Can You Cook Frozen Ribs In A Crockpot
Does Meat Get More Tender The Longer You Pressure Cook It
Yes, the longer you pressure cook, the more tender the meat will be because the connective tissues are broken down more. But this doesnt mean you must always cook it long because it might become too tender.
Having a bit of chew on your meat is important too. This is why I made sure my Instant Pot pork ribs recipe has that perfect fall-of-the-bone tenderness while having a good chew.
Option 2 Air Fryer Lid
Place the air fryer basket with the tray on the middle rack in Instant Pot .
Now, layer the ribs on the air fryer tray in Instant Pot.
Then, place the Air Fryer Lid on the Instant Pot.

*Pro Tip: It will take roughly 9 11 minutes + preheat time. You can open the lid to check the progress.
Now, air fry the second batch of BBQ ribs in the Instant Pot.

Can Instant Pot Pork Ribs Be Made Ahead
Yes. You can make the ribs up to 2 days in advance by cooking them in the Instant Pot then storing them in a covered container in the fridge until youre ready to finish them off by adding the sauce and broiling or grilling to reheat them.
For the ultimate reheat and eat convenience, prepare the ribs as directed, then cut the ribs into individual ribs before storing the fridge. Baby back ribs can be reheated in the microwave or toaster oven for a quick and easy meal.
My Go-To Method for Making-Ahead + Reheating Ribs
1. Cook and cool the ribs . Refrigerate up to 3 days.2. Place ribs in roasting pan or large baking dish, overlapping them as needed. Add a little broth to the bottom of the pan and cover with a lid or foil.3. Place in a preheated 350F oven and bake until heated through , adding more liquid as needed to keep the pan from boiling dry.4. Transfer ribs to a large baking sheet, brush with sauce and either broil or grill them until the sauce starts to caramelize.
Faster Ribs Thanks To The Instant Pot
Discovering that I could make tender, smoky ribs in the Instant Pot was nothing short of life-changing. Ribs, before the Instant Pot, were a once-a-summer special-occasion treat, slowly smoked on the barbecue and slathered with sauce until lacquered and glossy. But ribs are inexpensive and satisfying, and discovering I could cook ribs to tenderness in under an hour swung the door of possibility right open. Wont you step in and join me?
Your Secret Summer Seasoning: Smoked Salt
Smoked salt is a seasoning that every cook should have in their pantry. Not only does it do the same work of liquid smoke with less effort, but it is also flavorful and wonderful for adding to everything from ribs to salty caramels. I love this smoked salt from Spice House. A little will go a long way, making the small bottle a worthy investment.

Spare Ribs Vs St Louis Style Ribs
How about St. Louis Style Ribs?
St. Louis Ribs are actually a part of Spare Ribs!
You simply trim off the flap, skirt, & rib tips from a rack of spare ribs to end up with a rack of St. Louis Style Ribs .
Compared to Baby Back Ribs, St. Louis Style Ribs have less meat, thinner, & flatter, but the meat is fattier & more flavorful!
What Kind Of Ribs To Buy
I recommend making this Instant Pot ribs recipe with baby back ribs. Baby back ribs are the most tender type of pork ribs. They are smaller than spareribs and thats why theyre called baby back ribs because of their small size. A rack of baby back ribs contains about 12 ribs and will serve about 4 people, depending on how big of an appetite they have.
You can also use spareribs in this recipe. Spareribs are larger than baby back ribs and will take longer to cook in the Instant Pot. They are often fattier but may also have more meat on each rib.

Instant Pot Beef Ribs Vs Baby Back Ribs
To start off, beef ribs as the name states, are from a cow. These ribs are typically the ribs that come from a rib roast. These are the ribs labeled beef ribs in the grocery store. When you have a boneless ribeye, these are the bones that have been removed.
Baby back ribs are pork and are from a pig, not a cow. These ribs tend to cook much quicker and are smaller than the beef ribs. If you love baby back ribs, check out my post where I teach you how to Instant Pot baby back ribs.
How To Prep The Ribs
To prep the ribs, wash and pat dry to remove any excess moisture. Check if the membrane is still there on the boney side, as usually it is already removed. However, if its still there, heres how you remove it:
Place the ribs upside down on a cutting board, and using a butter knife slide under the membrane on the back of the bone. It is a thin layer, so you dont need to go deep. Once you have loosened it, take a paper towel and grab onto it with one hand. Hold the ribs down with the other hand and gently pull on the membrane, It should come off easily.

Apply Sauce & Broil In Oven/air Fryer
First, carefully set the spare ribs on an oven tray or chopping board, then generously apply your favorite BBQ sauce all over the ribs on all sides.
*Pro Tip: If you have a large oven, you can finish the spare ribs in one batch. If youre using the Duo Crisp lid or Air Fryer lid, youll need to cut the spare ribs into halves, then finish them in 2 batches.
*Pro Tip: Its best to broil the spare ribs before cutting it into serving size to retain more moisture.

