Why Instant Pot Ham

No More Dried Out Ham: Instant Pot Honey Baked Ham

The Instant Pot heats your spiral ham with wet heat so that the meat doesnt dry out, because few things are sadder than a dry ham. The pressure cooker works by building up steam inside the pot. Its a great way to cook ham because all that moisture means that your meat wont dry out. The best part is that this brown sugar-glazed ham is ready to eat in just about 45 minutes!

That frees both you up for making side dishes or desserts, getting the house ready for the party, setting your holiday table, or simply relaxing!

How To Cook A Ham In An Instant Pot

Cooking a bone-in ham in the Instant Pot is really not much different that making, say, my Instant Pot salsa chicken. Overall, the ham in Instant Pot technique is very similar: you cook the ham on a trivet, remove it after a short Natural Pressure Release , and then sauté the remaining liquid from the pineapple, brown sugar, and ham drippings to make a delicious glaze.

A key difference is that youll use a couple of pieces of heavy duty aluminum foil to form a sort of bowl around the ham. A cup of water goes in the bottom of the Instant Pot insert, along with the trivet, and then the loosely wrapped spiral ham is set on top. Pour a 16-oz. can of crushed pineapple over top of the ham, tucking some pineapple in between the spiral slices, and then sprinkle 1/4 cup of brown sugar over the top.

Pressure cook the ham according to the notes in the recipe, and then allow the ham to sit for about 5 minutes before releasing any remaining pressure. Remove the ham, allowing any juices and drippings in the aluminum foil bowl to drain back into the pot.

If you want to make the pineapple brown sugar glaze at this point , turn the Instant Pot on to Sauté and add 1 tablespoon of cornstarch thats mixed into 2 tablespoons of water to the water/juice/drippings mixture. Whisk until it thickens sufficiently, and then pour it over your cooked ham or serve alongside for guests to drizzle at will.

Benefits Of Cooking Ham In The Instant Pot

I used to cook ham in the oven, and a lot of times it turned out dry and tough. When you cook it in the Instant Pot you get a tender and juicy ham with some additional benefits:

  • You save space in the oven if you are cooking other items that you need the oven for.
  • The Instant Pot locks the juices in so you wont get a dry ham.
  • You can use one pot to make both the ham and the glaze!

After you make ham in a pressure cooker, you wont want to cook a ham in any other way. Forget using an oven, the Instant Pot makes for the juiciest and most flavorful ham youll ever have.

I used my 6-quart Instant Pot to cook a bone-in spiral cut ham and it is the best ham Ive ever had. Really.

This ham is better than those honey-baked hams I used to spend a fortune on back in the day. Back then, I never cared much for the ham itself but rather always looked forward to using the ham bone. This ham recipe has changed that for me. Now, I love the ham just as much as the bone! And if you know me, that is saying a lot.

Are Beans And Cornbread Good For You

Can You Cook Ham in an Instant Pot?

Beans and cornbread make up a very healthy meal because these two ingredients together make up a complete protein. This makes beans and cornbread a filling and nutritious meal for vegetarians and vegans.

For people who are health-conscious and trying to cut back on animal products in their diet, beans can add protein without the necessity for animal protein. As far as meatless Monday meals go, beans and cornbread is a definite favorite for many people.

The only health risks associated with slow-cooked beans are with the meals theyre served with. Beans tend to be a side dish for fried foods or foods with a lot of butter in them.

To avoid over-indulging, make sure that the beans make up the largest portion you get served rather than fried meat or macaroni.

What Is The Best Way To Cook A Pre

So, youve found yourself with a pre-cooked ham. There are a couple different things you can do with it. First, because it is fully cooked, ham can be eaten as-is! Slice it up cold and have yourself a delicious sandwich or chilled meat dish.

I personally think that the best way to cook a pre-cooked ham is to give it a nice fruit-based glaze. Many people love a pineapple glaze or a cranberry glaze works great too. The contrast of the sweet fruit with the salty meat is mouth watering.

Whether youre baking your pre-cooked ham in the oven or cooking ham in the instant pot, a fruit glaze will help to seal in the moisture to the meat and give it a nice crisp crust on the outside.

A traditionally baked ham takes a long time, but instant pot ham cooking time is under an hour. Plus, because the instant pot relies on pressure and steam, there is nowhere for the moisture of the ham to escape. If you cook a pre-cooked ham in the instant pot, your meat is guaranteed to be moist and delicious!

