What Is A Natural Pressure Release

Instant Pot Natural Pressure Release vs. Quick Release- What Does It Mean?

This is where you just let the Instant Pot be, you dont need to do anything. The Instant Pot will begin to cool down and release pressure all on its own. Upon the completion of the cooking cycle you will hear the Instant Pot “beep” to signal it has completed the cooking cycle and it will automatically begin the Natural Pressure Release process.

You will know the Natural Pressure Release process is complete when you see/hear the float valve drop down. Depending on what you are cooking this could be as short as a couple of minutes or up to 30 minutes. Generally the shorter the cooking time the shorter the Natural Release time.

When to use Natural Pressure Release

A Natural Pressure Release means pressure within the Instant Pot is released in a very gradual manner so its perfect for foods that are primarily liquid or foamy foods . Releasing pressure slowly means the food stays in the Instant Pot and just the steam is sent out of the Steam Release Valve. Releasing the pressure too quickly when cooking liquids or foamy foods would result in the food and steam being sent through the steam release vent which = big giant mess in your kitchen!

While the Instant Pot is Naturally Releasing Pressure it is still cooking which also makes doing a Natural Release a great option for foods like roasts. Think of it like letting a larger cut of meat rest after cooking.

Natural Release & Quick Release

NPR stands for natural pressure release and is one method you can use to release the pressure from your instant pot. It is best to use this option if you want to keep your kitchen clean. This is because the pressure from the pot is released slowly and gradually, ensuring that there is only a little movement of the pot itself. It is highly likely that your food stays intact with this method and it comes out clean.

How To Do A Quick Pressure Release

1. Wait for the cooking cycle to finish. Your pressure cooker should beep.

2. Carefully turn the venting knob from the Sealing to the Venting position. This expels the pressure inside the inner pot.

3. Wait for the metal pin to completely drop before you open the lid.

4. The rest of the pressure will be expelled when you remove the lid.

Q: What Is An Abbreviated Natural Pressure Release

The different types of pressure releases can also be combined. You dont have to wait for all the pressure to release to get the benefit of a natural pressure release.

In many of my recipes, I will let the pressure release naturally for a certain number of minutes, then I will finish with a quick pressure release.

I almost always only wait 10 minutes before I release the remaining pressure. Combining the two release options reduces waiting time yet gives you many of the benefits of a natural pressure release, such as reducing foam and tenderizing meats.

Q: What Is A Natural Pressure Release

A natural pressure release is when you leave the pressure release switch in the Sealed position when the cook time ends. This lets the pressure release slowly, without you doing anything. When the pressure is fully released, the float valve will drop and the lid will unlock and open.

A natural pressure release is a bit anticlimactic in comparison to a quick pressure release. There is no jet of steam when the natural pressure release starts. Theres also no clear way to tell when the pressure is fully released, and no beep or signal when the lid unlocks. Sometimes you can hear the float valve drop if youre close by.

The time it takes for the pressure to release naturally will vary depending on the ingredients and amount of liquid in the pressure cooker. A natural pressure release can take from 5 to 30 minutes in the electric pressure cooker.

Food inside the cooking pot will continue to cook as the pressure decreases.

Reality: When Do I Use Qpr For My Instant Pot Or Pressure Cooker

Here’s when you use Quick Pressure release:

  • When you are cooking delicate foods such as seafood or vegetables that will cook very quickly anyway. Allowing the pot to continue to cook the food will make mush out of your veggies and seafood.
  • When you are cooking in multiple cycles, as for this beef stew. So you will cook the meat once. Then, you will QPR and add vegetables and cook the meat a second time. Allowing the meat to NRP the first time will lead to–you guessed it–overcooked meat.
  • When you would like some of the water to evaporate. You need a certain amount of liquid in the pot for it to come to pressure. But meat and vegetables also release water. Sometimes you want a slightly drier dish. For these recipes, I use quick pressure release to get rid of some of the liquid as steam. I find this a lot better than having to sauté afterward, and also less likely to overcook food.

