Which Instant Pot Is Right For You

Food-specific modes and options will make the difference when it comes to picking the best Instant Pot for your cooking needs. If you want to venture into making your own yogurt, or if you love hard-boiled eggs, it’s worth it to pay a bit more for an Instant Pot model that can do those things.

When it comes to choosing the right size, Instant Pot recommends a 3-quart model for one or two people. Families of six or fewer will likely be happy with the 6-quart multicooker. If you have a large household or host large groups often, consider springing for an 8-quart model.

There are options from other brands, too. We recently reviewed a great Wi-Fi multicooker from ChefIQ. It does more than Instant Pot’s Wi-Fi model and comes with an integrated scale, nonstick pot and helpful iOS or Android app. It costs $200, so if you’re not ready to graduate to a high-end model, Instant Pot’s more affordable options are great for beginners.

Instant Pots are beloved because of their ability to cook foods quickly using pressure. But theyre also wildly popular, in part, because theyre true multi-cookers that can be used to braise, sauté, steam, and so much more. But all Instant Pots are not created equaler, not every model can perform every function, and theyre billed accordingly . All Instant Pots can pressure-cook, slow-cook, sauté, and keep warm, and fancier models tack on additional cooking methods like yogurt-making, sous vide cooking, broiling, and air-frying. The functions are customizable, and while you cant air-fry or broil in a model that doesnt have an air-frying lid, people still manage to bake cake in models that dont offer mini oven functionality and make yogurt in models that arent officially marketed for yogurt-making.

I think everyone needs an Instant Pot, but which size you buy depends on your familys specific needs. The Instant Pot does have a 3-quart model which is perfect for a single person or a couple who need to save space, but the 6 quart is the one Id recommend because you can cook a meal and save half for later.

The 8 quart is another option, especially if you have a large family or like to do meal prep or batch cooking. Most of these models come in the larger 8-quart size.

Which model?

I bought the Instant Pot Ultra 6 Qt for my family and still love it after using it for many years! If youre on a budget, you can purchase the Duo, but keep in mind the features youll be losing. I think its worth saving for a few more weeks to be able to pay the difference and purchase the Duo Plus or Ultra!

When I decided to buy an Instant Pot, I started by searching Amazon and found 154 results for Instant Pot. And there are even more this yearsome of the results are for Instant Pot accessories, but there are so many pressure cooker models! It took a lot of research to figure out the differences in features, and which ones were important. I wished someone would just tell me the best Instant Pot to buy.

What is an Instant Pot?

Did you know the Instant Pot is more than just an electric pressure cooker? It replaces several common kitchen appliances including a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, and more! What Is An Instant Pot

The short answer: The Instant Pot is a convenient multi-cooking machine that lets you cook fast or slow.

The longer answer: Because the Instant Pot is a countertop electric pressure cooker and slow cooker wrapped up in one , its designed to help you remove the guesswork of figuring out the ideal amount of heat, pressure, and time your food needs. Its great for beginner cooking and simple meals, like stews and oatmeal. But once you get more comfortable with the machine, its excellent for tougher cuts of meat like baby back ribs or proteins that usually require a long cook time. With a willingness for some trial and error, many recipes can be adapted for the Instant Pot. Generally speaking, when adapting for pressure cooking, the liquid and cook time will need to be cut and adjusted from those of a manual pressure cooker. For slow-cooking, youll need to adjust for less liquid and more time.

What Makes Instant Pot Ultra Better Than Other Multi

As advertised, the Instant Ultra is a programmable pressure cooker. Simply put, you can make recipes beyond the available programs, especially using the ultra function.

First off, you can customize the programs pressure and duration, given that all recipes arent the same. Better yet? You can also adjust the temperature for non-pressure functions. That being said, these are already common in the multi-cooker world.

But wait, heres the best part:

You can also adjust the settingsvolume, altitude, and temperature unit. In other words, you dont have to look for conversions as you can directly place the recipes temperature in either Celsius or Fahrenheit.

On top of that:

The Instant Pot Ultra also boasts a delay cook functionperfect for anyone busy. Primarily, you can set the schedule on when it should cook, and in the meantime, you can do other tasks.

Competition: Smart Models Available

Another of the newer-generation models is the Instant Pot Smart WiFi, which integrates the pot with your home Wi-Fi system to allow you to control it from an app or from your Alexa device. This model doesnt have a sous vide function, though, and the controls are not quite as sophisticated as the Ultra. While Wi-Fi connectivity is cool, Id have to give the nod to the Ultra for its sous vide capability and better user interface.

One of the latest Instant Pot releases is the Instant Pot Max, which can cook at 15psi , like stovetop cookers. It can also be used for pressure canning, and it has a sous vide function. If you have to have the latest gadgets or you like the idea of pressure canning a few jars at a time, the Max is for you, but youll be paying more for less cooking capacity. If you needor wantthe larger cooking capacity, the Ultra does almost everything the Max does and gives you more space for that giant roast in your freezer.

Buy it!

Its hard not to fall right in love with the Instant Pot Ultra 10-in-1 Multi-Use Programmable Pressure Cooker, even though I didnt think Id need the capacity of the 8-quart option I ordered. I liked the user interface, and I like the addition of the start button that just seems to make sense. Id happily recommend this to anyone who has space for it.
