and forget it. Lets say youre making a stir-fry, and youd like brown rice to go with it. Before you start prepping the stir-fry, put the rice and water in the Instant Pot, program it to cook for 22 minutes at pressure, then go about your business.

What Is The Temperature In A Pressure Cooker At Full Pressure

To answer your questions in the most succinct way possible Ill say that the temperature in a stovetop stainless steel or aluminum pressure cooker can max out around 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

This temp is only achieved when the Instant Pot is operating at peak pressure of 15 psi at sea level.

Yes, you heard me right. Please let me explain.

However, first you need to understand how a pressure cooker works.

Why Is It Becoming So Popular

Plain and simple, the Instant Pot makes life easy. It cuts down the time spent in the kitchen and makes it more efficient to cook healthy, nourishing meals that taste really, really good!

For example, you can cook large roasts, broths, and stews that generally take 3-4+ hours to cook, in a mere 30 to 60 minutes. It also offers a timely way to cook grains, rice, lentils and beans. Its also replacing many peoples crock pots and slow cookers since it has the ability to cook low and slow.

Like we mentioned above, its a multi-purpose kitchen appliance, so its especially handy for people with limited counter space, who want to utilise its multiple cooking abilities.

Plus, once youve done the prep and set the Instant Pot to work, there is plenty of time to relax away from the kitchen. Once the cooking is done, the food will be kept warm for up to 10 hours.

Finally, its a huge money saver! It allows home cooks to easily utilise cheap cuts of meat, save on waste with recipes for stocks and broths, and develop recipes that freeze well and can be used later down the road.

Heres my confession: Despite owning two different Instant Pots for over 3 years, I made mushy brown rice this week. Through miscalculation and not enough reading, I added too much water. Instant Pot Steam Setting

The Steam setting on the Instant Pot is perfect for cooking vegetables, fish and seafood, tofu and any other food that is suitable to steaming. This function uses Low pressure, which helps to avoid overcooking the food and means that the Instant Pot will come to pressure quicker. You need to use the trivet/steam rack provided to elevate food from cooking liquid. Always use QR to prevent food from overcooking. Below is how to use the Steam setting on Instant Pot.

  • Turn the Instant Pot on, it will say OFF to indicate the Stand-By mode. Add a cup of water to the inner pot and place the trivet on top. You can place the vegetables or a piece of fish or thinly sliced chicken on top of the trivet OR you can use an additional steam basket or a round pan with holes that fits inside the pot. A steamer basket might be useful for smaller-sized vegetables or cut-up vegetables to prevent them from falling into the water.
  • Secure and lock the lid. Press the Steam button. The default setting is pre-programmed to set the pot to cook at Low pressure for 10 minutes. If you press the Steam button again, you can adjust the mode from Normal to Less or More.
