How To Make Instant Pot Cold Start Yogurt
The cold start method simply uses ultra filtered milk and a couple tablespoons of plain yogurt . No boil yogurt can only be done with ultra filtered milk, such as Fairlife brand.
The other bonus of cold start yogurt is no straining! After the yogurt cooks for 8-10 hours, it is so thick a spoon can stand straight up in it!
Although most organic milk brands are labeled ultra pasteurized, the results dont match up to Fairlife ultra filtered milk. This means Fairlife has more protein and less sugar.
Therefore, after the incubation time, Fairlife cold start yogurt will be very thick, and theres no need to strain.
Ultra pasteurized milk brands will result in thin and watery cold start yogurt. Although the yogurt may still be strained, you wont be left with much yogurt after the whey drains out.
How To Make Vegan Yogurt In The Instant Pot
There’s barely a recipe here, but the instructions are important to follow along carefully, so please do so for the best results.
You will begin the process by soaking 2 cups of raw cashews or cashew pieces with 2 cups of filtered water for at least 30 minutes. I don’t care how high-powered your blender is, soaking the cashews makes a really smooth yogurt, so do it. Do not drain the water.
Next put all of it in the blender and blitz into a really smooth, silky cream. Remove the cream to an oven-safe bowl that will fit inside the Instant Pot liner. I use a glass Pyrex bowl.
Warm the yogurt in the microwave for 30 seconds. Stir, then warm for 30 more seconds. The yogurt will be slightly lukewarm, which will create a nice, cozy atmosphere for the bacteria to start growing.
Stir in the powder from two probiotic capsules . I always use the PB8 vegetarian brand, which I buy online. It works great.
You can also use a yogurt as your starter. Any vegan or non-vegan yogurt will do, but it has to have active live cultures so make sure you read the info on the container. A homemade probiotic yogurt is great too. Stir in the yogurt starter into the cashew cream instead of the probiotic capsule powder.
Once the powder or starter has been stirred into the yogurt, place it inside the steel liner of the Instant Pot. Click the lid on, and press the “yogurt” function. Set the time to 12 hours for a tangier yogurt, or 10 hours for a less tangy version. I usually do 12 hours.
What Others Are Saying
Anne Trevoc says:
Was excited but a little nervous about trying vegan yogurt in my MultiPot. After 10 hours there was a nice tang and taste to it and it’s setting up in my fridge quite nicely. The trickiest part for making this was finding probiotic powder, but amazon saved the day. I read that you can also just use capsules that you empty out. Overall a solid recipe and a great vegan alternative to dairy yogurt. I will definitely make this again.
Leah M says:
I made two batches. The second time I let it ferment for twice as long, about 18 hours. What I found is that the flavor is more “tart” and yogurt-like when you let it ferment longer. It also had a little bit of a grainy texture, but after some research I learned that the grainy texture is characteristic of coconut milk. If you want a sweeter tasting yogurt, I would also add more sweetener. I will definitely make it again, with minor adjustments. It’s the best way to make vegan yogurt at home.
Erin Hudson says:
This was a pretty good breakfast dish. Not a big fan of coconut milk but I added in some fresh peaches and granola to make it a little more filling.

What Is A Yogurt Starter
Why does this recipe for yogurt call for yogurt? Because yogurt has bacteria in it or active cultures you need them to incubated to make yogurt. Not to worry its a good bacteria that eats lactose turning it into lactic acid. This gives yogurt its tangy flavor and helps control the consistency of yogurt. Now what can you use as a starter for your yogurt? The answer is simple. Any yogurt from the grocery store that says active cultures on the label.;
Once you make yogurt you can save 2 tbsp of your yogurt as a starter. Its called an heirloom starter and you can freeze it for 30 days.;

