Rice Sticking In Instant Pot

If your rice is sticking to the Instant Pot, check that youre not doing either of the following:

  • Leaving the cooked rice in the rice cooker too long after it is done pressure cooking. Leaving it on keep warm mode for too long after cooking will dry out the rice quickly, and itll stick to the bottom of the pot.
  • Not using enough water. If your water ratio is off, the rice will absorb the water too quickly and will burn and stick to the bottom of the pot.

Consider The Size Of Your Family

If you have a larger family, an instant pot may be the way to go. Instant pots are typically 1-2 quarts bigger than rice cookers, which means they can cook more rice at one time.

If youre planning to make something other than rice with your cooker or pot, then this may not be as important of a factor.

How To Choose Between A Rice Cooker Or An Instant Pot

If you dont want to buy two appliances, a rice cooker and an instant pot, then the decision isnt easy.

However, if youre set on getting one appliance that can do more than just cook rice and want to prioritize your time and money, then its worth considering which appliance will work best for you.

As mentioned, Instant pots are becoming increasingly popular because they can not only cook rice but also make other dishes like soup, stew, or even porridge.

If you want an appliance that can make more than just one dish without having to use another device, then an instant pot may be a better option for you.

On the other hand, if you mostly plan on making rice with your new appliance and would rather save the time of cooking multiple dishes in different pots at once instead of waiting for them all to finish cooking separately, then a rice cooker would be better suited for your needs.

Instant Pot White Rice Recipe

Instant Pot Rice

The best Instant Pot White Rice is made with a simple recipe that results in the most fluffy and tender texture. With the right rice to water ratio, a simple trick so it doesnt clump, and knowing how long to cook it, youll make perfect rice every time!

Growing up we always made our white rice in the rice cooker. It was quick, easy, and was pretty much foolproof.

If youd asked me up until about a year ago Id say the rice cooker was the only way.

That is, until the magical powers of the Instant Pot were discovered.

Not only do the long grains of white rice cook up until perfectly tender and ultra fluffy, but its also ready in a fraction of the time.

Im talking like HALF of the time it takes for a rice cooker or a stovetop method.

Instant Pot white rice is ready in only 20 minutes while cooking it in a rice cooker takes closer to 40 minutes!

And the process is so simple to follow, you might even end up tossing that ole rice cooker away!

Instant Pot Chicken & Rice

If there’s one thing we find magical about Instant Pots, it’s how quickly and perfectly they cook chicken and rice. The rice is the perfect texture and the chicken is insanely tender. This is the meal we cook in the Instant Pot the most often.

IMPORTANT! This recipe works best in a 6-quart instant pot. If using newer versions of Instant Pot, especially 8-quart capacity models, we recommend removing the inner pot after sautéing and letting it cool off for 5 to 10 minutes before moving on to the pressure cooking stage. This will help prevent a potential burn warning.

  • Preheat Instant Pot by setting to Sauté. Add oil and cook onion until softened, 3 to 4 minutes. Add garlic, oregano, and paprika and cook until fragrant, 1 minute.
  • Stir in rice and broth and season with salt and pepper. Add carrots, bell pepper, and chicken, and season generously again with salt and pepper.
  • Close lid, change setting to manual or “Pressure Cook” and set for 8 minutes on High. When 8 minutes is up, let pot decompress naturally for 10 minutes, then release pressure, remove lid, and shred chicken. Top with parsley before serving.

In case youre new here, let me welcome you to The Foreign Fork. Im cooking one meal from every country in the world, which means that I eat a LOT of rice. And by a lot, I mean like. A ton.

Cooking rice on the stove is one of my least favorite things to do. It takes forever! You have to soak it and then boil it and leave it to fluff It takes so long, and sometimes I want my meal to be ready now.

I recently acquired a pressure cooker, and it has been a lifesaver so far in terms of making dinnertime easier. We have loved making creamy macaroni and cheese, chicken marsala, and this awesome pasta with palomino sauce in the Instant Pot! So then I had an idea Why not cook my rice in my Instant Pot?

