How To Make Rice In A Pressure Cooker

Here’s a faster and easier way to make white rice.

Want a fast way to make white rice that requires little attention and produces fluffy, separate grains every time? Use a pressure cooker. The interesting thing about cooking rice in a pressure cooker is that you need less water. In a traditional covered pot, water evaporates during the entire cooking time, so you need lots of water to compensate for that loss. In a pressure cooker, once the cooker has come up to pressure, it becomes a sealed environment that allows no further evaporation. So no matter how much rice you cook, you need to add only enough water to equal the volume of rice plus ¼ cup.

Heres how: Place 1 cup long-grain white, jasmine, or basmati rice in fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold running water until water runs clear, then transfer rice to stovetop or electric pressure cooker and add 1¼ cups water and ½ teaspoon salt, if desired. For each additional cup rice, add only 1 cup water . Cook rice at high pressure for 3 minutes, then remove pressure cooker from heat or turn it off and let pressure release naturally for 10 minutes. Open pressure cooker, fluff rice with fork, and serve.

The rice is still being cooked during this natural release stage, but 10 minutes is plenty of time for the rice to finish cooking. After 10 minutes, there is not much pressure left, so you dont need to worry about releasing the pressure.

Use A Natural Pressure Release

No matter what kind of rice youre cooking, its a good idea to let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes before opening the pot. This allows the moisture to distribute evenly throughout the grains, and helps it unstick from the bottom of the pot, too.

Is rice good for you?

This is like a never ending debate!

I grew up in a family where rice was eaten every day. A meal would just not be complete until there was rice on the table. Thats because we belong to a region in India where rice was grown in abundance and my grand-father was a farmer, so we had rice farms! And since there was so much rice, it was obviously eaten all the time.

Growing up I never thought if rice was good or bad. However in spite of growing up in such an environment I never became a rice fan. I dont know why! While no one in my family could finish their meals without rice, I chose to avoid it whenever I could.

I always preferred my roti and eating rice seemed like a chore. All the rice in my home was always white. I didnt even know about brown rice until I grew up and it became a trend!

And hence came the debate that which rice is better for you brown or white?

Both white rice and brown rice are high in carbohydrates. White rice is basically brown rice minus the germ and the bran. Because brown rice contains the whole grain it is said to be a healthier alternative. It has more fiber, minerals and vitamins than the white counterpart.

But according to some studies, white rice is more easily digestible and hence a better alternative for the gut.

Rice Usually Fails To Cook In A Few Ways:

How To Cook Perfect Rice in the Instant Pot
  • Too watery: this means your rice is under-cooked.
  • Hard, chewy, or burnt: this means you didnt add enough water or its overcooked.
  • Too mushy and sticky: this means you added way too much water.

So, the water-to-rice ratios and the cooking times are the utmost important factors for making perfectly cooked rice. Every grain is different though.

Instant Pot Chicken & Rice

If there’s one thing we find magical about Instant Pots, it’s how quickly and perfectly they cook chicken and rice. The rice is the perfect texture and the chicken is insanely tender. This is the meal we cook in the Instant Pot the most often.

IMPORTANT! If using newer versions of Instant Pot, especially 8-quart capacity models, we recommend removing the inner pot after sautéing and letting it cool off for 5 to 10 minutes before moving on to the pressure cooking stage. This will help prevent a potential burn warning.

    Instant Pot White Rice

Growing up we always made our white rice in the rice cooker.

It was quick, easy, and was pretty much foolproof.

If youd asked me up until about a year ago Id say the rice cooker was the only way.

That is, until the magical powers of the Instant Pot were discovered.

Not only do the grains cook up until perfectly tender and ultra fluffy, but its also ready in a fraction of the time.

Im talking like HALF of the time it takes for a rice cooker or a stovetop method.

Instant Pot white rice in only 20 minutes while cooking it in a rice cooker takes closer to 40 minutes!

And the process is so simple to follow, you might even end up tossing that ole rice cooker away!

How Do You Make Rice In The Instant Pot

Its very simple, but there are a couple changes that I make from my traditional recipe for perfect rice on the stovetop. First is the water ratio While I generally use 1 cup rice to 1 ¼ cups water for my stovetop rice, in the Instant Pot, that ratio drops down to 1-to-1. 1 cup of water for every one cup of rice You can make as little or as much Instant Pot rice as youd like.

The reason for the reduced water is that the Instant Pot is more sealed than a traditional cooking pot, meaning less evaporation of water during the cooking process. Be sure to rinse that rice before adding it to the Instant Pot, to get rid of any additional starches Just run it under water until the water is clear. The result is perfect Instant Pot rice thats light and fluffy.

I also like to add in 1 teaspoon of oil for each cup of rice that Im making This not only prevents the rice from sticking to the pot, but it also cuts down on the foaming a bit so that your Instant Pot doesnt sputter and spit. Plus, for perfect Instant Pot rice, I always add a pinch of salt for each cup of rice that Im cooking, to flavor the rice right from the get-go.
