    How To Store Black Beans

Cooked black beans will keep well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week, or you can freeze them for a longer shelf life. To freeze black beans, line a large baking sheet or plate with parchment paper.

Pour the cooked beans on the lined pan, and arrange them in a single layer. This way they will freeze individually, instead of in big clumps. This makes measuring them later easier! Freeze for 2 hours, or until the beans feel frozen, then transfer to an airtight container to store in the freezer for up to 6 months. The beans should remain individually frozen this way, so theyll be easy to thaw and measure for recipes later.

How To Make Black Beans Without Soaking

8 out of 10 times, I do remember to soak the beans. But for those 2 times that I don’t, the no-soak method comes in handy. I rinse the dried beans in tap water, 2-3 times, till the water runs clear.

I follow my regular recipe recipe and add the drained beans , and add 3 times the water with that. So, that’s 3 cups of water for 1 cup of dried beans. I pressure cook for 50 minutes, for a softer texture. If you prefer them slightly more firm, cook them for 45 minutes.

How To Use And Store Beans

One 15-ounce can of beans holds about 1 3/4 cups cooked beans, so substitute accordingly in your recipes. For reference, one pound of dried beans makes about five cups of cooked beans.

Let beans cool completely, then store in their liquid in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Beans also freeze beautifully. I usually freeze them in their liquid in ziplock bags , which take up less space in the freezer and thaw more quickly. Freeze for up to three months.

    Bean Cooking Tips & Notes

    Instant Pot Black Beans
    • Soak – Soaking your beans dramatically cuts down on cook time, as well as making them easier on your stomach
    • Salt – Beans soaked and cooked in salt water are more flavorful and tender, without bursting out of their skins
    • Add enough water for soaking – Make sure you cover your beans by 2″ when soaking them. This allows the beans to re-hydrate and become more tender.
    • Add a pinch of baking soda while cooking – Baking soda creates an alkaline environment, which allows the beans to cook more quickly and turn soft and creamy from within.

To Soak Or Not To Soak

If youve ever cooked any dried beans, Im sure youre familiar with the process of soaking the beans prior to cooking. Soaking helps to cut down on cooking time, and can result in a better consistency.

    • Rinse and soak beans overnight, or for 8 hours. Alternatively, use the no-soak method.
    • Turn on the Instant Pot. Heat oil on Saute mode . Ad crushed garlic, followed by chopped onions. Saute for 1 minute, or until the onions turns translucent.
    • Add rinsed and drained beans, seasoning and water. Cancel Saute. Pressure cook on Bean/Chili Mode or Pressure cook mode for 30 minutes. Reduce time to 25 minutes for a more firm texture.
    • Let the pressure release naturally for 15 mins . After that, release pressure manually. You can do that by turning the pressure knob to ‘venting’ position in DUO model, or, push down the pressure valve in ULTRA model.

    Black Beans Vs Kidney Beans

Black Beans are smaller and slightly harder than kidney beans. They have a mild taste with subtle sweetness and have a soft and creamy texture once cooked.

Kidney Beans, on the other hand, are softer than black beans and the flavor is not too strong or plain. However, it can absorb flavors very well.

Other than the taste, these two hearty beans are similar and can be used interchangeably. Both beans have the same health benefits and nutritional value, except that kidney beans are lower in Vitamin K.

They are both rich in vitamins and minerals like:

  • Vitamin A
  • Healthy digestion
  • Weight loss
  • Note: Improperly cooked, undercooked, or raw Kidney Beans are toxic. Eating them may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Can You Use Old Dried Beans

Yes, you sure can. The biggest thing about dried beans if they are older, you will have to add a bit of time to your method.

Dried beans after they sit for so long, you will find they just need additional cook time to ensure they are fully cooked and tender. While I recommend fresh dried beans, you can use old if that is all you have.
