How to make white rice in the Instant Pot

A rice cooker is an essential;appliance at Japanese household. How To Cook Black Rice In The Instant Pot

Have you heard of black rice? Its healthier than all other rice because rather than being a grain, its actually a seed. Plus, its packed with antioxidants, just like blueberries.

It looks pretty crazy, but it tastes delicious.

We default to black rice most of the time unless we have guests who might be scared away. Most of my brands of black rice call for a 2 to 1 ratio of water.

We started cooking black rice in the Instant Pot with 2 cups water, 1 cup rice, and 20 minutes under low pressure. Weve had success with that method, but have been working our water level down.

I feel pretty confident that you could use 1 1/2 cups water and 1 cup rice and 20 to 25 minutes under low pressure and have it come out just great.

Where To Buy An Instant Pot

This is the 6-quart Instant Pot I started out with. After a few years, we added an 8-quart partly because I knew I would use two at the same time often enough, partly because it was the Prime Day sale, and also because I wanted more space for certain recipes. Both are a pretty basic model and you dont need more bells and whistles than that!;

If youre deciding on size, most people say its better to get a deal on the 6-quart and just have 2 rather than go big, BUT if your family has 5 or more people or you really like to batch cook or do more than a pound of beans, the 8-quart may be the best choice. Natural Pressure Release Vs Quick Pressure Release

Whats better? Hands down, no doubt >>natural pressure release. If you cook rice longer so you can do quick pressure release, with the hope to have the rice cooked faster overall, it gets sticky and mushy.

I encourage you to be patient and wait for natural pressure release. I timed all rice and there doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to the timing. Even the same kind of rice in the same amount has had different natural pressure release times.

Instant Pot White Rice

How to Cook Rice in Instant Pot (White or Brown Rice!) A ...

Growing up we always made our white rice in the rice cooker.

It was quick, easy, and was pretty much foolproof.

If youd asked me up until about a year ago Id say the rice cooker was the only way.

That is, until the magical powers of the Instant Pot were discovered.

Not only do the grains cook up until perfectly tender and ultra fluffy, but its also ready in a fraction of the time.

Im talking like HALF of the time it takes for a rice cooker or a stovetop method.

Instant Pot white rice in only 20 minutes while cooking it in a rice cooker takes closer to 40 minutes!

And the process is so simple to follow, you might even end up tossing that ole rice cooker away!

How To Cook Grains In The Instant Pot

Cooking all manner of grains in the Instant Pot is as easy as adding the grains and water to the pot, closing the lid, then selecting the time at high pressure based on the chart youll find at the end of this post.

Once the cooking program ends, let the grains rest for 10 minutes then release the pressure, open the pot, fluff with a fork, and enjoy!

The ratios of grain-to-water listed in the chart will work for any volume of grains you want to prepare just multiply or divide as necessary.

Here are a few rules of thumb to keep in mind:

Cook In High Pressure For 2 Minutes

After testing a few different variations, the best cooking time for short grain rice is 2 minutes on high pressure. Ive also tried using the Rice mode on the Instant Pot, which is set to 12 minutes on low pressure. As both manual and Rice mode takes 5 minutes to pressurize, Rice mode takes extra 10 minutes to cook.

Instant Pot Chicken Breasts And Rice

  • Preheat the Instant Pot and sauté garlic and onion in order to bring the instant pot to the right temperature before the high-pressure cooking process.
  • Do not use chicken breasts much larger than 6.5 oz . If your chicken breasts are bigger I recommend cutting them into 1 cubes to ensure they cook through.
  • The sealing knob has to be in the sealing position and the IP has to come to high pressurewithout any air or steam coming out;of the knob. If there is air or any noise coming out it means the sealing ring isnt positioned properly and needs to be adjusted.
  • After the 5 minutes high-pressure and 10 minutes natural pressure release the chicken is JUST cooked. It wont be dry but it shouldnt be pink at all, just white.
  • If your pin dropped before the 10 minutes the pot most likely didnt get to high pressure. After the 10 minutes natural pressure release there should still be quite a bit of pressure to be released.

