Tips For Making Fluffy Rice In The Instant Pot

To make perfectly cooked jasmine rice in the Instant Pot, it helps to do two things:

  • Rinse the rice prior to adding it to the Instant Pot. This removes much of the starch that would cause the rice to clump together.
  • Let the Instant Pot release steam naturally. Rather than manually releasing steam right after the Instant Pot has cooked the rice for 4 minutes, allow the Instant Pot to automatically switch over to Keep Warm mode. You will know it is in Keep Warm mode because the Instant Pot will display an L and the number of minutes it has been in Keep Warm mode will keep counting up. Allow the rice to stay in the Instant Pot until it has been in Keep Warm mode for 10 minutes. Then, move the steam valve to the Vent position so the final small amount of steam can release. Finally, open the lid and fluff the rice with a wooden spoon.

Instant Pot Brown Rice Method: Rinsed 20 Minutes High Pressure Quick Release

    • Rating: 8/10
    • Timing: 32 minutes, including 10 minutes to come to pressure

About this method:This method from Minimalist Baker was suggested by Kitchns Editor-in-Chief, Faith Durand. You rinse the rice, combine it with 2 cups of water, cook it under pressure for 20 minutes, then do a quick release at the end of cooking.

Results: This pot of brown rice had nice, tight individual grains, but the rice was slightly undercooked, making it chewier than wed like. We have mixed feeling about this method: Its ideal for meal prepping because the slightly chewy rice is excellent for reheating or for using in cooked dishes, but its not the best for eating freshly cooked rice. This method is excellent if you plan on reheating the rice or cooking it further .

Can You Substitute The Water With Other Liquids

Substituting water for other liquids like soup stocks and broths adds a burst of flavor to the rice. Whether you choose to use only broth or a mix of broth and water, make sure there is still a 1:1 ratio between rice and liquid. Alternatively, for a creamier liquid like coconut milk, use about half as much, creating a 2:1 ratio of rice to liquid. This prevents the rice from cooking improperly or unevenly.

    Soak Rice For 20 Minutes

I tried both soaking rice and skip soaking rice prior to cook rice in the Instant Pot. Whether its cooked in manual mode or Rice mode, when I didnt soak rice, it did not become tender all the way through.

This is probably the only difference between cooking other types of rice. I often get asked why we need to soak Japanese short grain rice. Unlike the other types of rice, Japanese short grain rice is plump, and it takes time for the moisture to go through. Therefore, we always soak the rice first, giving the dry rice a head start in absorbing moisture.

Why The Instant Pot Is Best For Fluffy Rice:

    • Consistent: Cooking rice on the stove top can vary so much that its hard to get consistent results every time. Depending on how your lid fits, the size of the pot and your heating element you make never get the same result twice.
    • Steady Results: The instant pot is consistent because there is no water lost through evaporation. The heat source is always consistent and the time and setting is the time every time.
    • Natural release: When the rice is done cooking, leave the rice undisturbed and the pressure will naturally begin to release. After about 15 minutes you can manually release the remaining pressure before opening it.

    • Starch: Rinsing your rice before cooking will help get rid of the extra starch which is found on Rice. This extra starch when cooked causes the rice to become sticky and gloopy. Rinsing will take off that extra starch and insure nice fluffy individual grains of rice.
    • Impurities: No method of preparing rice for the store shelf is perfect. Rinsing your rice will also help get rid of any impurities, such as dirt, left over pesticides and help sanitize your rice making for a healthy meal.

Instant Pot Rice: Here’s How To Make It

This is how to cook delicious rice in your Instant Pot every time.

    The Instant Pot Max.

If you own an Instant Pot, you know they’re super-convenient kitchen gadgets. They not only save time, they also create less mess so clean-up is a snap. You can whip up delicious rice in your Instant Pot, too . The problem is the printed manual and bundled recipe book give only vague instructions. And Instant Pot’s own guide clashes with many rice recipes on its website.

To settle the matter, I tested my hand at batch after batch of Instant Pot rice. This guide lays out what worked for me in simple steps you can try yourself. Soon you’ll be leaning on your new Instant Pot to pull double duty as a speedy rice-maker too.

Key Steps For Rice In The Instant Pot

    • Rinse the rice before cooking. Rinsing rice before cooking removes any dirt from processing, gets rid of starch that can make the rice sticky, and, Ive found, makes the rice taste better. According to Instant Pots manual, rinsing the rice also makes up for the small amount of moisture lost in evaporation during the cooking process.
    • Use the right ratio of rice to water. Instant Pot suggests any rice can be cooked with a one-to-one rice-to-water ratio, but during testing, we found this wasnt universally true both among Instant Pot models and other multi-cookers. Use slightly more water when cooking brown rice and wild rice to prevent undercooking and scorching. Plus, its better to err on the side of more water, since most rice varieties can be drained if theres excess moisture.
    • Pressure cook the rice on high. Lock the lid in place and set to cook at HIGH pressure for the following times:
    • White rice : 5 minutes
    • Long-grain brown rice: 10 minutes
    • Wild rice: 15 minutes
  • Let the rice natural release for at least 10 minutes. Using natural release for rice yields fluffy results and less likelihood that the rice on the bottom of the pot will stick or burn.

How Much Rice Can You Cook In The Instant Pot

The most rice Ive ever cooked at one time is 3 cups of dry rice with 3 cups of water. I think you could probably go up to 5 cups of dry rice, as long as you dont fill the pot more than halfway full for safety.

Rice creates foamy, starchy water as it cooks, so you wouldnt want it to rise too high during the cooking cycle and damage your pot.

When doubling or tripling a recipe in the Instant Pot, the cooking time doesnt change. However, the overall time will be longer when you cook a larger quantity, because it will take longer for the pot to come to pressure when compared to a smaller quantity of rice.
