  • Natural Pressure Release is for tougher cuts of meat, recipes with high starch and recipes with a high volume of liquid.
  • Quick Release is to be used for more delicate cuts of meat and vegetables–like seafood, chicken breasts, and steaming vegetables.

Important Tip for using Quick Release on your Instant Pot: Place a towel over the valve and use a wooden spoon or pot holder to manually turn valve from seal to venting. The towel will help to prevent your steam burning your face or hands and if the recipe starts to spew liquid, you protect your walls and ceilings from being covered in cooking liquid.

Check Silicone Sealing Ring

How to install sealing ring on Instant Pot? Put the sealing ring on top of the rack on the Instant Pot lid, then gently run your fingers along the ring as you push it into the rack.

Its criticalto ensure the silicone sealing ring is seated properly, and there isnt anything stuck on the ring or rack.

*Caution: Never pull the ring by force as it may stretch or damage the ring and affect the sealing function. Dont use it if it has cracks, cuts, or any other damages.

Do you need a spare sealing ring? Its always good to have a spare Silicone Sealing Ring because they do wear and tear. Plus, the ring may get stinky as it absorbs food odors over time. If you like, you can dedicate 1 Sealing Ring for Savory food, and the other for Sweets.

When And How To Use A Quick Release

“Use a quick release when you want to get into the cooker fast,” says Bir.

Rather than letting your food sit in the cooker as the pressure slowly releases, a quick release calls for action. The valve is opened manually and all of the pent-up steam comes rushing out. “Manual is handy when you have quick-cooking foods, like tender greens or seafood, that would become overcooked with the slower process of a natural release,” says Bir.

Some quick, one-pot meals also call for quick releases as well as pasta dishes. Pay close attention to what a recipe calls for, since using the wrong release can not only ruin a dish, but also make a serious mess in your kitchen. If the pot is very full or the dish inside has foamed up, the valve will not only release steam but sputters of hot liquid.

To use the quick release function, turn the steam handle release knob or press the steam release button on the Instant Pot lid. If your valve and steam release are all one mechanism, Bir recommends using a long-handled spoon to push the valve from sealing to open as an extra safety measure against steam burns. Once all of the pressure has released, the float valve will descend and the lid will unlock.

Quick tip: “Always remember steam is hotter than boiling water, and it can cover a lot of surface fast. Steam burns suck,” says Bir. Keep your hands and face clear of the lid for the entire time it is releasing pressure.

The Instant Pot Keeps Beeping

Its normal for the pot to beep as it starts to heat, beep when its starting the timer, and beep when the timer is done. If its beeping otherwise, that usually means something is wrong, and you should look to see if theres a code flashing on the screen. This most often indicates an overheating issue that your Instant Pot wants you to know about ASAP.

Depressurizing With Quick Release Using Cold Water Is An Option For Stovetop Models

How to open stuck instant pot lid

This quick release method is the quickest way to depressurize a pressure cooker. However, you should ensure that the manufacturer does not advise against the use of cold water release.

The process involves putting the stovetop pressure cooker pot in the sink and running cold tap water over it. Make sure the valves or vents are not in the direct path of the water. This release method takes about 20 seconds and as such, it is ideal for foods with shorter cooking times.

This method should never be used with electric pressure cookers.

Vent The Food And Enjoy

Once the cook time has passed, often you’ll then move the valve to “venting” which, in a glorious geyser of food smells, will release the pressure and steam inside your Instant Pot. Be careful touching the valve, it can get hot. Either wear an oven mitt or move the valve with a wooden spoon. It will release a lot of hot air, so it’s a good idea to lean back the first time you move the valve, and definitely keep your eyes away from the valve when you let it vent.

Once the Instant Pot is done venting this might take a few minutes remove the lid and gaze upon your finished food and enjoy.

A side note: in the picture below you can see a little circular valve that looks like a button. When the Instant Pot pressurizes, you should see it rise. This lets you know the Instant Pot is pressurized, which means the lid will be locked. The only way to open the Instant Pot, at that point, is to wait for it to depressurize. So don’t worry, feel safe.

Some recipes, including some very common ones like rice, call for something called a “Natural Pressure Release,” which just means you let the pressure slowly fade inside the Instant Pot. You do not move the valve to “venting” for a certain amount of time. My favorite Instant Pot rice recipe, for instance, calls for just a few minutes of cook time but 10 minutes of natural release before you open the Instant Pot.

Either way, you need to let the pressure release from the Instant Pot, but then you’re ready to enjoy.

How To Cook Anything In The Instant Pot

Before you try braising chicken thighs or making pulled pork in the Instant Pot, try out the multicooker using the water test. This is an initial test run that will allow you to familiarize yourself with the Instant Pots functionality. First, plug the pot into an outlet. Seems obvious but hey, I want to make it clear! Add three cups of water to the inner pot. Twist the lid onto the cooker and lock it into place. Select Manual or Pressure Cook and adjust the cook time to five minutes. Once the cooking cycle has completed, the cooker will beep and switch to Keep Warm. At this time, use the quick release method to switch the valve to the Venting position, which will force release the pressure. Do this carefully, using an oven mitt or pot holder. The hot steam will quickly shoot straight from the vent into the air and you presumably dont want to burn yourself.

