Easy INSTANT POT RIBS Recipe

Pat the ribs dry and remove the membrane. The membrane is the slippery tough white layer found on the bone side of the ribs .

To remove it, slide, lift and loosen the membrane with a butter knife. Once theres enough loosened for you to grab on to, pull the entire membrane off.

Travelling Foodie Tip: Since the membrane is quite slippery, it is best to use a paper towel to pull off the membrane.

Make your rub in a bowl . Cut the ribs in half and apply dry rub generously on both ribs.

On the Instant Pot inner pot, add the liquid mixture, place the trivet and put the ribs on top. Note: You can use the air fryer basket too if using Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer.

Put the lid on the Instant Pot and set Pressure Cook on High for 20 minutes then a 20-minute Natural Release followed by Quick Release .

Remove the ribs and coat generously with barbecue sauce on all sides.

Serving Instant Pot Ribs

  • Instant Pot Ribs, 2 Racks: For a crowd, you can cook two racks of Instant Pot ribs at the same time. Simply place two racks on the trivet, overlapping one inside the other if needed. The pressure cook time does not change .
  • Sauce It Up: While you dont *need* extra barbecue sauce on the side, my personal favorite way to eat ribs is good and slathered. Look for sauce without high fructose corn syrupthough I admit that unless Im making the barbecue sauce from scratch, ribs with Sweet Baby Rays do always seem to be a hit.
  • Side Dish Ideas: Instant Pot ribs and potatoes is a classic combo. Try these easy Crock Pot Baked Potatoes, make-ahead Crockpot Breakfast Potatoes crispy Baked Fries, or keep it simple with potato chips.

Can I Finish The Ribs On The Grill

Yes, you can! In fact, finishing them on the grill is a great option when you dont want to heat up the oven, if the oven is already in use, or if you want to add a smoky flavor to them. We love to finish these Instant Pot pork ribs on our Traeger wood-fired pellet grill because they taste like youve been tending the grill all day. And honestly, if you didnt tell them that you didnt, no one would ever know.

What Makes This Instant Pot Recipe So Good

Once you try this Instant Pot Baby Back Ribs, you wont have to order them at restaurants again! Heres why its so good:

Easy. Once you make this Instant Pot Pork Ribs, youll realize how easy it is to make. It uses repeatable steps that always comes out perfect.

Cheap. Buying baby back ribs in the grocery costs around $15. In restaurants, they tend to be quite expensive, usually more than $25, and it can even be a hit or miss with the quality. But these Instant Pot Pork Ribs are always delicious and better than a lot of the ones in restaurants!

Flexible. A lot of the ingredients are flexible so the possibilities are endless with what you can play around. For example, you can use spareribs or beef ribs instead of baby back ribs. You can use a different sauce instead of BBQ. I once did Instant Pot Jerk Ribs.

Versatile. BBQ Baby Back Ribs are definitely one of the perfect dishes for the Instant Pot Duo Crisp + Air Fryer because it allows you to pressure cook and air fry all in one pot. However, you can still do the caramelization in other ways by broiling in the oven or air frying separately, and Ive included them here too. Or you can even just skip the caramelization and stick with delicious pressure cooked ribs.

No Grill. This is very important for me because I live in a condo where a grill isnt allowed. By using the oven or air fryer, were able to make these BBQ ribs look like theyre grilled due to the caramelization of the BBQ sauce.

Can These Instant Pot Ribs Be Made In Advance

    Yes. You can make Instant Pot ribs ahead of time. Pressure cook the ribs up to 2 days ahead. Cool completely and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. When ready to eat, brush them with the BBQ sauce and warm them up in a preheated 350 degree oven until warm through. Brush them again generously with the BBQ sauce, and place them under the broiler for about 5 minutes or until slightly charred.;

You can also heat up the ribs on a grill brushing them with sauce as they reheat.

Can I Make Baby Back Ribs In My Slow Cooker

    Absolutely! If you dont have an Instant Pot, these can be made in the slow cooker with just a few adjustments namely the amount of liquid and the cooking time. Slow cookers require less cooking liquid so youll want to reduce the water or broth to ½ cup. Plan to cook your ribs for about 8 hours on low or 4 hours on high or until tender.;

How To Remove The Membrane From Baby Back Ribs

Most ribs still have the membrane or silver skin on them. The membrane is the white shiny connective tissue on the back of the ribs that can make meat a little chewy. Removing this from your meat can give you a more tender end product. Check to make sure the membrane on your ribs has been removed and if it hasnt, follow these steps to remove it:

    • Flip the rib over so that the meat side is face down and bone side is facing up.
    • Starting on one side, gently slide a knife under the membrane and pull it off just a little bit. Once you have enough membrane to hold on to you should just be able to pull it all off in one pull. Just make sure you are pulling from one side all the way to the other to ensure youre removing the entire thing.

