My family loves having oatmeal for breakfast. Making it in the Instant Pot is our favorite way! You get the perfect consistency every time, and its completely hands-off. There really isnt an easier way to make oatmeal.
This vegan and gluten-free breakfast can be flavored in so many yummy ways. You can add berries, nuts, peanut butter, dried fruit, or whatever else you like to pair with oatmeal. The possibilities are endless! And this steel cut oatmeal is the tasty foundation of them all.
Oats To Water Ratio For Instant Pot
My secret to perfectly creamy steel cut oats in the Instant Pot is to actually use a mixture of water and non-dairy milk. The ratio you’ll want for oats to water is 1:2. So for every 1 cup of oats, you use 2 cups of water.
But since we’re using almond milk as well, here’s what I do:
- 2 cups steel cut oats
- 3 cups water
- 1 cup almond milk
Once you add your liquid, turn your Instant Pot to high pressure, set to 4 minutes and let it build up the pressure! Allow the pressure to release naturally for about 10 minutes, then release the rest and remove the lid. Give it a quick stir and serve it up!

One of the things that you need to know about making oatmeal in the Instant Pot is that the oatmeal turns out best when you use almond milk rather than dairy milk in your recipe because almond milk wont scorch.

Confession time! I really disliked oatmeal for the longest time! It is because, Ive had so much of it as a kid, that I really couldnt care much for it despite the numerous health benefits.
Ive never really tried cooking with steel cut oats until I got the Instant Pot. And the first time, I tried making some in the IP, I was amazed at how good it was. A bowl of that oatmeal kept me full until lunch. I didnt need to munch on anything in between.
Since then, I try to enjoy the nutritious benefits of this Instant Pot steel cut oatmeal by including it at least three times a week in our breakfast routine. Besides, it is easy to vary the flavors, and you can really get creative with the toppings
What Oats Can You Cook In The Instant Pot
When you’re looking to cook oats in your instant pot, the first thing you need to keep in mind is the type of oats you’re using. Turns out you can’t cook all types of oats in the instant pot.

Difference Between Steel Cut Oats And Rolled Oats
Oat groats look similar to wheat seeds but are larger in size. Steel-cut oats, also known as Irish oats or pinhead, are processed by breaking the oat groats into 3-4 pieces with sharp steel blades.
Rolled oats, also known as old-fashioned oats need more processing. They are made by steaming, rolling and toasting the oat groats, which creates that flat flaked look, and therefore cook faster because of the flat surface area.
How To Cook In The Instant Pot
This is one of the easiest oatmeal recipes youll ever make. Seriously.
Add the oats to the Instant Pot and pour in the water. Give it a little stir. You can use half water and half milk or almond milk, if you wish but I prefer to use all water and flavor the oatmeal after its done cooking.;
If youre making a big batch for easy weekday breakfasts, youll need to add a little liquid when reheat it since the oats absorb the moisture. Thats when I like to add a bit of milk, cream, coconut milk or almond milk.
Once youve added your liquid, lock the lid and place the valve to sealed. Cook the oats on high pressure and allow the pressure to release naturally when done cooking.;

Steel Cut Oats Vs Rolled Oats: Whats The Difference
Steel cut and old fashioned rolled oats are the same whole grain cereal oat, and carry the same nutritional values, theyre just processed differently. They are both:
- High in soluble fiber to keep you full and keep things moving
- Naturally gluten free
- Nutrient dense and a top-10 superfood
- High in beta glucan for lowering cholesterol
Here are the differences:
Rolled oats are oat kernels that are steamed and then rolled into akes, then toasted, creating a flatter surface area so they cook quicker.
Steel cut oats are less processed by steel blades, making them chunkier and take 3-4 times as long to cook as old fashioned oats.
Unless you make them in the pressure cooker that is. Then theres only about 1 minute difference in cooking time!
Are Steel Cut Oats Healthy
Yes! Steel cut oats are a great source of whole grains providing fiber, iron, B vitamins, and have a low glycemic index.

