How Much Rice Can I Cook

Boiled Eggs (Instant Pot)

One last rule of thumb to keep in mind is that youll need to cook at least 1 1/2 cups of rice in a 6-quart pressure cooker to get nice, even results. This is because the bottom of the pot isnt perfectly flat, but slightly concave. If you use less rice, the grains in the middle of the pot will not cook as evenly, since they wont be submerged in the water as much as the rice on the sides of the pot.

On the flip side, dont overfill your pressure cooker with too much rice, either! It should be half full or less when youre cooking any grains, beans, pastas, or other foods that can tend to foam up. I find that I get the best results when I cook between 1 1/2 and 3 cups of rice at a time.

  • TIP! By the way, you can always make extra rice and freeze the extra. Here’s how to do that.

Those are my best tips for cooking rice! Of course, you can also just follow the basic recipe below. Either way, enjoy!

Add The Eggs To The Egg Racks

I have the set of stacked racks seen below. It allows me to make lots of eggs at once. First, set the lower rack in the pot and start loading in the eggs.

After the first rack is full, set your second rack on top and start loading the eggs into it.

  • Save

It is very important, especially if youre making deviled eggs and you want your eggs to look pretty with centered yolks, to place the eggs with the pointy tip facing down. This will ensure a centered yolk every time!

  • Save

I want to point out that I only needed to make a dozen eggs here, but you can use the center ring on both racks and cook a total of 14 eggs.

What Are Some Good Fillings For Egg Bites

In addition to the eggs, add some cheese and chopped up add-ins to make your egg bites fun and flavorful.

I like to blend a mixture of cottage cheese and any soft cheese into the eggs, then stir in some shredded hard cheese with the other mix-ins.

For eggier, less cheesy bites, you can certainly skip or reduce the amount of cheese. If so, you may want to add extra eggs or egg whites to make up the volume, so your bites arent too small.

For the egg bites pictured here, I used some chopped breakfast sausage, bell pepper, and green onions. Egg bites are a great repository for any leftovers, toothink cooked meat or roasted veggies from last nights dinner.

Here are some other ideas to try:

  • Wilted spinach and cheese
  • Crumbled bacon

How To Peel Hard

After making your hard-boiled eggs in the Instant Pot, knowing just how to peel a hard-boiled egg will save you a lot of trouble. We recommend using a spoon to separate the egg from the shell, peeling the cracked hard-boiled egg with your hands under cold running water or shaking the hard-boiled egg in a mason jar with water .

Where To Buy An Instant Pot

Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

This is the 6-quart Instant Pot I started out with. After a few years, we added an 8-quart partly because I knew I would use two at the same time often enough, partly because it was the Prime Day sale, and also because I wanted more space for certain recipes. Both are a pretty basic model and you dont need more bells and whistles than that!

If youre deciding on size, most people say its better to get a deal on the 6-quart and just have 2 rather than go big, BUT if your family has 5 or more people or you really like to batch cook or do more than a pound of beans, the 8-quart may be the best choice. Use A Natural Pressure Release

No matter what kind of rice youre cooking, its a good idea to let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes before opening the pot. This allows the moisture to distribute evenly throughout the grains, and helps it unstick from the bottom of the pot, too.

You *can* open the pot with a quick pressure release if you like, but it really does benefit from a little resting time!

Pressure Cooker Hard Boiled Eggs

Why is that?? Well theyre one of their favorite snacks, and they loved deviled eggs too!

  • Before finding this Instant Pot 2 tier egg rack steamer I could only make a few hard boiled eggs at a time. That was fine if I was just making a few for the girls after school snack.
  • If I wanted to make a lot of deviled eggs though, or a big batch of egg salad sandwiches for all of us I had to go thru the process twice.
  • Instant Pot poached eggs are great for breakfast too.

Now, you could make soft boiled eggs as well by decreasing the cook time to 4 minutes on high pressure instead of 5. This will be subjective of course depending on just how soft you want them.

  • Try this and see if you want them even softer. If so 3 minutes may be the perfect soft boiled egg recipe for you. Just use an 8 or 6 quart Instant Pot, either one will do with your cups of water in the bottom.

How Long To Boil Eggs In The Instant Pot:

Instant Pot Soft Boiled Eggs: 5 minutes on high pressure was what it took for consistently fully cooked egg whites with a wet yolk. Ive seen several tutorials say 4, 3 or even 2 minutes, but I found anything less than 5 minutes to have a portion of the whites still a little wet and more difficult to peel.

Medium Boiled Eggs: A range of 6-8 minutes seemed to all produced medium boiled eggs. These have fully cooked whites with a tender and somewhat creamy center.

Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs: It took from 9-10 minutes on high pressure with 10 minutes being a dry yolk the ideal texture for making deviled eggs.

How Many Eggs Can You Make At A Time

Heres the best part! You can really cook as many eggs or as little as youd like. This method would even work if you wanted only one hard boiled egg, but since we do this for meal prep for the week, I like to cook 12 all at the same time and they come out great. Ive found that 12 eggs fit perfectly on the metal rack at the bottom of your Instant Pot, but if you decide to cook more than 12 eggs at a time, I highly suggest getting this steamer basket. I have this exact one and it works great! The steamer basket also makes transferring the eggs to the ice bath super easy too! Ive actually made two dozen hard boiled eggs using the steamer basket over Easter and they were all perfection.

How To Hard Boil Eggs In The Instant Pot Without A Trivet

When we traveled with our Instant Pot for six weeks, I completely forgot to pack the trivet. We definitely wanted hard-boiled eggs for potato salad and egg salad to pack as a lunch, and I was stymied! I wasnt sure what to do.

