Instant Pot: THESE Parts ARE Dishwasher Safe! #shorts

If a lingering sweet or savory smell remains on the sealing ring after the wash cycle, soak overnight in vinegar, then hand wash thoroughly.

It is a wise idea to have two sealing rings. Use one for savory dishes and the other for sweet dishes. It is recommended that you replace the sealing ring every six to twelve months, depending on how often you use the Instant Pot.

Is An Instant Pot Really Worth It

Pressure Cooker Review: Instant Pot 6

Theres no denying an Instant Pot is a great kitchen appliance but you may be wondering if its really worth it? Or will it simply end up as another kitchen gadget that languishes on your countertop gathering dust.

Its important to remember that while Instant Pots offer a multitude of cooking methods, many of which mean you no longer need to use an oven or a hob, they cant cook everything. For example, theyre not an option if you regularly prepare pasta, noodles or stir frys. And while some do come with lids that can air fry, we found making fries in an Instant Pot wasnt as good as using one of the best air fryers.

At the same time, you cant just pop the lid off and check the dish youre cooking, as you would when using the hob, the oven or a slow cooker. Youll need to release the pressure, effectively stopping cooking, and detach the lid. Then if the dish isnt ready, youll need to start cooking again.

Similarly, an Instant Pot can certainly shave a few hours off cooking stews, ribs and other dishes that usually take the best part of a day to cook, however with dishes like rice or steaming vegetables the time saving is minimal, which may mean an Instant Pot isnt worth the investment.

However, if youre looking to save space in your kitchen by replacing several gadgets with just one, or you are looking to broaden the repertoire of dishes you cook, without having to research and learn new cooking skills, an Instant Pot will more than prove useful.

How Do Instant Pots & Pressure Cookers Work

Instant Pots contain two main parts, the lid, and the main unit. Then there are other parts, such as the float valve, the sealing ring, the release hole, and the stainless steel insert.

The lid and the main unit are sealed shut once the ingredients have been added to the Instant Pot. Then, when the Instant Pot starts heating up, the liquid starts to heat up. When it comes to a boil it starts to produce steam.

Because the container is sealed shut, the steam has nowhere to escape this increase the pressure inside the vessel. The increased pressure increases the temperature at which water boils, this means that the water boiling inside the pressure cooker is boiling above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. If it wasnt for the increased pressure, the water would evaporate right away.

The increased pressure also forces the heat to penetrate the foods. This, in turn, causes anything inside the Instant Pot to cook much faster than it would otherwise.

Pressure cooking is very useful for those who live at high altitudes. You can read more about the benefits of high-altitude pressure cooking here.

If The Burn Error Comes On You Can Still Save Your Food

Seeing the dreaded “burn” error message on an Instant Pot’s screen can send even a seasoned pressure cooker master into conniptions. You might be afraid that your pot is filled with the charred remains of a perfectly good pot roast, but in all likelihood, you can salvage your food before it turns into charcoal. The Kitchn explains that the “burn” error appears when your Instant Pot senses that food has started to stick and burn to the bottom of the pot. This usually happens either because you’re trying to cook with too little liquid or because your liquid is too thick.

To fix a “burn” error, first hit “cancel” so the Instant Pot stops cooking. Then, vent the pressure so you can open the lid and access the food. Oftentimes, the error message comes on before anything burns too badly. Stir your food around and add at least a half cup of water or stock, and you should be safe to reattach the lid and continue cooking. If food has stuck to the bottom of the pan, use something sturdy to scrape the crust off so it doesn’t trip the sensor again.

How To Remove Stains From Your Instant Pot

How I Clean my Instant Pot Rim

Not all stubborn stains can be washed away in the dishwasher sometimes, more extreme measures are called for, especially if the Instant Pot has been left standing for a while without being washed.

  • Stuck-on-food Warm soapy water is recommended to remove stubborn stains and food particles. Leave to soak if necessary but do not use steel wool or abrasive cleaners as these will damage the stainless-steel surface. If soaking does not work, use a soft, damp sponge to work away the grime.
  • Water stains and discoloration on the bottom of the inner pot can easily be removed with a vinegar solution. Pour 1 full cup of white vinegar into the stainless-steel bowl and leave for 5 minutes before pouring out rinse with clean water. If the stain is particularly stubborn, soak a sponge in vinegar and scrub lightly. Wash with clean soapy water and dry thoroughly.

Vintage China Delicate Crystal And Repaired Items

The Spruce / Meg MacDonald

For any glass or china heirlooms, skip the dishwasher and carefully hand wash. This is especially important for any item that has been repaired. The high heat and harsh detergents will cause the adhesives used to weaken and you may lose any small pieces.

Delicate crystal should be hand washed to prevent chipping. If you decide to use the dishwasher, use the top rack and place the glasses between the tines, not over them, to help avoid breakage. Remember, some lead crystal will become cloudy and pitted after being etched by the harsh detergents.

Clean The Exterior Cooker Base While The Inner Pot Is Removed

The appliance base contains heating and electric components, so it should never be completely immersed in water or washed in the dishwasher. Wipe down the exterior of the cooker base with a damp cloth to remove dirt and food splatter.

The outer pot handles might need extra attention as they are used more often. Use a clean, slightly damp cleaning cloth to wipe down the cooker bases interior gently and dry immediately.

For wiping away extra stubborn marks, use a dab of white vinegar on a damp cloth, followed by a wet paper towel.

The recessed area along the lip of the base can be gently scrubbed with a small scrubbing brush, or even a toothbrush, to remove any food particles.

Pay extra attention to the lip as small food particles collect under the lip and can become a problem area for bacteria if not cleaned correctly.

If you’ve ever put a shiny disposable aluminum pie plate in the dishwasher, you’ve seen what happens. It turns dull and darkens.

The same thing can happen to your aluminum pots, pans, and baking sheets. If the aluminum has not been anodized, the harsh detergent can cause pitting and corrosion. You may also see white spots on the surface from the alkalinity of the dishwasher detergent. Even if the pan is labeled as “dishwasher safe,” it’s better to hand wash.

If you want to remove the discoloration and spots, make a paste of cream of tartar and warm water. Spread the paste over the pot and use some elbow greaseand remember to hand wash next time!

You Need To Replace The Sealing Ring On Your Instant Pot Regularly

The sealing ring is key to ensuring that your Instant Pot works the way it should. Miss Vickie writes that the sealing ring prevents pressure and liquid from escaping the cooking vessel and causing messes or even explosions. The sealing ring on an Instant Pot is made from silicone, which is ideally suited to the purpose because its heat resistant and flexible. Silicones pliability means that the sealing ring is less durable than the rest of the Instant Pot, which is made out of sturdy hard plastic and stainless steel. You want to avoid having a sealing ring fail on you in the middle of cooking, so its a good idea to replace it periodically.

The Food Network recommends that you buy a new sealing ring every year or so, replacing it more frequently if youre a heavy Instant Pot user. Given how crucial the ring is to your pressure cookers functioning, its a good idea to keep an extra ring stashed away somewhere in case of disaster.

Plus, if youre dealing with stuck-on food, you might end up needing to wash it by hand first anyway. At that point, you might as well finish cleaning it by hand as well and bypass the dishwasher.

But, if you have a small crock pot and give it a good rinse before food has a chance to dry on it, its easier to pop it in the dishwasher. In this scenario, using the dishwasher to clean your crock pot can save you a lot of effort and time.