How To Cook Perfect Rice in the Instant Pot

Why did I use the Manual function key? Since Im using a variety of ingredients I knew I could program it to all finish at the right time using the Manual function. I use it 90% of the time.

When you make soup using the Soup function key the liquid will never go into the heavy boil state and the chicken will remain intact. I actually wanted mine to break down so I didnt use it.

The Meat/Stew function will strip meat from the bone so it could be used if you are using bone-in meat. Since I was cooking rice and vegetables with my meat I didnt use this function.

How do I figure out the time my recipes will use? Consult the manual. O.k. I dont like that answer either. The time is calculated based on the longest item in the pot. For this recipe, its the rice.

The amount of water will remain the same. Different kinds of rice, however, take different amounts of time to cook under pressure. Wild rice and brown rice will require more time than white rice, for instance. Any variety can be cooked at either high or low pressure it comes out a little fluffier at low pressure, and a little chewier at high pressure.

Although you can cook any variety of rice on the automatic rice setting, brown rice works better on either a manual setting, or a setting thats specifically designed for whole grains, such as the Multigrain setting on the Instant Pot.

Here are my preferred cooking times for rice in the pressure cooker:

    • Brown rice: 20 minutes on high pressure for firm rice, or 22 minutes for softer grains
    • White rice: 15 minutes on low pressure for firm rice, or 17 minutes for softer grains

How To Store Long Grain Rice

The best way to serve rice is when made fresh and serve immediately. If you have leftover rice let it cool as fast as possible and store it straight away.

You shouldnt leave cooked rice at room temperature too long as rice can contain bacteria that can cause food poisoning.

You have several options to store rice:

    • Refrigerator you can store rice perfectly in the refrigerator and use it the next day. I never leave rice in the fridge longer than a day. Store it in an airtight container or a resealable bag
    • Freezer if you want to keep it longer you can store it in the freezer. Put it in an airtight container or freezer-friendly resealable bag. Label it before you store it in the freezer for up to 1 month. Longer is possible but can have an impact on the moisture and taste of the rice

Freeze uncooked rice. You can find stories that you can extend the shelf life of rice by freezing it before cooking.

I have never frozen uncooked rice or put it in the fridge as I do not see the need for it.

How Long Does Rice Take In The Instant Pot

    Instant Pot Fluffy Rice
    • 5 minutes for white rice, followed by 10 minutes NPR.
    • 15 minutes for brown rice, followed by 15 minutes NPR.

NPR stands for Natural Pressure Release, which means simply let the Instant Pot sit untouched after the cooking time is up. On the display, if it reads L00:10, it means its been 10 minutes NPR. Then you turn the valve to venting to release the remaining pressure before opening the lid.

Its important to let pressure cooker release pressure naturally for the specified time, because its still part of the cooking time.

Before getting started, if you are new to using an Instant Pot, read my guide on how to use an Instant Pot.

For this recipe, use your favorite long grain white rice. Both basmati and jasmine rice work well.

First, rinse your rice under cool water to remove excess starch. I use a fine mesh strainer to rinse and drain the rice. Place the rice in your Instant Pot.

Add the water and stir to combine. If desired, you can also stir in a little bit of salt to flavor the rice. If you cook your rice in broth you dont need to add any extra salt.

Make sure that all of the rice is in the water and not stuck to the sides of the pot. Then close the Instant Pot lid. Be sure to turn the steam release valve to the sealing position. If you forget to do this, your rice wont cook properly.

White rice needs 4 minutes of cook time at high pressure. Depending on your Instant Pot model, you will use either the Pressure Cook or Manual button.

After the cook time ends, allow the pressure to release naturally for at least 15 minutes by just leaving the Instant Pot alone. You need to do a natural release when cooking rice because this makes the rice fluffy and perfectly cooked. A natural release also helps to keep the rice from sticking to the bottom of your Instant Pot.
