Its Official: : 1 Ratio Of Water Makes Perfect Rice

How to make Long Grain White Rice in your Instant Pot

Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. Nobody complains about mushy rice anymore, although some do find that the 1:1 method produced rice that is too al dente for their preferences; these people found that simple adding a bit more water fixed that.

So the next time you make rice in your Instant Pot, consider the 1:1 ratio of rice to water for your starting point. If its not quite right, try adding a little more water until you find the sweet spot that makes your perfect rice, every time.

Brown Rice In The Instant Pot Some Special Considerations

Most of the instructions for Instant Pot brown rice will be the same as white rice, except that cook time doubles, and you may need to fiddle with your water ratio as well.

Most brown rice calls for 45 minutes of cook time on the stovetop, and the Instant Pot can pretty much cut that in half. Somewhere from 20 to 28 minutes will be the sweet spot, depending on if you have short- or long-grain brown rice. I am generally able to get mine done at 22 minutes on low pressure.

Pro Tip: wherever you store your rice, leave a note for yourself about the water ratio and the number of minutes.

For example, we buy rice in huge, Costco-sized bags and pour each variety into a different glass jar in our kitchen. On the outside of that glass jar, it says, 1 cup rice, 1 1/4 cups water, 20 minutes IP. That way, I never have to look anything up.

How To Make Instant Pot Yellow Rice With The Pot In Pot Method

If you prefer, you can make the rice using the pot in pot method instead of cooking it directly in the insert pot.

In the pot in pot method, you combine the yellow rice and liquid in a small baking dish or pan that fits down into the insert pot of your Instant Pot.

This method can be ideal if youre cooking a smaller amount, or if you dont want to have to clean the insert pot, or if you are cooking more than one thing in the Instant Pot at the same time .

You can check out my full list of recommended Instant Pot accessories for pot in pot cooking, but for pot-in-pot yellow rice, youll simply need a heatproof container that is small enough to fit into your Instant Pot but will also hold the amount of rice youre cooking .

I generally use this bundt pan and cook one cup of dry rice at a time.

Youll simply place the trivet into the insert pot of your Instant Pot, then pour a cup of water into the insert pot.

In your heatproof dish, combine the yellow rice and liquid according to the same ratio as if you were making it directly in the insert pot. Youll also use the same cook time and pressure release described above.

Once the pressure has released, carefully lift out the dish and fluff the rice!

Why The Instant Pot Is Best For Fluffy Rice:

  • Consistent:; Cooking rice on the stove top can vary so much that its hard to get consistent results every time. Depending on how your lid fits, the size of the pot and your heating element you make never get the same result twice.
  • Steady Results: The instant pot is consistent because there is no water lost through evaporation. The heat source is always consistent and the time and setting is the time every time.
  • Natural release: When the rice is done cooking, leave the rice undisturbed and the pressure will naturally begin to release. After about 15 minutes you can manually release the remaining pressure before opening it.