How Many Ribs Can Fit In An Instant Pot
This will depend somewhat on the type of rib you use. Our favorite is the lean, mean baby back rib, which is cut from the spine of a pig, near the loin. These ribs are just so tender and theyre our go-to. Four pounds of baby back ribs equals roughly 14 ribs, and that fits comfortably into a standard Instant Pot.

How To Make Instant Pot Ribs
The best Instant Pot ribs start with baby back ribs as theyre so tender.
PREPARE THE RIBS
I always rinse the ribs and then remove the membrane. The membrane very thin and located on the back of the ribs. Simply slide your knife under it to get ahold of it and then pull it off. If you cant seem to find it, ribs sometimes come with the membrane already removed and some people leave it on .
Once youve pulled it off, cut your slabs of ribs into two or 3 pieces as theyll need to fit into the Instant Pot. Combine your spice rub and massage it into the ribs on both sides.
ADD TO THE INSTANT POT
A trivet ensures the ribs are not sitting in the liquid if you dont have one you can prop them up on the onion slices.
Finally add the liquid to the bottom of the slow cooker and the ribs, seal, and cook .
FINISH THE RIBS
Once the ribs are nice and tender, allow them to naturally release for a little bit.
Add salt & pepper or bbq sauce and either broil or grill them for a few minutes to crisp up a bit.
Can I Skip The Alcohol
If youre worried about the alcohol content, you need not be.
Since the alcohol in this recipe is being used to deglaze, it does evaporate a lot. However, if you prefer the alcohol to be completely gone, cook it a little longer before adding the other liquids. You can also add less burbon.
I have also had readers who substituted the bourbon with wine , and even coffee.
These pressure cooker short ribs are braised in my own homemade beef and chicken stock, but you can braise them in a good quality beef stock instead too. These instant pot short ribs are cooked to perfection in a slightly sweet and slightly spicy base. I added cayenne pepper and paprika to give these short ribs a little spicy kick. I usually add up to 2 tsp of cayenne pepper . But Ive adjusted it to a milder level in this recipe. But feel free to adjust the level of spice to your liking.
The first step to making these instant pot short ribs is preparing the short ribs. This step is all the labor required for this recipe on your part!
After this step, everything else is hands-off. So while these pressure cooker short ribs are cooking, you can prepare the rest of the meal.

Ill be completely honest with you.
We had to recipe test these ribs a minimum of 3 times to completely perfect them. So I came home with 2 racks of baby back ribs on 3 separate occasions. In a span of 2 weeks, of course.
That being said, we can really thank Ben for this recipe. He was an avid recipe tester here, thoroughly eating through all the ribs each and every time.
So, thank you, babe. Youve helped us create the most perfect tender, fall-off-the-bone ribs each and every time in less than one hour.

What Are Spare Ribs
The most common cuts of pork ribs are Spare Ribs, Baby Back Ribs, and St. Louis Style Ribs.
Spare Ribs are the cut of pork ribs from the bottom of the rib cage . The full slab of meat has straight & flat bones.
Its meaty, tender, and packed with porky flavors. In comparison, Spare Ribs are longer and a bigger cut of meat than baby back ribs and St. Louis Style Ribs, while likely being the least expensive!

Whereas, Baby Back Ribs are the cut of pork ribs from the top of the rib cage .
How To Natural Release On An Instant Pot
When making an Instant Pot recipe, youll need to either quick release or natural release the pressure before opening it.
Natural release on the Instant Pot means you allow the pressure to gradually release without opening the valve.
Once your Instant Pot finishes the cooking, it will beep, and then it will start counting up on the keep warm mode. This recipe has a natural release time of 5 minutes so once the timer shows 5 minutes, you can then open the valve to release the rest of the pressure.

What Is The Trivet For The Instant Pot
If youve made a recipe in the Instant Pot before, you may or may not have used a trivet. A trivet is usually a metal stand that is 1-4 inches in height that allows you to cook food without the food sitting in the liquid. Liquid is needed for the pressure cooker to come up to pressure. Without added liquid no recipe will work at all.
Below are some of my favorite trivets for the Instant Pot
- Super basic trivet without arms. This one is good for making things in circle containers that would normally be a really tight fit, like my Instant Pot Low Carb Cheesecake.
- Taller trivets are really nice because they allow you to cook more than one food item at a time. You can be cooking something in the liquid below and then cooking something in a container above.
- Some trivets are now being designed with steamer baskets built in. This is super handy because it will save you from doing one more dish!
