Cleaning The Lid And Its Parts

How to Clean an Instant Pot

Oils, aromatic seasonings, fats and liquids tend to settle into the Instant Pot’s seals and gaskets. Here’s a checklist for keeping it clean:

  • Check the steam release valve and red float valve. You’ll want to make sure they’re both free and clear of any food deposits or debris.;
  • Remove the anti-block shield, a silicone nub that covers the float valve from the inside. With the shield off, you can get a better look at the float valve to confirm any blocks or clogs. It’s a small part, so take care not to misplace or lose it.
  • Remove the silicone sealing ring. This part easily picks up strong odors. One method to rid it of any unwanted smells is to wash it separately in the dishwasher. Make sure to select a high-temperature cycle such as sanitize. The combination of high heat and detergent should remove most of the unpleasant odors present.

The silicone ring found in the Instant Pot’s lid tends to attract odors quickly.

Is The Instant Pot Dishwasher Safe

Yes, the sealing ring, lid, and steam rack can all be put into the dishwasher, as well as the inner pot of the Instant Pot. You might want to hand-wash the lid as it does have pieces that can come out in the dishwasher, like the steam handle release and float valve.

You may also be able to put accessories such as springform pans, steamer baskets, pot-in-pot pans, etc. in the dishwasher but be sure to check the product manual for those accessories.

How Often To Clean An Instant Pot

To avoid the buildup of food or odors, all pieces of the Instant Pot that come in contact with food should be cleaned after each use. That could include the inner cooking pot, steam rack, and lid components like the sealing ring and anti-block shield. Other parts that don’t necessarily get dirty each time, such as the exterior or the condensation cup, can be cleaned occasionally or as needed.

Inner Pot And Steam Rack

The inner pot and steam rack are the easiest part of cleanup. The pot and rack go into the dishwasher dirty and come out sparkling clean. Of course, you can always hand wash if you prefer.

After a few washes, if you start to notice water stains or a blueish rainbow effect on the bottom of the pot, don’t panic. Its totally harmless. You can remove the spots with a gentle non-abrasive cleaner, like Bar Keepers Friend or scrub with a sponge soaked in white vinegar. For tougher spots, soak in white vinegar for 5 minutes and rinse. Spots begone!

INSTANT POT CLEANING HACKS! tips for cleaning Instant Pot

Before cleaning your pressure cooker’s lid, the anti-block shield and silicone sealing ring;should be removed and cleaned separately. The anti-block shield is a small round or oval element installed underneath the lid. To remove the anti-block shield, use your thumb to gently push the piece toward the lid rim and lift up to pop it off. Hand-wash the shield in warm, soapy water and wipe dry with a clean cloth. Remove the sealing ring and inspect it carefully for cracking, warping, or other damage, which are signs you need to replace it. The sealing ring can be hand-washed in soapy water or placed in the dishwasher. Because it is heat-resistant, you can place it on either rack of your dishwasher.

With the anti-block shield and sealing ring removed, wash the Instant Pot lid in warm, soapy water or place it on the top rack of the dishwasher. Once clean, check the lid’s steam release valve and float valve to ensure they’re clear of food particles that could prevent the cooker from maintaining pressure. If needed, remove and hand-wash the cup that collects condensation.

Deep Clean Instant Pot

Every few weeks, or sooner depending on usage, the Instant Pot will need a deeper clean than the every day method.

Lets start with this extremely dirty lid of mine. I cooked pasta in the Instant Pot and upon quick release, a bunch of starchy water started spitting out of the venting knob. It definitely needed a deep clean after this happened.

Ew, so gross and dirty!

And filthy on the bottom of the lid too.

Cleaning With The Boiling Process

If you want to know how to clean an instant pot without having to worry about sticking the lid on or off, then you should use the same procedure you would clean a pressure cooker. To remove the liquid from your pressure cooker, first put about half a cup of hot water in the pot, and then place the lid of the cooker over the liquid. Place the pressure cooker lid over the liquid until it begins to boil.