What You Need For Instant Pot Steel Cut Oats
Steel Cut Oats make sure youre using regular steel cut oats and not quick-cooking steel cut or regular rolled oats
Liquid you can use any kind of liquid including non-dairy milk, dairy milk or even water
Cinnamon you can omit if you dont like cinnamon but I find it balances out the flavor nicely.
Vanilla extract for a hint of vanilla sweetness
Peaches feel free to replace with any kind of fruit
Maple syrup honey or other sweetener works well too.
Optional: 1/4-1/2 cup coconut cream for a peaches and cream style oatmeal

How To Make Steel Cut Oats In A Pressure Cooker
The process of making these healthy pressure cooker steel cut oats is 100% foolproof! The pressure cooker steel cut oats instructions have 3 parts:
First, preheat your pressure cooker by selecting Saute. Add in the coconut oil and once fully melted, add in the steel cut oats and saute for 30 seconds, while constantly stirring, until they are fully coated with the oil.
Here I have to mention, the addition of coconut oil is optional. I like it because a tablespoon of oil nicely coats the bottom of the pot and prevents it from sticking and it gives the oatmeal a sweet coconut-y flavor. However, if you are trying to avoid using oil, you can totally skip this step and simply place everything in the pot.
Second, stir in the water, a pinch of salt, and select Cancel. Secure the lid and turn your valve to Seal. Select Manual and cook on HIGH pressure for 10 minutes. It should take about 5-7 minutes to come to full pressure.
Finally, once the cooking is complete, let the pressure cooker naturally release for 10 minutes and then quick release until there is no more steam. Remove the lid carefully, as it may be hot, and give it a stir. Portion into large bowls, top with desired toppings, and enjoy!
Are Steel Cut Oats Healthier Than Other Oats
Yes and No.
Though Steel Cut Oats are the least processed, the differences in nutrition are very minor.
- For example, Steel Cut Oats is a;bit lower in calories than Rolled Oats, but equal in protein, identical carbohydrate count, similar fiber, hardly any sugar .

The key difference is Steel Cut Oats is;lower on Glycemic Index than other oats varieties.

What Is Steel Cut Oats
All oats come from oat groats the whole, unbroken grains. Theyre then;processed into different varieties of oats.
Steel Cut Oats, aka Irish Oats or Coarse Oatmeal, is a type of oats with the least amount of processing compared to Rolled Oats and Instant Oats. Theyre;just coarsely chopped 2 or 3 times, and neither steamed nor rolled.

How To Make Steel Cut Oatmeal In The Instant Pot
1. Choose your liquid. I always use water to make these oats. I find that they are creamy and perfect when I cook the oats in water and then add a splash of almond milk to my bowl.
If you choose to cook your oats in milk I recommend using half milk and half water.
2. Water to oats ratio. Use 3 cups of liquid for 1 cup of steel cut oats. You can double this recipe in a 6 quart Instant Pot.
3. Add some vanilla. This is my secret trick for oats with the best flavor! I also add vanilla to my favorite overnight oats recipe, and it is just the best!
4. Pressure cook 4 minutes. Close the Instant Pot lid and turn the steam release valve to the sealing position. Pressure cook on high pressure/manual for 4 minutes.
5. Natural pressure release. If you thought the 4 minute cook time that I just gave is too good to be true, here is where your oats will do most of their softening: the natural pressure release. After the cook time ends, leave the oats undisturbed in the Instant Pot, with the lid on, for about 20 minutes. You can get away with a 15 minute natural release, and if you forget and leave the oats for an hour or two thats ok too.
During the natural release time, the oats will soften and absorb most of the cooking liquid. The pressure will dissipate in the Instant Pot. When you are ready to open the lid, turn the steam release valve to the venting position just to make sure that all of the pressure and steam has escaped.