How could I keep the eggs out of the water without a trivet?

I managed to hack my way into a solution in two different homes and in two different ways.

Once we found a silicone trivet like the kind that youre supposed to set a hot pot on to protect your countertops. It was about a centimeter tall, and it actually worked to keep the eggs from bouncing around on the bottom of the Instant Pot. They cooked fine with that one cup of water spread out pretty thinly in our 8qt Instant Pot.

The other time I couldnt find anything that seemed possible. So I folded up two washcloths or a dish towel, enough to keep the eggs up above the water, and again prevent them from just bouncing around everywhere. This worked too, and since I wasnt hard boiling eggs for Easter, it was okay if a couple of them cracked in the process.

So if you find yourself without a trivet, you can still hard boil eggs, but its well worth the space to buy one along with these other useful Instant Pot accessories.

You can even get trivets designed to make hard-boiling eggs super easy and to minimize bumping and cracking. I dont find them strictly necessary, but I will say this egg trivet looks like a great choice if youre going to invest in one.

Easy Peel Hard Boiled Eggs

Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs

The most interesting thing Alex and I found as we experimented with this Instant Pot hard boiled eggs recipe is that it makes easy peel hard boiled eggs! This is not something we were expecting, but it was an added bonus to boiling eggs in an Instant Pot.

How to peel hard boiled eggs? For this recipe you can gently tap the bottom of the egg until the shell crushes, then remove the shell in pieces. We used to gently roll the egg long-wise to crush the shell all around, but this can sometimes cause the white of the egg to break. For this Instant Pot hard boiled eggs recipe, the eggs are so easy to peel that you only need to tap one end to get it started.

From there, youre ready to get cooking: whether its our Easy Deviled Eggs made with a swirl of Greek yogurt, or our classic Egg Salad Sandwich.

Why Do You Put Boiled Eggs In Ice Water

The idea of placing the eggs in ice cold water helps the eggs to peel easily, but it also prevents the discolored yolk. The strange color that sometimes forms around hard boiled yolks is a reaction of the sulfur in the egg white and the iron in the yolk . By placing the warm eggs in ice water, it stops the cooking process and helps to stop the discoloration.

Place Eggs On The Basket Rack

Generally, when I hard boil eggs in an Instant Pot, I hard boil 6-7, which is enough for us for one breakfast. This is because they will all fit on the rack without touching the sides. They are perfectly elevated off the surface of the Instant Pot all around.

For this post, I stuck 13 eggs in there to show that you can pack it full. The few eggs touching the sides did have a brown spot on the shell where they were leaning, but otherwise, the actual cooking was perfect for all of them still.

How Do You Make Instant Pot Egg Bites

How to Make Hard Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot

This recipe uses three large eggs to make seven egg bites, using this model of silicone mold. Searching egg bite mold on Amazon, yields tons of results. Any of the similarly-shaped brands will work well.

I prefer to use one mold at a time, since the egg bites tend to come out more evenly cooked and more nicely shaped that way. But you can also double the recipe and stack two molds on top of each other.

To double this recipe and cook two trays of egg bites at once:

  • Be sure to put a round of parchment over the top of both layers The parchment keeps condensation on the lid from dripping down into the bites.
  • Just increase the cooking time to 10 minutes to ensure that the double batch cooks through.

Here’s a tip from the comments from reader Barb: If you don’t have any silicone egg molds, you can use use 4-ounce Ball canning jars. The recipe should be just enough to fill 6 of them. Because they’re glass, best to lower the time to 4 minutes, with 4 minutes of natural pressure release.

You can also use silicone muffin liners. You may need to play around with the cooking time.

A Few Ways I Like To Use Hard Boiled Eggs:

  • I always keep a batch of hard boiled eggs on hand in my refrigerator for breakfast on the go, add to salads, etc.
  • Have you tried a breakfast salad? I first had one a few years ago and think its genius. I prefer to make them with soft boiled eggs, but you can use whatever you like.
  • Make deviled eggs. Or for a twist on the classic, guacamole deviled eggs.
  • Make a healthier egg salad by swapping mayo for mashed avocado.
  • Top them on your avocado toast.
  • Use them to whip up a quick egg sandwich, this is my daughter Karinas favorite egg sandwich.
  • Add them to mason jar salads for protein, this is one of my favorites.

Do The Eggs Break Or Crack In The Instant Pot

While I havent had an egg break or crack in the instant pot, it is still a possible thing to happen, just like it can happen when you boil the eggs in water on stove top.

This can happen due to many reasons.

Some eggs may have a hairline crack even before you start cooking them.

So naturally, when you boil that egg, the crack will increase further which is very normal.

If any of the eggs that you place for cooking in the instant pot has a hairline crack, it will have a tendency to break its shell and leak some of the white and yellow parts of the eggs.

However, even if the eggs break while you boil them, they are usually perfectly edible though, since they are completely cooked.

Another reason for a cracked egg is that the egg might have moved around and collided with other eggs while you boiled them.

When you use a rack or trivet, the chances of this happening is very less.

However, when you boil the eggs directly in the pot, I guess there is more chance to that possibility just like it can happen when you boil the eggs in water on stove top.

Keep in mind that it is perfectly normal that sometimes eggs do crack while we make boiled eggs, but the good news is that they are perfectly edible!

One tip to reduce the chances of eggs breaking or cracking in the instant pot is to place them around the edges of the pot, like in a circle so they wont move much while boiling.

If you keep them towards the center, there is more chance of the eggs moving around.
