How It Performs As An Air Fryer
I cooked several of my favorite air fryer foods with the Duo Crisp and its Ultimate Lid. The air fryer was plenty proficient once it got heated. Speaking of which, this is one of the only air fryers I’ve used that needed an official preheat time. For an air frying session at 400 degrees Fahrenheit, it took about five minutes to preheat plus the actual cook time. I’m used to air fryers that don’t need preheating, so it took getting used to.

Instant Pot Pro Crisp: Performance And Size
One of the main attractions of the Instant Pot Pro Crisp is its improved performance when it comes to air frying. Though the Instant Pot Duo Crisp is also capable of air frying, the Pro Crisp can reach 50 degrees higher in temperature, a desirable selling point for those who will use the air frying lid regularly. This makes the range in temperature of the Instant Pot Pro Crisp 70°F to 450°F , making broiling and dehydrating possible in just one pot.
The Instant Pot Pro Crisp is only available in an eight-quart size, the largest that the brand offers, due to its additional lids. Whilst this is an excellent size for a large family or to cater for family functions, its capacity might be a little much for a smaller household. Instant Pot Duo Crisp The First Combined Version
The Instant Pot Duo Crisp was released by Instant Brands in November 2019. They call it one of their Instant Pot that air fries models. It also combines multiple kitchen appliances into one device while combining two cooking modes too.
The duo in the name refers to the 2 pressure cooking levels it has. Their original pressure cooker model only had one pressure. The Duo Crisp is available in two sizes: 6 quarts and 8 quarts.
In addition to being originally released in November 2019 as an 8 quart, Instant brands released a smaller 6 quart exclusive to Walmart later. Depending on the features you want double-check the box or product page before making a purchase to ensure you buy the version you intended.
Features: Pressure Release Toggle
The pressure cooker lid is similar to other Instant Pot lids, and it twists on and locks when the pot comes to pressure. But while it looks familiar, it has some new features. A toggle is used to choose Venting or Pressure, but with this model, theres no need to actually select Pressure since the cooker automatically moves the toggle to Pressure when the lid is put in place.

This cooker is designed so it can be cooled more quickly than other models by using the quick-cool tray . That tray needs to be filled with water, then frozen. The plastic cover on top of the lid is removed, the tray is placed on the metal, and the pressure cooker cools much more quickly while using a natural release.
Unlike some Instant Pot pressure cookers, this one doesnt have programs for things like poultry or grains. But I’m fine with that. Chicken breasts dont cook the same as thighs, and turkey isnt the same as chicken, so I think its better to set times based on the exact food being cooked. On the other hand, the lack of programs means cooks will need to use trusted recipes or look up times and temperatures for every cook.

This comes with quite a few accessories. Fortunately, most fit neatly inside the inner cooking pot, so they dont take up extra storage space. The cooker includes a reversible rack that can be used to raise foods slightly above the bottom of the pot or reversed to hold food closer to the top. That rack can be used for either air frying or pressure cooking. When I cooked an acorn squash using both pressure and air frying, I let the squash sit low in the pot, but when I broiled pork ribs, I raised them high.

This also includes a nonstick air fryer basket with a base that lifts it off the bottom of the pot for better air circulation when frying, and a dehydrate/broil rack that fits in the basket for dual-level cooking or to raise foods closer to the top of the cooker. The manual has no information about using the air fry basket for pressure cooking, but I contacted the company online and was told it is safe for pressure cooking as well as frying. A trivet/base for the air fryer lid is the last of the accessories.
For storage, the air fryer basket, its base and rack, and the reversible rack fit inside the cooker. The power cord wraps around the bottom of the cooker, and a small tab holds the cord in place so it wont dangle on the way to the pantry. The protective pad for the air fryer lid twists on so it stays in place, so the lid can be stored without worry about damaging it.

Prices Vary Between The Models And Sizes
And finally, the prices will vary depending on the size and Instant Pot model you buy. With different features come different prices. Typically the Pro Crisp will cost more than the Duo Crisp, given the new lid features and higher cooking temperature. Keep an eye out for special deals and flash sales to save money on your purchase.
An Effective And Efficient Air Fryer
The Pro Crisp can pressure-cook, slow cook, sauté and steam just as well as all the other Instant Pot modelsthat much became clear early on in my testing process. Where it really shines is in its ability to air-fry, a feature that simply isnt offered on earlier Instant Pot models. Delivering consistently crunchy, crispy results, the model performed well beyond my expectations. My first culinary test involved attempting to air-fry a box of gluten-free chicken nuggets. In the past, Ive cooked this particular brand in the oven, and the coating has been notoriously difficult to get crispy. But when I dropped them in the Pro Crisp, that all changed: The nuggets turned out remarkably crunchy, almost as if they had been deep-fried.
Still, the quantity of nuggets Id chosen was fairly small, so they could fit easily in a single layer in the air-fry basket. Wondering how the device would fare with several layers of ingredients, I dumped in a big bag of frozen curly fries. Once again, I was wowed: First, the machine helpfully alerted me at the halfway point, reminding me to toss the fries to ensure even crispness. Second, each fry came out perfectly cooked and super crispy. The bonus here was that they finished in just 10 minutes . Thats less than half the time theyd need to bake in the oven.

It does take up a lot of space, especially because there are two lids to store, but it will save you the space that an air fryer takes up by offering all the capabilities in one smart machine.

The new Instant Pot + Air Fryer is a little heavier than the previous model. The Pro Crisp weighs a little over 26 lbs. If youre concerned about lifting that much weight, lift it in pieces instead. Move the lid separately from the base and remove the liner, especially if its full.
The updated Air Fryer lid is about an inch shorter than the original version. Depending on how your store your Instant Pot, this could be useful as well.
The Max Temperature On The Pro Crisp Is Hotter
Looking at the air fry lid smart programs side by side, youll notice the maximum temperature for the Pro Crisp has increased to 450 F. The Duo Crisps top temperature is 400 F.
Depending on what youre cooking, the extra hot temperature will be helpful, especially if youre using the broiler function. And note with the broiler function on both models, you cant adjust the temperature.

Instant has gone for a different look with this new model: the matte black plastic finish all over looks smart, but it might be too plasticky for some people. And unlike most of the previous Instant Pot designs, this model features a hinged lid, which isnt removable.
The dimensions are 13.4 x 15.4 x 15.5 inches/ 34 x 39.1 x 39.3cm , and the stainless steel cooking pot has a 6.5-quart/ 6-liter capacity. It’s chunky then, so those who dont plan to let it sit on the countertop will need to find a fair bit of storage space for it but at least theres no second lid to accommodate.
We reviewed the Instant Pot Duo Crisp in the UK, where its supplied with an air frying basket that slots inside the cooking pot. In the US, the model comes with an air fry/cooking rack instead but they both essentially serve the same purpose. Both models have the same removable lid insert that must be in position for certain cooking modes thankfully, the display alerts you when to add or remove it. Plus, removing it is as easy as pulling on a big ring pull while pressing a release button. So while this model has one main lid, the insert acts as a second lid, making it more of a hybrid than the true one-lid designs weve seen from the likes of Ninja.

Instant Pot Duo Nova: Not everyone needs the newest model, and not everyone needs an air fryer. Thats where the Instant Pot Duo Nova comes in. Retailing around $120, the Duo Nova is a 7-in-1 pressure cooker that features the usual programs like pressure cook, saute, yogurt, etc., that Instant Pot is known for. Its a great model for beginners, and its great as a second cooker in a busy house. The Pro Crisp is for a different audience. I love it and would recommend it to those who want the air frying option.
