Secrets To Perfect Steamed Rice (How To Make Perfect Steamed Rice With Instant Pot)

If you open the Instant Pot to find rice soup and it seems that none of the water is absorbed, one of three things probably happened.

  • You added too much water. Cut it down by at least a half-cup per cup of rice next time.
  • You didnt cook it long enough. Brown rice needs 22 to 28 minutes, and white rice needs 12 minutes on low pressure. If you have rice soup, turn the Instant Pot back on for 5 to 10 more minutes and see what happens.
  • Your Instant Pot may not have come up to pressure. Follow all of my troubleshooting tips in this post and make sure that your pin is coming up and that a lot of steam releases when you open the valve.
  • Anytime you have rice soup, you can absolutely turn the pressure cooker on again, and eventually, you will be able to save it. Also note that if you are using a liquid other than water, such as chicken broth, the absorption is impacted. Sometimes you need slightly less chicken broth than water.

Where To Buy An Instant Pot

    This is the 6-quart Instant Pot I started out with. After a few years, we added an 8-quart partly because I knew I would use two at the same time often enough, partly because it was the Prime Day sale, and also because I wanted more space for certain recipes. Both are a pretty basic model and you dont need more bells and whistles than that!;

If youre deciding on size, most people say its better to get a deal on the 6-quart and just have 2 rather than go big, BUT if your family has 5 or more people or you really like to batch cook or do more than a pound of beans, the 8-quart may be the best choice. Results & Rice Texture

So what makes Instant Pot rice good? Well, it will definitely give you a different type of texture. The results of Instant Pot rice have more distinct rice grains than a rice cookerthis was made even more significant because I used short-grain rice, which is known for its stickier consistency.

Its different and not necessarily better or worse, depending on what you like or expect. You can perhaps keep tinkering with the time and water to rice ratios to dial it in, but this is one that I prefer. But I found that even adding ¼ cup more water takes the grains from distinct to something mushier.

Does Rice Have To Be Rinsed Before Cooking

Opinions vary widely and there seems to be no right or wrong answer. Its all up to personal preference. However, thankfully it is irrelevant for the cooking times presented.

Both rinsed and dry rice work with my cooking times and method. Nothing has to be adjusted or changed either way. Just make sure you drain your rice well if you rinse it. Then use 1:1 ratio.

    Figuring Out The Recipe

Cooking Steamed Rice using “Instant Pot” | Kusina ni Zaina

The machine: I used the Ultra version of the Instant Pot, but its likely the same in their most popular Duo model, and even other brands of electric pressure cookers.

The rice: I used a medium grain white rice

Measuring tools: I used only the scoop that came with the Instant Pot. When I say scoop anywhere in this post, this is what it refers to. This scoop is actually the same size as the one that came with my dedicated rice cooker.

How many tests did this take? I honestly dont even remember how many, so that will tell you Ive had manyfailures adjustments. After cooking rice in many different ways , I thought figuring out how to make rice in an Instant Pot was going to be a breeze.

Id like to think that eating rice for my entire life had made me somewhat of a rice connoisseur . Either way, I discovered theres a very fine line between mushy rice and properly cooked rice.

One aspect of the Instant Pot that I didnt take into account was the addition of pressure. Similar to using rice cookers or even cooking rice on the stovetop, you cant really just open it to check progress. This meant I had to wait out the entire cooking process to see the resultsthis meant any adjustments had to be on future batches if the recipe was going to be something easy to replicate by others .

Instant Pot Setting & Cooking Time

Rice is primarily cooked in the instant pot at a preset LOW pressure for 12 minutes. But jasmine rice is softer, and though you can use this preset for it as well, it may come out gooey than needed. So, its best to use the Manual/Pressure Cook settings for jasmine rice at about three to four minutes. After this time, an additional ten minutes is allowed for the instant pot to release pressure naturally. Also, whether releasing the valve or removing the lid of the pressure cooker, be sure to protect yourself from the steam. Try using a long wooden spoon to adjust the pressure valve.

What Is The Venting Position On The Instant Pot

    3. Open lid : Hold lid handles, rotate lid clockwise until the opening is visible, lift lid to reveal the pot. Turn steam setting to Vent when opening the top. Note: To prevent vacuum on lid when turning steam off, hold the handle of steam button to prevent the door from opening. When the pressure is released, reverse the direction of rotation to vent. If the screen is covered, do not turn on vent mode. Instead, press and hold steam switch to turn off the water. Press and release steam switches to start and stop the flow of water while cooking. Do not use the ventilation function if there is a screen covering the display.