Instant Pot Terms Abbreviations And Jargon To Know

Not all abbreviations, cooking functions, or terms are applicable to every instant pot. For instance the 6-in-1 LUX does not have a yogurt function nor does it have the option to set high and low pressure.

IP Instant Pot

HP High Pressure

LP Low Pressure

QR Quick Release This means you are releasing the pressure by turning the pressure valve to the open position immediately after food is finished cooking.

There will be hot steam coming out of the top, so make sure your hand isnt covering the opening and that you dont scare yourself!

NPR Natural Pressure Release This allows the pressure to come down on its own without releasing the valve and takes a little bit of time. It will also vary based on if you have a 6 quart or 8 quart pressure cooker.

PIP Pot in Pot This means using another container inside of your Instant Pot. Since the Instant Pot does not get as hot during pressure cooking as ovens while baking, you can use any oven-proof container such as glass, stainless steel, or silicone cups.

Sealing Ring The silicone ring that sits inside the lid. This is what seals the pot, if it is not properly installed and in place, your food will not cook properly.

Pressure Valve The black valve on the top of the lid that seals or releases pressure. There are to settings for it sealing and venting.

How To Natural Pressure Release

How to NATURAL RELEASE (NR or NPR) Instant Pot | Full guide

It is effortless to get NPR working in your favor. Let the pot sit. As the Ninja Foodi rests, it will cool and slowly release the pressure on the seals. So all you need to do is wait.

Many people ask, how long should I wait? And like many things, this depends. If there is more water or food mass inside the pot, it will hold the heat and keep the seal longer. So you will need to wait longer. Later I will do a full breakdown of NPR and testing to compare the cooking with QPR and NPR. When I do so, I will produce charts that will help you determine how long you should have to wait based on what you are cooking.

When you can lightly twist the lid with your hand, the NPR is done if it easily moves. However, if there is resistance, the NPR is likely not finished, and you should wait a little longer. If you are worried about the steam giving your arm a burn , you can jiggle the pressure release valve using a wooden spoon to see if there is still steam pressure. Remember, you only want to check for pressure, so you should not lock it into position, only jiggle it.

If no steam escapes, the NPR process is likely done, and you should apply a light twist on the lid. Again if it spins easily and steam or liquid is not shooting out of the cooker, the NPR is done, and you can open the Ninja Foodi.

Your Biggest Instant Pot Questions Answered

Heres how to do it:

How To Cook Rice In Instant Pot

The ratio that you use for cooking rice on the stove-top will be different from the one in IP.

Account for the steam turning into condensation, which has no way of evaporating, so it will add to the rice. I have seen that, generally, 1:1+ 2 Tablespoon ratio works for me for white rice and brown rice, as well as quinoa.

But again, how you like your rice will also determine the ratio.

If you like your rice more firm and al dente, reduce the cook time by 1 minute or so.

If you like it more soft and sticky, increase the water by 2 tablespoons to ¼ cup.

For me, white Basmati or Jasmine rice takes 6 minutes, NPR. For Brown Basmati or Jasmine, it takes 22 minutes, NPR.

What Is Quick Release

Quick pressure release is a way to let all the pressure in the Instant Pot escape as fast as possible. To release pressure quickly, move the valve from sealing to venting and allow the pot to release steam and pressure. Ensure that the pot is not directly under cabinets that may get damaged by steam, and be sure to keep hands and face away from the steam.

How long does the Instant Pot take to Naturally Release?

The time it will take to release all the pressure depends on the ingredients and the amount of liquid in the pressure cooker. For a very full pot it can take up to 30 minutes to release all the pressure. For a less full pot with little liquid it can be as quick as 5 minutes. For roasts youll definitely want to use a natural pressure release. Give yourself enough time to let the pot release the pressure naturally or else youll end up with a door stop of a roast instead of meat that is fork tender.

How long does the Instant Pot take to Quick Release?

