A Few Notes On Using Beans In The Instant Pot

HOW TO COOK BEANS IN THE INSTANT POT & free printable guide

The recipe here is based on a one pound bag of dried beans which comes to two cups dried. Beans tend to come out around triple the amount when cooked. So keep that in mind when measuring beans. You dont need a magic amount of water, simply make sure that you are using at least the minimum required for your Instant Pot size and that the beans are covered by about an inch of water.

This recipe is also based on a 6 Qt. Instant Pot and using red kidney beans. And 8 Qt might cook them quicker and different beans may or may not quick soak faster. One reader reported that her white navy beans were nearly fully cooked in an 8 Qt. at 5 minutes. For that I suggest trying 2-3 minutes of pressure. .

If substituting canned beans for dried beans and vice versa, one pound of dried beans once cooked is equal to about three 15.5 ounce cans.

Note that this is just the presoak of your beans. They will not be fully cooked. To fully cook, you will need more pressure time. If you wish to pressure cook the beans the entire way, most can be done in 30 minutes of high pressure, while some, especially chick peas, can take up t 45. But that can be inconsistent and leave some beans not fully cooked. I find that it is more consistent to quick soak, then do my recipe separately using the quick soaked beans, even if my recipe will pressure cook as long as 30 minutes.

Fast Pinto Beans In The Instant Pot

This Pinto Beans recipe is the best because it is both delicious and fast, thanks to the Instant Pot. Youll love the richness of the beans and the delightful spice. If you use the no soaking method, these beans can take only 30 minutes to cook.

However, traditional cooks often soak their beans before cooking them, since soaking helps to reduce the phytic acid in legumes. If you decide that you do want to soak your beans overnight, your cook time the next day will only be 15 minutes!

How To Flavor Beans

Instead of just cooking dried beans in water alone, I like to add a little flavor to my beans. This step of course is optional but highly encouraged.

  • Along with beans and water, add a half an onion and bay leaf.
  • You will want to add salt or homemade taco seasoning AFTER your beans have been cooked. Adding salt BEFORE cooking dried beans can make it harder for your beans to break down and soften properly.

How To Make Pressure Cooker Pinto Beans

It is very easy to make pinto beans from scratch and it is really cheap because you buy dried pinto beans in big bags.

Start with finely chopping the onion and mincing the garlic. Set your Instant Pot to Sauté on high.

When the pot is warm add oil before adding the onion and garlic.

Sauté and stir the onion mixture for about 3 minutes, until soft and translucent.

Then add the cumin, hot sauce, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, and salt. Stir for a couple of seconds.

Add water and stir it through. Wash the pinto beans in a colander or mesh strainer and put them in the Instant Pot.

Now add the soy sauce and black pepper.

Press the Cancel button on your pressure cooker. Close the lid and secure it, set the valve to the sealing position.

Select Pressure cooker or Manual button and cook on High Pressure for 50-60 minutes.

When the cooking time is done let the pressure cooker naturally release for 15 minutes. Release any remaining pressure.

Open Instant Pot and stir. Serve immediately.

Do I Need To Soak My Beans When Cooking Them In The Instant Pot

Unlike cooking beans on the stove, cooking beans in the Instant Pot does not require soaking. Simply rinse your beans and then add them to the Instant Pot with your cooking liquid and start pressure cooking.

However, I want to mention a few caveats that might make you want to soak your beans even though its not necessary.

Why You Might Want To Soak Dry Beans Before Pressure Cooking

  • Soaking beans for 8-12 hours before cooking may make them easier to digest. Soaking beans helps to remove some of their gas-causing sugars.
  • Soaked beans will also cook faster. With Instant Pot black beans, you can cut about 15 minutes off of the cook time by soaking the beans overnight before cooking them.

    What Are Approximate Cooking Times

    • Once the cooker is up to pressure, soaked black beans, with the pressure released naturally, take 5 to 6 minutes to cook.
    • Soaked black beans with quick release, cook in about 9 minutes, once the cooker comes to pressure.
    • Beans not soaked but pressure quick-released, cook in about 20 minutes, once the cooker comes to pressure.
    • Without a pressure cooker it takes about 2 ½ hours to cook black beans until the beans are tender.
    • Keep in mind that cooking times can vary a few minutes either way, depending on your pressure cooker, the size of the beans, and the age of the dried beans.
    • Sometimes you have to bring the cooker back up to pressure for another minute or two.
    • Other smaller dried beans like navy or cannellini, cook about the same as black beans.

    Should I Salt The Beans

HOW TO COOK BEANS IN THE INSTANT POT

Before you combine the beans and the water, you may be wondering if you should add some salt.

When you add salt, especially if you are planning on using the Instant pot method, it helps prevent the beans from splitting.

I find salted beans to be a lot more flavorful so I do add salt. Keep in mind much of that salted water will be drained after cooking. So, you’re getting a lot less salt than you add.

How To Know When Beans Are Fully Cooked

After a natural pressure release, remove the lid and use a slotted spoon to stir the beans and remove a few to test. If you can squash them between your fingertips and they are tender to bite, they are done. If they are crunchy or impossible to flatten between your fingertips, pressure cook for another 5 10 minutes.

What If My Beans Are Still Hard

Occasionally, you might open your pressure cooker and find that your beans are still a little crunchy or not cooked quite as much as you like. This is fine! The cooking times I give in the recipe are just general guidelines, but know that there can be quite a lot of variability in the beans themselves. Your beans might take a little longer to cook than expected depending on their age, their type, or even the type of water you use .

If your beans aren’t quite done, here’s what to do: Put the lid back on the pressure cooker and make sure the release valve is set back to “sealing.” Cook at high pressure for another 5 to 10 minutes . The pot will quickly come back up to pressure because the contents are already hot. Check your beans after the extra cooking time and continue cooking for longer if needed.

Ratio Of Beans To Water In The Instant Pot

Ive tested several different water ratios:

    • 1 pound black beans + 3 cups water: This ratio left me with inconsistent results. The beans on the bottom were cooked, but the beans on the top were still hard, because they werent totally covered in water as the beans expanded with cooking.
    • 1 pound black beans + 4 cups water: Better, than the 3 cups, but still had a few beans on the very top that were a little too crunchy for my liking. I prefer consistently tender beans all around.
    • 1 pound black beans + 5 cups water: Perfect! All of the beans turn out consistently tender with this amount of water. Yes, you will have some extra liquid in the pot when the beans are done cooking, but Ill show you how to handle that, without draining off the flavor, below.

In general, the perfect ratio of water for cooking black beans in the Instant Pot is 2.5 cups of water per 1 cup of dry beans. If the beans are soaked, you can get away with only 2 cups of water per 1 cup of soaked beans.

And yes, you can cook only 1 cup of dry black beans in your Instant Pot, if you want to. The cooking time will stay the same, no matter how many dry beans you use.

Instant Pot Black Beans: Why Should I Bother

    • At $1 to $2 per pound, black beans are a bargain.
    • These black beans are very freezer friendly, so you can cook a batch and portion them into 1 1/2 cupfuls that you can reach for any time a recipe calls for a 15-ounce can of black beans.
