How Long Does A 5lb Joint Of Beef Take To Cook

If we are cooking our meat right, we should always baste it with the juice from our joints. This will help to keep the meat moist and tender. We should also spoon over any juices that come out of our bones. If there are any, this will ensure that they dont go to waste. Basting is also important when cooking fish, poultry, or vegetables. When cooking vegetables, I usually baster my vegetables with water before putting them in my pot. I do this because I want to get all of those juices out. Also, when I cook vegetables I like to add a little salt and pepper to make sure everything is evenly cooked. You can also add some olive oil to your pan to help with browning.

Growing up my mother hardly ever prepared beef at home. It would make an occasional appearance every other Sunday. It would most probably be roast beef, prepared the Goan way. Goa is a small state in India that used to be a Portuguese colony, so the food is heavily influenced by Portuguese cuisine.

Im sure most of you are not familiar with the Goan preparation of roast beef, it is quite different from the American version. It is marinated with ginger garlic, lemon juice or vinegar and a ton of warming spices like cinnamon, cloves, peppercorns and then pressure-cooked. Technically, I think it should be called pot roast I hope I can share that here in the future.

This pot roast is reminiscent of my Moms roast beef. I can relate to it for 2 reasons

  • She always uses a stove-top pressure cooker to cook the beef roast.
  • The beef is always so tender and juicy.
  • A lot of folks usually get confused between a pot roast and roast beef. The major difference between the two is the cooking technique used. Pot roast uses the technique of braising and for roast beef, the beef is seasoned and roasted in an oven without any liquid.

When overcooked, steak is still edible. It wont be as enjoyable if its not cooked properly.

Be sure to use a digital meat thermometer when checking the temperature. For a medium-rare roast, it should be 120 degrees F.

My 5 Simple Tips To Make The Perfect Instant Pot Beef Pot Roast

    • Brown the beef: Browning = flavor, definitely worth the extra 10 minutes! You want all those browned bits, known as fond stuck at the bottom of the pot, thats the good stuff.
    • Saute the aromatics: Continue building up that flavor by sauteing the onions and garlic. You can also choose to add celery and mushroom along with the onions and garlic.
    • Deglaze the pot with red wine or broth: Deglazing removes the caramelized bits that are stuck at the bottom of the pot and thereby imparts that deep, complex flavor to the pot roast. It will also prevent any potential BURN error.
    • Natural pressure release for at least 10 minutes: Do not do a quick release when it comes to meat. Quick-release is known to make the meat tough. Allow for a natural pressure release for a minimum of 10 minutes before doing a quick release.
    • Meat still tough after the specified time? If you find that beef is still tough, it may just need more cooking time. Put the lid back on and pressure cook on high for an additional 15-20 minutes with a natural pressure release.

Tips For Making 5 Pounds Of Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes

    Type of Potatoes To Use

Every great mashed potatoes recipe begins with picking out the best variety of potato to use. Although you could use just about any potato, there is definitely one type of potato that I highly recommend.

Hands down, no questions asked, the variety of potato that you should purchase for making mashed potatoes are Yukon Gold potatoes.

Yukon Gold potatoes have a natural buttery flavor and cook down perfectly to make mashed potatoes.

They are considered a high starch potato that when cooked the starch granules swell, which will make for the lightest and fluffiest mashed potatoes.

However, if you only have Russet potatoes, you can use them to make mashed potatoes as well.

Although I would recommend that after you peel them that you rinse, soak and drain them in cold water several times to remove some of the excess starch that sits on the outer surface prior to cooking. This will help you get the right amount of starch for light and fluffy potatoes.

    The BEST Liquid to Use

Although you could use water as the liquid to make mashed potatoes, it is best to use something with a little flavor.

I have found that by using a combination of chicken broth and milk it provides the best taste and texture when making Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes.

The chicken broth provides another depth of flavor that water alone could not accomplish. And the milk provides for creamier mashed potatoes.

The cooking time will vary based on meat size, and whether it is thawed or frozen.

For fresh or thawed 2-2.5 pound roast, the cooking time will be about 45-55 minutes on HIGH.

Now, for fresh or thawed 4-5 pound roast, the cooking time will be about 75-85 minutes on HIGH. For the same-sized frozen roast, youll have to add about 20-30 minutes to the cooking time.

However, check on the meat and see if its tender and shreddable, if not pressure cook for longer.

What Is The Difference Between A Natural And Manual Release On The Instant Pot

Instant Pot Chuck Roast with veggies

A natural release means to allow the Instant Pot to slowly lose pressure on its own. You dont have to touch any buttons or steam valves since the Instant Pot will automatically start naturally releasing pressure as soon as the timer hits zero and beeps.

A quick-release, or a manual release, is when you manually turn or press the vent valve to quickly release the pressure. The pressure is completely gone once the valve drops.

The Instant Pot will let out a lot of steam when being released manually, so its important to either use a wooden spoon, or my favorite is to use a long oven mitt to protect my hand and forearm from the hot steam.