Most of the time quick release is, well, fairly quick. But again it depends on how full the pot is and how much liquid is inside. If there is a lot of liquid it can take up to 5 minutes of steam escaping before its all released. Most of the time when I perform a quick release I try to see how many drawers I can organize or how many cupboards I can wipe down before the pressure is all released. This way it doesnt drive me crazy that its taking so long.

Can Recipes Be Doubled

How to Use an Instant Pot {With Video}

In most cases, yes, depending on the size of the appliance. The common sizes are 3qt, 6qt, and 8qt. The 6qt is size, by far, the most commonly owned. When doubling a recipe it is often very important to NOT stack meats on top of each other. For meat recipes, the amount of liquid and cooking time will usually remain the same. Refer to the specific recipe for details.

Hybrid Or Shortened Pressure Release

I tend to use this a lot. I usually allow the pot to rest undisturbed for 10 minutes. Then I release all remaining pressure. You will see this method used most often in my pressure cooker recipes.

Many of my recipes ask you to NPR for 10 minutes and then release all remaining pressure. So you leave the pot alone for 10 minutes, and then you turn the valve from sealing to venting and allow the rest of the pressure to be released quickly.

Which Model Of Instant Pot Should I Get

As Instant Pot is a brand, there are a couple types of Instant Pots that are under the brand name. This includes the LUX, DUO, ULTRA, SMART, and GEM. As someone who has a limited amount of counter space, I find owning the Instant Pot to be very useful as it covers a few different kitchen appliances.

Q: Do I Need To Turn The Pressure Cooker Off Before Using A Quick Pressure Release Or A Natural Pressure Release

No you do not need to turn the pressure cooker off for a quick or natural pressure release. The pressure will release on the Keep Warm setting. The benefit of not turning it off is that the time will count up so you can see how long its been since the pressure cooking time ended.

There is some debate about whether or not the pressure releases more slowly if its on the Keep Warm Setting. The Instant Pot Companys official position is that it does not release more slowly on the Keep Warm Setting because the Keep Warm heat does not turn on until the pressure has been released.

I prefer to turn off or unplug the pressure cooker before I do a quick pressure release or natural pressure release. I seem to always forget to turn off the pressure cooker if I dont turn it off when the pressure cooking ends. I also prefer to set a timer to remind me 10 minutes has passed and its time to release the pressure when Im doing a natural pressure release.

What About The Quick Release

How to do a Quick Release on the Instant Pot and WHEN NEVER TO DO IT!!!

On the other hand, the Quick Release Pressure is more commonly known as the QPR. This is the process of letting all the pressure from the pot to escape quickly. To do this, simply move the valve to the venting from the sealing. This way, you will release both pressure and steam.

When doing this, make sure that theres no cabinet above the cooker or anything that will get hit directly by the steam. Also, keep your face and hands away for your safety.

I’m thinking of getting an Instant Pot but is there a way to set it to automatically turn off when it reaches the time you set? Because if ‘keep warm’ mode is the default and I need to manually turn it off after it reaches the set time then that requires me to check in on it in the middle of cooking, and I’m looking for something that lets me set and forget until it’s really done.

A 6-quart Instant Pots capacity is 24 cups and two-thirds of that are 16 cups. There should not be more than 16 cups cooked rice in the Instant Pot and since 1 cup raw makes 3 cups cooked we have to divide the 16 by 3. That makes 5.3 cups. The calculation is only theory though.

From fresh: Seal the Instant Pot lid and manually set to cook on high pressure for 8 minutes per 1 lb. Once the timer goes off, let the pot NPR for around 15 minutes before performing a QR .29 2019 .

Using the Instant Pot chicken method of 6 minutes per pound with a 10 minute NPR.. So an 8lb turkey is 48 Minutes Cooking + 10 Minutes NPR. The turkey falls off the bone, I simply pushed the skin away and carved the meat onto a platter for everyone to eat.

3-Minute Cook Time: Close the Instant Pot and set the pressure release valve to ‘Sealing’ and then set the pot to cook on ‘Manual’ / ‘Pressure Cook’, ‘High Pressure’ for 3 minutes. 10-Minute NPR: Once the cook time has completed, allow for a 10 minute NPR .