Yes. If you have the Lux Instant Pot or another electric pressure cooker, it can still be done! Heres how:
But What About The Jar Method:
I have seen recipes floating around the internet that recommend you pour a can of coconut milk into a sanitized jar and mix it up with 2 non-dairy probiotic capsules and leave it for a day or two at room temperature.;
Theoretically, this method could work if you keep your home very warm. BUT, Ive tried this method twice and both times it did not work. The first time, the probiotics simply did not grow and the second time, the mixture became rancid .
I see three potential issues with this method. First, the potential for contamination, Second, probiotics need food in order to grow, and that food is sugar , and Third, the lack of temperature control yields high potential for failure .
Im not telling you not to try this method, but based on my experience, it does not work. Regardless, I find the pressure cooker method to be easy, consistent, and goof-proof.;

Easy Instant Pot Yogurt Recipe
This homemade Instant Pot yogurt recipe has been a complete GAME CHANGER for me. Yogurt used to be just a vehicle for toppings, such fresh fruit, homemade chocolate granola, orange spiced granola, or blueberry maple syrup.
Then I finally entered the world of Instant Potand completely ignored that yogurt button on it.Evidently Instant Pot doesnt know you can buy store bought yogurt already made.
But I got to thinkingI spend a lot of money on fancy organic yogurt every week. Even with the organic label, some of it still has a lot of added sugars and unfamiliar ingredients.
So I asked my au naturale sister about it because if she finds the time to make homemade marshmallows, kombucha, and hydrosol spray, Im sure shes tried her hand at homemade yogurt.
I was right. But she was also right about how simple it is.
Not only is Instant Pot yogurt ridiculously easy, way more economical than buying yogurt, but its;hands down THE BEST YOGURT YOULL EVER TASTE.
I know what youre thinkingHow Can You Be That Gaga Over The Taste of Instant Pot Yogurt?
Because it doesnt even taste like yogurt! Its INFINITELY more creamy, less pungent, and insanely smooth tasting. Its like eating a bowl of whipped cream without the empty promises of starting a juice cleanse after.;
How To Make Instant Pot Yogurt
- STEP ONE: Pour cold milk in Instant Pot. You can use whole, 2%, or skim.
- STEP TWO: Press yogurt button until boil shows on screen. After about 30 minutes it will start to be and the screen will switch to YOGT. After boiling is completely I usually double check the temperature with a thermometer. If it hasnt reached 180ºF yet, turn on SAUTE to heat and stir milk until it reaches the correct temperature.
- STEP THREE: Now its time to bring the yogurt from 180ºF down to 110-115ºF . You can simply remove the Instant Pot insert and let it sit on the counter for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally . Alternatively, place the insert into a bowl of ice water, stirring for about 5 minutes, or until temperature reaches 110-115ºF .
- STEP FOUR: Add the yogurt starter
- STEP FIVE: Whisk to combine milk with yogurt starter.
- STEP SIX: Press yogurt button until timer reads 08:00 . Youll know when its done because it will be thick and gelatinous. If it isnt, process for another 1-3 hours.
- STEP SEVEN: When yogurt is done fermenting pour into a strainer lined with a cheesecloth. Make sure there is a bowl underneath to catch the whey. Put in the fridge and strain for 2-3 hours for standard yogurt or 4-5 hours for greek yogurt.

Why Coconut Milk Yogurt And Why In The Instant Pot
Buying a dairy-free yogurt in the stores usually means choosing one that is heavy on the sugar or is flavored and sometimes wed just like a plain dairy-free, lower-carb yogurt that isnt going to feel like weve eaten a candy bar. We loved the idea of doing it in the Instant Pot because it means we dont need to buy a separate gadget to incubate the yogurt . Of course, we are talking about an Instant Pot that has a yogurt function button. However if you do have a dedicated yogurt maker, you can certainly use it with this recipe as we opt to heat the milk on the stove because we didnt like that heating it in the Instant Pot left the milk stuck to inner pot and in turn left the resulting yogurt chunky. If you prefer to skip this and just do the whole thing in the Instant Pot you can! All you need to do is hit the yogurt button until it says boil, and then let the Instant Pot do the rest. You follow the remainder of the steps after that.
How Is Coconut Milk Yogurt Different Than Dairy Yogurt
There are a few tricks needed to make yogurt out of coconut milk that dont apply when you are making dairy milk. Namely that coconut milk does not have a lot of natural sugar in it so it needs the addition of maple syrup to feed the bacteria and that it does not thicken the same as dairy once its fermented so we use gelatin to create the consistency we want.
How To Make Gut
This gut-boosting, keto-friendly coconut yogurt requires only three ingredients and minimal prep!
If youve cut out dairy but still want to indulge in creamy yogurt, whip up this dairy-free slow cooker version! Its packed with two gut-healthy ingredients: gelatin and probiotics.
Making tangy and creamy yogurt at home is much easier than you may think. This recipe starts in the slow cooker, heating coconut milk until very hot before whisking in grass-fed gelatin a skin and gut-boosting source of amino acids.