Once all of the steam has fully released from the pot, you can dump the water out and get cookin!

Use The Manual/regular/normal/automatic Release Methods For Special Cooking Purposes

Instant Pot French Dip

This release technique involves the fast release of vapor by removing or lifting the valve, turning a dial or pushing a button. It is ideal for interrupted cooking that involves adding food that cooks quicker than food already in the cooker. For example, meat needs a longer cooking time than vegetables therefore, when cooking stews, the vegetables would be added later.

With these tips in mind, you can go ahead and safely use the pressure cooker to shorten the cooking time of your favorite meals.

A Few Helpful Tips For This Method Of Proofing Bread Dough

Add a splash of oil. To prevent the dough from sticking to the sides of the Instant Pot, make sure to add a tablespoon or so of oil to the pot before adding your dough. This grease layer will help to create a barrier as the dough begins to expand and rise.

Use parchment paper to avoid sticking. If youre still concerned about sticking, adding a layer of parchment paper first and then greasing it with oil can also do the trick. This will also make removing the dough from the inside of the Instant Pot much easier.

Read the recipe first to see how many stages of proofing are needed. Depending on the recipe youre following, the Instant Pot bread dough will need to rise once, twice, or more times than that. Typically, most dough recipes using yeast will require at least two rises that can take several hours each. However, by using your Instant Pot, you can cut down an overnight proofing session by more than half by dialing up the temperature. Generally, dough that would take two hours to proof at room temperature would rise in only about one hour in an Instant Pot set at 90°F.

When proofing in two rounds, the first proof creates air pockets, as the dough expands to about twice its size. Then, once the dough has been shaped, the second proof yields smaller air pockets and a thicker crust to create a crunchy outside and soft interior once baked.

I Am Pressure Cooking But Steam Is Leaking Out

Is steam leaking out of the pressure valve, even when turned to the upper locked position? Its normal for a small amount of steam to leak from the valve while the pot is heating up, but if it continues to leak steam during the pressure cooking cycle, you may have a problem. This could be a sign that you need to clean out and reposition the valve. If this doesnt work, you may even need to replace the valve.

If steam is seeping out the sides, make sure the lid is properly locked for pressure cooking. If the lid seems to be fine, examine your sealing ring. A stretched or cracked ring should be replaced. If the ring has become dislodged, you can usually put it back into place without trouble. A loose ring can firm up if you put it in the freezer for a little while, but this will ultimately hasten the silicone decay, so you should plan on getting a new ring either way.

Tips For Releasing Your Instant Pot’s Pressure

  • The Instant Pot has a lid that locks automatically when pressure is built up inside, so you can’t open it by accident. This avoids any unfortunate mishaps, making the pressure cooker especially safe. Once the pressure has released, the lid will automatically unlock.
  • Repeated steam exposure to your kitchen cabinets can strip away paint or warp wood. When releasing steam, be sure to position the valve away from your cabinets.
  • Some recipes call for a natural release for a few minutes followed by a quick release. This is often to allow a dish to cool slightly before releasing the pressure so that it doesn’t splatter hot liquid from the valve.
  • Instant Pot recipes vary widely on how they calculate cook times. Some include pressure release time in their estimates, others include both pressure build and release, while others don’t include either. Factor this in when estimating how long a recipe will take.
  • “Some Instant Pot models take longer to come down from pressure than others,” says Bir. For example, the Ultra is known for an extra long natural release.
  • If you’ve waited half an hour for the pressure to release, chances are you can safely perform a quick release to let any remaining steam escape without greatly impacting the dish.
  • Inspect your release valve periodically to make sure it isn’t clogged. It’s a good idea to clean it every few weeks to make sure it works properly.

The Pot Is Showing A Burn Message

Instant Pot Session 6: How to do a Quick Release

This usually happens when the sensors think the pot in danger of burning your food . Often, this means that theres not enough liquid in the pot, or that the liquid hasnt reached all the bottom corners of the pot, which is easy to fix. You may also need to let your pot cool down if youve been sautéing on high heat for a while. For more complex meals, layer your starches and sauces on top of other ingredients to create a barrier between them and the bottom heater. Also, elevating meats using the cooking rack can help. Finally, if you have sautéed a liquid sauce or similar ingredient, make sure no bits are stuck to the pot before you move on to the next task.

Problem : The Lid Won’t Shut

No matter how much you fight it, the darn lid just won’t close.

The fix: Check the float valve , that small metal button near the release valve. If it’s up, push it down. The button has to be down for the lid to open or close.

If that doesn’t work, check that the seal in the right spot. It should be tucked in close to the edge of the lid.