What Is The Trivet For The Instant Pot

If youve made a recipe in the Instant Pot before, you may or may not have used a trivet. A trivet is usually a metal stand that is 1-4 inches in height that allows you to cook food without the food sitting in the liquid. Liquid is needed for the pressure cooker to come up to pressure. Without added liquid no recipe will work at all.

Below are some of my favorite trivets for the Instant Pot

    • Super basic trivet without arms. This one is good for making things in circle containers that would normally be a really tight fit, like my Instant Pot Low Carb Cheesecake.
    • Taller trivets are really nice because they allow you to cook more than one food item at a time. You can be cooking something in the liquid below and then cooking something in a container above.
    • Some trivets are now being designed with steamer baskets built in. This is super handy because it will save you from doing one more dish!

    Removing The Rib Membrane

    Instant Pot Ribs

One key initial step when making ribs no matter how you cook them is removing the membrane from the back of the ribs. It is not pleasant to chew on and it gets in the way of heat getting through and evenly cooking the ribs. Some people leave it on, but I never do.

To remove the membrane, work at its edge with a knife until you can solidly grab the corner; of it and peel it off. Just give it a good firm, but even, pull. Often the membrane will peel right off but, since it is very thin, other times it will break and you will have to pull it off in pieces.

Whats In These Instant Pot Bbq Ribs

Any barbecue master will tell you the flavor in bbq ribs starts with the rub. This mix of seasonings and salts is what helps break down the fibers in the meat to create not only flavor, but that tender, fall off the bone bite we all crave.

My mix is actually my husbands magic dust hes used for years in the secret to our oven-baked barbecue baby back ribs, the method we used and swore by forever that now just might be have found its match with the Instant Pot.

My homemade dry rib rub seasoning is a mixture of:

    • Parika
    • Cayenne pepper

How To Make Instant Pot Ribs:

  • Season the ribs all over with a dry spice rub.
  • Add liquid to the bottom of the instant pot.
  • Curl the ribs around the instant pot, with the meat side facing out. If your ribs are already cut in sections then stand them up in the same manner, lining them up around the pot.
  • Cook them on high pressure. Cooking times will vary just slightly depending on the type of ribs you use, your elevation, and if you want them tender to the bite, or fall-off-the-bone tender.
  • When the ribs are finished cooking you can slather them in your favorite store-bought or homemade bbq sauce.

I also like to stick them under the broiler for just a few minutes, to let the bbq sauce caramelize and char a little bit. YUM!

How To Make The Best Instant Pot Ribs

The Best Instant Pot Baby Back Ribs Recipe

Unlike other rib cooking methods, which take hours and require active tending, making ribs in the Instant Pot is hands free and comparably fast. The Instant Pot locks in moisture and makes the ribs tender in a fraction of the time.

In addition to the use of the Instant Pot itself, I have a few key tips to ensure your Instant Pot rib efforts are richly rewarded.

    • Use a Dry Rub. To start your ribs on a delicious note, cover them generously with a delicious dry rub.

The rib rub recipe Ive included here uses basic pantry staples you probably already have, like chili powder, garlic powder, and cayenne, to give the ribs loads of flavor. If youd like to make the ribs more spicy, feel free to bump up the amount of cayenne.

To balance the spice, I also add brown sugar to my Instant Pot Ribs rub. I grew up loving the brown sugar/molasses flavor of Kansas City BBQ, and the brown sugar reminds me of some of my favorite KC BBQ joints.

The amount of brown sugar isnt overly sweet by any means. Youll love it here.

    • Liquid Smoke. It might sound fancy, but liquid smoke is widely available at most grocery stores . You can also buy it online.

Please dont skip the liquid smoke. Because we are cooking the ribs quickly , the liquid smoke provides flavor that youd typically only get via longer cooking methods .

The two more common types of ribs are baby back ribs and spare ribs.