After the water begins to boil, place a cup of white vinegar into the inner pot, and stir until the vinegar is dissolved. Next, use a scrubbing brush or sponge to gently scrub the brown cement from the inner pot. Do not scrub too hard, or you may end up wearing some brown cement yourself! Once the brown cement is removed, carefully wipe away the scrubbing with a towel.

Clean Instant Pot Base

Much like a slow cooker, the base of your pressure cooker contains the heating element and electronic components, so this part should never be submerged in water or placed in the dishwasher. To clean the Instant Pot base, wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth to remove crumbs or food splatters. If you need to clean the inside of the cooking base, use a clean, damp cloth to wipe it down and dry the interior immediately. Clean the recessed area around the lip of the base with a small scrubbing brush or toothbrush to remove any stuck-on food.

The Instant Pot is like any stainless-steel cookware and can develop blueish stains caused by minerals in water and food. To remove these stains, simply soak the pot in white vinegar for about 5 minutes and rinse away. If theres more, soak a sponge in vinegar and use a little elbow grease. Stuck-on food.

For next level shiny pot, we love to use Bar Keepers Friend powder or liquid cleaner. Also dont forget the bottom of the pot on the outside, if you are a Mr. Clean like me.

  • Spray or sprinkle small amount of Bar Keepers Friend inside the dry pot.
  • Scrub with damp pad or cloth until clean.
  • Rinse a few times very well.
  • Final verdict: And here is how shiny and spotless stainless steel pot looks like when cleaned with Bar Keepers Friend. Definitely, it is more powerful than baking soda. I prefer cream to powder cleaner because it scratches less, which is particularly important when cleaning quartz countertops.

    Tips To Prevent Burning In The Instant Pot

    • USE ENOUGH LIQUID:; Most recipes will need at least 1 cup of liquid to create pressure and prevent burning.; This rule of thumb can vary with food like meat and fruit that release liquid as the pot is heating up.;;
    • AVOID THICK LIQUIDS:; Liquids that are thick like tomato based sauces and sweet sauces like BBQ or Teriyaki are often the culprit of the dreaded Instant Pot BURN message.; Add them after the food is cooked or add water to the pot to thin them out before pressure cooking.
    • DEGLAZE THE POT:; If you saute vegetables or sear meat in the pot, you will likely have browned bits on the bottom of the pot.; Add a splash of liquid and use a wooden spoon to scrape them up before pressure cooking.
    • CHECK THE SEAL AND PRESSURE RELEASE KNOB: The silicone seal must be installed correctly and the knob turned to a sealed position to prevent the liquid from inside the pot from evaporating.; If the liquid evaporates, the food inside will burn on the bottom of the pot.;;;;

    Get Rid Of The Smell From The Silicon Sealing Ring

    The silicone ring at the bottom of the Instant Pot lid is a favorite spot for smells and food particles build-up. Thus, it will need a thorough clean. Although the part is dishwasher safe, the smell may still linger even after dishwashing.

    To deep clean the sealing ring, put a cup of water, a cup of vinegar, and a chopped lemon ring in the pot. Seal the pot, run the steam setting for at least two minutes, and let the pressure release naturally. When its safe, open the lid, remove the ring, and air-dry it before replacing it. If the silicon ring is worn out, replace it before using the pot.

    To Clean The Exterior Side Of The Pot:

    If you wish to deep clean your exterior pot, you will need to take the same ingredients that were used to clean the inner pot, except you will replace the evaporated water with a few tablespoons of hot tap water. Add about one-fourth of a cup of baking soda to the water. Stir to mix. Place the pot on a wire rack that is placed inside a shallow dishpan. Cover with a damp cloth, and bring to a boil. Turn off the burners, and turn up the heat to medium-high, or boil your dish to make sure it stays hot.

    While your inner pot is heating up, wash and dry the outside of the pot, making sure the entire surface is well-cleaned. When the outer surface has been thoroughly cleaned, turn the dial to low, and allow the inner pot to sit for about fifteen minutes, or until the steam begins to dissipate. Turn up the heat to medium-high, and continue to dry the pot.
