How To Saute In The Instant Pot

Sauté is a non-pressure cooking program that can be used in place of a frying pan or flat-top grill. For recipes that call for browned onions or garlic, its important to sauté them before adding liquid to the pot as you will release a lot of flavor this way. Another reason to sauté first is for browning meat. Lastly, sautéeing before cooking is a great way to increase heat and reduce the amount of time your pot will take to come to pressure. Learn more about other smart program settings on Instant Pot here.

Step 1. Star the Instant Pot. Insert the inner pot into the cooker base. Do not use the lid for the next step.

Step 2. Press the Sauté button. After 10 seconds, the cooker displays ON to indicate that it has begun heating. When display switches from On to Hot, add ingredients you want to brown. Note: You can add ingredients before the Hot message appears if you do, it may not appear at all. This is normal.

The control panel will display a 30-minute countdown timer as a maximum Sauté time, you can use it for reference if you like or disregard.

The default temperature setting for Sauté function is Normal. Press Sauté again to cycle through for Less and More temperature options. Use Normal for general pan searing or sautéing, Less for simmering, thickening and reducing liquids and More for Stir-frying or browning meat.

Step 4. Add any other ingredients and liquids. Stir if needed or leave layered and continue with the manual or program settings to pressure cook the food.

What Is The Difference Between Steam And Pressure Cook On Instant Pot

Since both cooking methods use steam, its easy to confuse the two. In fact, I remember asking myself the same question .

The difference stands in the fact that when youre steaming the pot doesnt use said steam build pressure. As a result, the veggies wont come out mushy and unrecognizable but whole and snappy.

In short, steaming preserves the natural structure of the food while pressure breaks it down to make it more tender and easy to eat.

Instant Pot Broccoli Without Steamer Basket

If you do not have a steamer basket, you can still make Instant Pot Broccoli. Simply use the trivet that your Instant Pot came with .

Place the trivet in the Instant Pot, along with 3/4 cup water for a 6 quart, 1/2 cup water for a 3 quart, and 1 cup for an 8 quart Instant Pot.

Stack the broccoli on top of the trivet and keep it out of the water as much as possible. Cook as directed, and quickly remove the broccoli to a serving plate with tongs or a large spoon.

You can also dump the entire thing in a colander or strainer, but be careful since the trivet will fall out as well.

Instant Pot Whole Chicken Time Vs Oven Whole Chicken

I am sure you want to know how much faster the instant pot is for cooking a whole chicken compared to baked in the oven.

Is it worth the effort and is it a time saver?

These are the instant pot chicken cook times with the natural pressure release:

    • Small = 19 Minutes + 15 Minutes NPR = 34 Minutes
    • Medium = 20 Minutes + 15 Minutes NPR = 35 Minutes
    • Large = 23 Minutes + 15 Minutes NPR = 38 Minutes
    • Extra Large = 29 Minutes + 15 Minutes NPR = 44 Minutes

Then these are the instant pot chicken cook times vs what it says on the packaging for oven baked:

    • Small = 34 Minutes IP vs 1hr31 = 57 Minutes FASTER
    • Medium = 35 Minutes IP Vs 1hr29 = 54 Minutes FASTER
    • Large = 38 Minutes IP Vs 1hr40 = 62 Minutes FASTER
    • Extra Large = 44 Minutes IP Vs 1hr56 = 72 Minutes FASTER

LOL its seriously not a typo, Morrisons packaging really does say a medium is quicker to cook than a small.

Regardless of this, can you believe how much quicker it is in the instant pot. Of course, this doesnt take into account time to pressure which is about 15 minutes. But even with this time to pressure they are still a good 45 minutes quicker in the instant pot.

How To Steam Broccoli & Other Vegetables Using Your Instant Pot

You dont need to be intimidated by your instant pot. Follow these simple instructions for cooking vegetables under high pressure and youll find out how easy it really is to use! You can use fresh vegetables or frozen vegetables.

  • First, place the stainless bowl into the base of the Instant Pot.
  • Add the wire rack to the bottom of the instant pot.
  • Add 1 cup of water
  • Add broccoli or vegetables of choice such as cauliflower, carrots, mixed vegetables. You can use frozen vegetables as well without needing to add any extra time!
  • Cover and turn to sealing.
  • Set to low pressure for ZERO minutes.
  • The Instant Pot should say ON. When the machine first turns on, it is building pressure. The time that it takes for this pressure to build does NOT count toward the cooking time. On my machine, I know the pressure is built when the silver pin on top is raised.
  • After the cooking time is complete, release the pressure. To release the pressure turn the valve to VENTING.
  • Lastly, take off the lid once it is unlocked.