    Can You Freeze Cooked Rice

Cooked rice can be stored in the freezer for up to two to three months. Be sure that the container you use has an airtight seal. I prefer glass containers because they can go straight into the microwave to reheat.

To thaw, you can leave the container in the refrigerator for 12 hours. If you need it sooner, you can thaw rice in the microwave. Again, add water to the bowl so it does not dry out the rice. Stir it every two minutes until it is warm usually rice takes 6-7 minutes of reheating time from frozen when you have stored it in individual portions.

Rice Usually Fails To Cook In A Few Ways:

    • Too watery: this means your rice is under-cooked.
    • Hard, chewy, or burnt: this means you didnt add enough water or its overcooked.
    • Too mushy and sticky: this means you added way too much water.

So, the water-to-rice ratios and the cooking times are the utmost important factors for making;perfectly cooked rice.;Every grain is different though.

How Much Rice Can You Cook In The Instant Pot

The most rice Ive ever cooked at one time is 3 cups of dry rice with 3 cups of water. I think you could probably go up to 5 cups of dry rice, as long as you dont fill the pot more than halfway full for safety.

Rice creates foamy, starchy water as it cooks, so you wouldnt want it to rise too high during the cooking cycle and damage your pot.

When doubling or tripling a recipe in the Instant Pot, the cooking time doesnt change. However, the overall time will be longer when you cook a larger quantity, because it will take longer for the pot to come to pressure when compared to a smaller quantity of rice.

    Can I Use Natural Release

You can use Natural Release where pressure subsides on its own. You can pre-program this recipe and dinner can wait for you on the counter when you get home. Since Instant Pot keeps cooking while releasing pressure slowly, consistency might be a bit more soft. Which is not a big deal. Its a hearty recipe anyways.

    Varying Cooking Times For Rice

The time it takes to cook rice depends on the variety of rice you want to use.

    • Jasmine rice will only take three minutes to cook. Jasmine is a short grain white rice, moist, soft and slightly sticky when cooked.
    • Long grain white rice will be cooked in five minutes in an Instant Pot. This rice is the most common and recognizable in western stores. It is mild and fluffy when cooked.;White basmati rice is a form of long grain white rice. The grains do not stick together like jasmine rice. Its nutty taste is popular in Indian and Asian recipes.
    • Long grain brown rice takes longer to cook, about 25 minutes. The layers of bran, which are nutritious, are left on the rice grain. This takes much longer to soften. Brown rice is a whole grain food with none of the vitamins and minerals stripped away. It has a chewy texture and the grains do not stick together.
    • Wild rice blend also takes 25 minutes to cook because it contains wild rice. Wild rice is not actually a rice, but rather a type of grass with a very tough texture. Its a great source of B vitamins.

    Want Fluffy Rice Rinse Well

    Instant Pot Rice

I dont always remember or have time to do this step, but it helps when I do: Rinse the rice in a wire mesh colander under cold water for 30 seconds or so, or until the water runs mostly clear.

Rinsing makes the rice fluffy, and seems to make more of a difference with white rice varieties verses brown; the latter is protected by its hull and doesnt tend to have a lot of extra starch clinging to the outside of the grains.

What If Rice Came Out Mushy Or Crunchy

How to make pot-in-pot rice in the Instant Pot–Instant Pot Tips

When it comes to rice cooked in a pressure cooker, its a little bit of trial and error method for everyone. Sometimes different varieties of brown rice cook differently. Also rice could be old. I always use long grain brown rice and buy one brand. Last time my husband bought different brand and it needed maybe 1 more minute cooking. Once you find your rice you will know how long it cooks and you can add extra minutes.

If your rice comes out crunchy: stir, close the lid and let it sit for 20 minutes. It will get there. Also, next time cook for 25 minutes and let pressure come down on its own. It could be the altitude or rice and beans brand. Unfortunately, you cant re-close the lid, cook for extra 2 minutes and say that your new cooking time. You have to try recipe from scratch again to find your rice cooking time.

If your rice comes out mushy: cook a few minutes less next time. Easy-peasy.