Then, the coconut yogurt cools to 100ºF before adding in the probiotics. Note: If the coconut milk is too hot, it will shock the probiotics and make them less potent. From there, youll let it ferment to your preferred tartness.
How Long Should I Make Yogurt In An Instant Pot
Soheres the weird thing. Pressure cookers that have a Yogurt setting will max out at 12 hours. While it is possible to make yogurt in 12 hours, it doesnt turn out thick and creamy when you use coconut milkit will stay the consistency it went in, meaning thin.
For best results, allow the yogurt to go for 48 hours. To do so, you will need to run four 12-hour cycles in your pressure cooker. At the very minimum, I recommend 24 hours, but 48 is much better in terms of getting your yogurt to be thicker.;

Coconut Yogurt In The Instant Pot
Ive been missing yogurt so much lately, and Carries post on coconut yogurt and ranch dressing got me the worst hankerin for it;that I just HAD to get in the kitchen and try to make it for myself. Since theres been some controversy over Aroy-D being totally free of guar gum or thickeners , I decided to try making it using Natural Value Coconut Cream. Ive used Natural Value coconut milk in the past for other things because it is;free from any gums or thickeners and Natural Value uses BPA-free cans.
I also decided to use two capsules of Kirkman Pro-Bio Gold probiotics. Im pretty sure you could substitute any allergen-friendly probiotic, as long as it has about 20-22 CFUs of live cultures.
I dont have this in the picture below, but after culturing the yogurt, I used Great Lakes Gelatin to thicken it up.The Instant Pot makes yogurt-making a breeze. You basically set it and forget it until the timer goes off. ;I personally do not boil the milk prior to culturing it. For typical yogurt-making using cows milk, that step is recommended to kill off any bacteria before culturing. In the case of using coconut milk, I consider it an unnecessary step. As my four-year-old likes to say EASY PEASY LEMON SQUEEZY! Its so much cuter when she says it
Can I Use Any Other Non
Soyou can trybut I dont recommend it. As I mentioned above, I tried making yogurt using a carton of coconut milk instead of canned coconut milk, and the result was super lackluster. I believe the same would result using a carton of almond milk, cashew milk, rice milk, etc.;
Is it possible to make vegan yogurt using a different non-dairy milk? Absolutelybut if youre itching for almond milk yogurt, for instance, I would just buy it from the store. It requires a lot, a lot of love in order to get it to be remotely delicious.

One: Heat Up Coconut Milk
It is important to mention that canned coconut milk has already been pasteurized, so there is no need to heat the milk to 180 degrees. We can follow a very similar process to Instant Pot Cold Start Yogurt when making coconut milk yogurt.
However, we do need to heat the coconut milk up to about 110-115 degrees to dissolve the gelatin and agar agar. This step also helps the fat from the coconut milk to emulsify into the liquid.
To heat the coconut milk up, hit the Yogurt function on your Instant Pot. Hit yogurt again until it reads;boil.;Pour in the coconut milk and gelatin or agar agar and whisk well to incorporate. Use a digital thermometer to watch the temperature of the yogurt. You want it to reach 110-115 degrees. Once that temperature has been reached, turn the Instant Pot OFF.
