How to make Long Grain White Rice in your Instant Pot

My favorite variety of rice to make in the Instant Pot is jasmine rice. Any white rice is fine, but Ive had the best results with Jasmine rice. For white rice, simply combine rice and liquid in the Instant Pot and cook for 4 minutes. Ive found that to achieve a nice fluffy texture, allow for about 3-4 minutes of natural release before releasing the remaining pressure. Next, fluff the rice with a fork, and serve!

All types of rice can be cooked in the Instant Pot, including brown rice and cauliflower rice. For cooking other varieties of rice in the Instant Pot, see my notes and instructions below.

How To Cook Rice In Instant Pot

Before getting started, if you are new to using an Instant Pot, read my guide on how to use an Instant Pot.

For this recipe, use your favorite long grain white rice. Both basmati and jasmine rice work well.

First, rinse your rice under cool water to remove excess starch. I use a fine mesh strainer to rinse and drain the rice. Place the rice in your Instant Pot.

Add the water and stir to combine. If desired, you can also stir in a little bit of salt to flavor the rice. If you cook your rice in broth you dont need to add any extra salt.

Make sure that all of the rice is in the water and not stuck to the sides of the pot. Then close the Instant Pot lid. Be sure to turn the steam release valve to the sealing position. If you forget to do this, your rice wont cook properly.

White rice needs 4 minutes of cook time at high pressure. Depending on your Instant Pot model, you will use either the Pressure Cook or Manual button.

After the cook time ends, allow the pressure to release naturally for at least 15 minutes by just leaving the Instant Pot alone. You need to do a natural release when cooking rice because this makes the rice fluffy and perfectly cooked. A natural release also helps to keep the rice from sticking to the bottom of your Instant Pot.

Minimum Amounts Of Rice

One last rule of thumb to keep in mind is that youll need to cook at least 1 1/2 cups of rice in a 6-quart pressure cooker to get nice, even results. This is because the bottom of the pot isnt perfectly flat, but slightly concave. If you use less rice, the grains in the middle of the pot will not cook as evenly, since they wont be submerged in the water as much as the rice on the sides of the pot.

On the flip side, dont overfill your pressure cooker with too much rice, either! It should be half full or less when youre cooking any grains, beans, pastas, or other foods that can tend to foam up. I find that I get the best results when I cook between 1 1/2 and 3 cups of rice at a time.

  • TIP! By the way, you can always make extra rice and freeze the extra. Here’s how to do that.

Those are my best tips for cooking rice! Of course, you can also just follow the basic recipe below. Either way, enjoy!

Natural Pressure Release Vs Quick Pressure Release

Whats better? Hands down, no doubt >>natural pressure release. If you cook rice longer so you can do quick pressure release, with the hope to have the rice cooked faster overall, it gets sticky and mushy.

I encourage you to be patient and wait for natural pressure release. I timed all rice and there doesnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to the timing. Even the same kind of rice in the same amount has had different natural pressure release times.

How To Make Rice In An Instant Pot

If you follow these simple steps, you’ll have fluffy, perfectly cooked long-grain white rice every time.

  • Rinse the rice. Rinse the rice in a colander until the water runs clear, and then drain it very well. While this step is technically optional, it does result in fluffier, better-textured rice.
  • Add it to the pot. Once the rice is rinsed and drained, add it to the inner pot of the Instant Pot.
  • Measure the liquid. To make white rice, you’ll use equal parts liquid and rice. Note that you cannot make less than a cup of rice in the Instant Pot since it needs a minimum of about 1 cup of liquid for the pot to come to pressure.
  • Season. Salt is a common addition, but you can add other flavorings like spices.
  • Lock the lid. Turn the lid until it locks and make sure the valve is in the sealing position.
  • Program the pot. Select manual/pressure cook and set the Instant Pot to 3 minutes at high pressure.
  • Use a natural release. Let the pot naturally release its pressure after cooking for at least 10 minutes. If the Instant Pot still hasn’t unlocked, you can release the remaining pressure manually.
  • Fluff and serve. Use a fork to fluff the rice and serve while hot.

The 3 Dilemmas Before Making Rice With The Instant Pot

Before I go straight to the Instant Pot Rice recipe, I want to tell you why it took me a long time to share this post. If you follow my blog for some time, you probably know that I have my Instant Pot for a while and I;love using it to make various dishes.

But why havent I used my favorite Instant Pot to cook steamed rice? Heres why I had avoided using the Instant Pot to cook rice:

My Rice Is Sticking To The Bottom

    Instant Pot Rice

Did you do a quick release or a natural release? One of the reasons rice will stick to the bottom is because you have to let the pressure go down slowly instead of abruptly. You want to do a natural release for at least 10-minutes.

Was your keep warm button on? The heat from the keep warm function can continue to cook the rice during your natural release. Be sure to turn off your keep warm function to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom. You want fluffy rice particles, not clumpy, sticky rice.

At the end of the day, finding the perfect rice times will depend on the type of rice you use, the location you live and the amount of water you add to the rice. Dont be scared to experiment and you can get the perfect pressure cooker rice every time you cook it! Enjoy!

Sauté the onion in your Instant Pot until soft; add the remaining ingredients . Be sure to rinse the rice and drain it prior to adding it. Give it all a stir. Close the Instant Pot’s lid, set the valve on “sealing” and cook on high pressure for 10 minutes. Do a quick release. Give it a stir. Eat.

***Note:There is a chance that a burn warning will occur. I have never seen a burn warning on my own Instant Pot , so I am perplexed, but I’ve definitely heard of this happening. I recommend you follow the directions exactly. I’ve tested cooking this rice at various intervals, including 10 minutes, 15 minutes, and even 18 minutes and I have yet to get a burn warning or wreck the rice.

If you’re not a fan of soft and creamy rice, you may not like this recipe. It’s definitely not al dente.

Pro tip: You may use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth if this recipe needs to be vegetarian, but I do find chicken broth in general to be more flavorful.

I hope you’ll give this easy Instant Pot rice recipe a try!