Should I Use The Rice Button

All Instant Pot models come with a “rice” button which functions similarly to a rice cooker. While it’s convenient since you only have to press one button, it only works for long-grained white rice and is not recommended for other varieties like short-grain rice or brown rice.

“I never use the rice button,” says Haymaker. “I’ve had much more success just looking up cook times for various types of rice and using the manual pressure setting.”

How Much Rice Can You Cook In An Instant Pot

How to steam broccoli in the Instant Pot

The recipe below is for cooking 2 cups of rice, which will yield about 6 cups of cooked rice. The water to rice ratio and cook time stay the same regardless of the amount of rice you are cooking.

You can cook more rice as long as you dont exceed the maximum fill lines on your pot. Rice will expand as it cooks, so you have to account for this:

    • You can double this recipe to cook 4 cups of rice in a 6 quart Instant Pot, which will make about 12 cups of cooked rice.
    • If you have an 8 quart Instant Pot , you can triple this recipe to cook 6 cups rice. This will make about 18 cups of cooked rice.

What If My Rice Is Too Mushy

You most likely used too much water. 1:1 water to rice ratio is essential for all rice types.

Use the exact same container to measure both rice and water. Some cups are standard American , others are metric and the little plastic cup that comes with the Instant Pot is neither . So do not use different measuring cups to measure rice and water.

    Soak Rice For 20 Minutes

I tried both soaking rice and skip soaking rice prior to cook rice in the Instant Pot. Whether its cooked in manual mode or Rice mode,;when I didnt soak rice, it did not become tender all the way through.

This is probably the only difference between cooking other types of rice. I often get asked why we need to soak Japanese short grain rice. Unlike the other types of rice, Japanese short grain rice is plump, and it takes time for the moisture to go through. Therefore, we always soak the rice first, giving the dry rice a head start in absorbing moisture.

Why Do I Have To Rinse Rice

The chief reason to rinse is to remove surface starch from rice grains, which can make them gummy as they cook. Soaking allows rice to absorb water, giving it a leg up on cooking. This helps it to have a better, more even texture, instead of drying out while the inside is not evenly steamed and fluffed.

How Do You Make Rice In The Instant Pot

Instant Pot Steamed Rice » Wheat by the Wayside

Its very simple, but there are a couple changes that I make from my traditional recipe for perfect rice on the stovetop. First is the water ratio While I generally use 1 cup rice to 1 ¼ cups water for my stovetop rice, in the Instant Pot, that ratio drops down to 1-to-1. 1 cup of water for every one cup of rice You can make as little or as much Instant Pot rice as youd like.

The reason for the reduced water is that the Instant Pot is more sealed than a traditional cooking pot, meaning less evaporation of water during the cooking process. Be sure to rinse that rice before adding it to the Instant Pot, to get rid of any additional starches Just run it under water until the water is clear. The result is perfect Instant Pot rice thats light and fluffy.

I also like to add in 1 teaspoon of oil for each cup of rice that Im making This not only prevents the rice from sticking to the pot, but it also cuts down on the foaming a bit so that your Instant Pot doesnt sputter and spit. Plus, for perfect Instant Pot rice, I always add a pinch of salt for each cup of rice that Im cooking, to flavor the rice right from the get-go.

Ingredients Needed For Easy Instant Pot Rice

You can use any flavor of Rice-A-Roni that you want to make this delicious side dish. I like using the low-sodium Chicken version.

Here is everything you need to make the best boxed rice in the Instant Pot:

    • Rice-A-Roni whichever flavor you like
    • Butter or olive oil

For a full-flavor version, use low-sodium chicken broth for all the water and broth mixture.

For a healthier side dish, add up to 1 cup of diced frozen vegetables.

    Want Fluffy Rice Rinse Well

I dont always remember or have time to do this step, but it helps when I do: Rinse the rice in a wire mesh colander under cold water for 30 seconds or so, or until the water runs mostly clear.

Rinsing makes the rice fluffy, and seems to make more of a difference with white rice varieties verses brown; the latter is protected by its hull and doesnt tend to have a lot of extra starch clinging to the outside of the grains.

Finding The Right Rice To Water Ratio

Most packaged rice will call for a 2:1 ratio of water to rice. For example, 2 cups of water and 1 cup of rice. In the Instant Pot, because nearly no liquid is lost through steam releasing, you can actually use a 1:1 ratio for most rice varieties.

So, 1 cup of rice and 1 cup of water thats it! Some find they want their rice a little fluffier, and if this is your preference, then you should use 1 1/4 cups water for 1 cup rice.

NOTE: You can double or triple the recipe and still get great results, but you shouldnt try cooking less than one cup of rice in the Instant Pot.