    Pressure Cooker Ham Cook Times:

How long to cook boneless ham in Instant Pot or pressure cooker:

    • 3 pound ham = 4-5 minutes
    • 4 pound ham = 5-6 minutes
    • 5 pound ham = 6-7 minutes
    • 6 pound ham = 7-8 minutes
    • 7 pound ham = 8-9 minutes
    • 8 pound ham = 9-10 minutes
    • 9 pound ham = 10-11 minutes

*For bone-in hams, simply add in 3-4 minutes to your cook time. So for instance, the ham I cooked for these photos was a 9 pound ham and it was bone-in.

So I cooked my 9 pound ham for the 11 minutes it takes for that size ham PLUS I added 4 minutes for the fact that it was a bone-in ham. So the total cook time for my ham was 15 minutes.

How Long To Cook Instant Pot Bone In Ham

The biggest thing to remember is that this recipe calls for an already pre-cooked bone in ham.

That means that technically, you dont have to cook it at all if you dont want to.

But because we like to eat our ham heated up and flavored, we prefer to cook it.

Our Instant Pot Bone In Ham was not sliced prior to heating. It was one solid big piece of meat.

That meant that it would require a longer cooking time in order for the center to be heated throughout.

However, if you use a spiral cut pre-cooked ham, the cooking time will need to be reduced.

For our 7.5 lb ham 30 minutes of cooking time was perfect. The ham was super moist and was nice and hot.

Because ham sizes vary so much we have including the recommended cooking times for both smaller and bigger bone in ham in the recipe below.

And if you are looking for a great dessert after you have the ham, try our Homemade Carrot Cake recipe. Its to die for!

Instant Pot Ham And Bean Soup

    Instant Pot Bone

If you are looking for a delicious winter soup recipe using the Instant Pot, try out this ham and bean soup in the Instant Pot. Youll combine diced onions, carrots, and celery, which are cooked until soft using the sauté mode on the instant pot. Youll then add garlic, which will help to add more flavor to the dish. Diced ham is then added for a few minutes before you add in beans, chicken broth, bay leaf, thyme, crushed red peppers, and salt to taste.

To cook the dish, youll use the high pressure mode for 30 minutes. After thats done, simply let it do a natural release for roughly ten minutes, followed by the quick release. This dish is packed with flavor, but of course, you can adjust the ingredients to suit your tastes and what you have in your home at the time. We love using the Instant Pot for soups, as it creates the perfect consistency each and every time.

How To Heat Precooked Ham Slices In An Instant Pot

This ham recipe will work in any brand of electric pressure cooker, including the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi, or Power Pressure Cooker XL.

In fact, you can use this Instant Pot method to heat most precooked meats, including pastrami, and turkey.

The great part about Instant Pot ham is how incredibly simple it is to reheat the meat.

If you choose to glaze your ham, I recommend adding it to the ham before you wrap it in tin foil.

Tip: If your ham didnt come with a tasty glaze, try this copycat Honey Baked ham glaze recipe.

Wrapping the ham tightly in tin foil seals all of the moisture inside to keep the ham from drying out as it warms.

Next, set up the pressure cooker pot with a low rack and 1 cup of water in the bottom. Use a foil sling to gently lower the ham onto the rack.

Let the pressure release naturally for at least 10 minutes, so the meat stays juicy. Then unwrap the ham and test to ensure it is warmed to your desired temperature.

How Do I Cook Ham In A Pressure Cooker

There are a few different things to consider when cooking your pineapple ham in an Instant Pot. In addition to the flavors you want to add to your finished dish, youll also need to decide which method youll use when preparing your ham. There are two cooking methods you can use to cook a ham in an Instant Pot:

    • Pressure cooking. The most popular way to use an Instant Pot is as a pressure cooker. When cooking your ham using the pressure cooking function on the pot, you can heat your ham more quickly thanks to the increased pressure inside the pot.
    • Slow cooking. Another great way to use your Instant Pot for cooking a holiday ham is the slow cooker function. Like a Crock Pot, the Instant Pots slow cooker option allows you to cook the ham at a low temperature for a longer period of time, allowing the ham to develop more flavor and moisture as it cooks.

    Instant Pot Bone In Ham

So that is why I decided to make Instant Pot Bone In Ham this year!

Because the ham is already pre-cooked, all I had to do was to heat it up. And what better way to do that than by using my 6 quart Instant Pot Duo.

This left me more room in my oven for the side dishes that requiring browning, such as oven roasted carrots, green bean casserole and roasted Brussels sprouts.

And I had to save my slow cooker for my scalloped potatoes.

Plus, with the moist heat that is used to pressure cook the ham, I knew that it would be nice and juicy.

I have always preferred bone in ham. When cooked, the bone provides so much additional flavor to the meat as compared to a boneless ham.

Yes, it is easier not to have to deal with the bone when carving the ham. But for us we freeze the leftover bone to make ham and bean soup on a cold winter day.
