How to Cook Frozen Meat in the Instant Pot

It is totally possible to cook a frozen pork shoulder in the Instant Pot. Heres a quick overview, but be sure to read the important tips below.

First you must start by quartering the pork BEFORE it is frozen. This will ensure even cooking in an Instant Pot if the pork is fresh, frozen, or thawed! Thinking you can cut it in the frozen state? Think again! Its pretty much impossible, so plan ahead and cut a 3-4 pound pork shoulder into four pieces prior to freezing it.

Believe it or not, a frozen pork shoulder takes the same amount of time to cook in an Instant Pot as a fresh one. Because it takes longer to come to pressure, it doesnt need additional cooking time even though its frozen.

So, you will cook a frozen, quartered 3-4 pound pork shoulder in the Instant Pot for 45 minutes with at least a 10-minute natural release of the pressure.

Can You Cook Frozen Meat In A Pressure Cooker

It is possible to pressure cook smaller cuts of frozen meat and frozen poultry. You can also easily pressure cook frozen vegetables. To pressure cook thick pieces of frozen meat like beef or pork roasts, it will take up to one -third more than the normal cooking time, and the results will not taste very good.

Steam Or Pressurize To Finish

Now choose #1 or #2 already cooked or not yet fully cooked to get your dish table ready.

1. If your dish is already cooked use the Steam function for 5 to 10 minutes to reheat the dish. Quick release pressure and check if it’s done, adding more time as needed. This is very similar to how we reheat non-frozen foods as I showed you in #AskWardee 047 and you’ll find more particulars at that episode.

Keep in mind that if your cooked dish contains cheese or dairy, it’s best to reheat it in a glass or heat safe bowl, covered, on a trivet, with a few cups of water in the Instant Pot insert pot.

OR

2. If your dish is not already fully cooked , follow the original recipe’s pressure setting and timing, without adjustment. Yes, without adjustment including the pressure release method and timing.

Example: the original recipe calls for 30 minutes on high pressure with a natural release of 5 minutes. You would do that with frozen contents as well, after adding the 5 minute Saute from Step 2.

How is this possible? Well, it’s because all the frozen food does is make the Instant Pot take longer to get up to pressure. During that time, it thaws. By the time it’s up to pressure, you’re then dealing with thawed foods so the timing should be the same, right? Pretty easy!

The Size Of The Instant Pot Is Important

Keep in mind, reheating 1 portion of cold soup will not take as long as it will take to reheat a full turkey or chicken dinner. When you hear your friends and family talking about how they can reheat their food in an instant pot in 10 minutes or less, you should know that they are probably not having the same meal as yourself.

A few examples of heating foods in an instant pot:

  • A small portion of soup and sauce takes 1 minute
  • A dish of frozen pasta cooked in an instant pot will take 6 minutes
  • A dish of frozen pasta cooked in a pot inside the instant pot can take 26 minutes
  • A whole chicken frozen with veggies can take up to 30 minutes
  • A frozen vegetable curry dish cooked in the instant pot will take 2 minutes
  • A frozen vegetable curry dish cooked in a pot inside the instant pot can take 20 minutes

The size of the serving is what matters the most.

If you have food frozen in a silver foil container, simply placing it in the steamer shelf of the instant pot will allow the food to heat in no time despite the fact that you just took it out of the freezer. On the other hand, if you have a large dish of pasta frozen in a deep glass dish, it can take it at least 26 minutes to heat.
