Instant Pot Jasmine Rice – Easy and Tasty Recipe

Don’t skip the washing step! The rice must be clear before cooking.

You can use the oil of your choice in this recipe. Extra virgin olive oil is always a great option, but toasted sesame or coconut adds a lovely subtle flavor to the rice. Alternatively, use butter or ghee.

To make more flavorful rice, use broth or stock instead of water.

Need to make less rice? Whatever amount of rice you want to make, just remember the ratio of water to rice is always 1:1, so 2 cups of rice call for 2 cups of water, 4 cups of rice needs 4 cups of water, and so on.

When making Instant Pot jasmine rice, use the High setting to cook the rice this will give you the best results.

How To Make Instant Pot Jasmine Rice

This recipe is a fool-proof, hands-off way to cook jasmine rice in under 30 minutes!

  • Rinse the rice: Place dry Jasmine rice into a large mesh strainer, then rinse thoroughly under cold water for a couple of minutes, stirring to make sure you get all the rice.
  • Combine all ingredients: place the rinsed rice into your instant pot, then add in the water or broth and salt. Spread the rice into an even layer on the bottom of the pot.
  • Cook the rice: Place the lid on the instant pot, select Manual or Pressure Cook, and cook on high pressure for 3 minutes. After the cook time is up, let the pressure naturally release, then serve as desired.
    • Rinse rice well in a strainer
    • Add rice and water to Instant Pot
    • Open up the lid to perfectly cooked rice!

What Type Of Pot To Use

One thing I really like in this method is that it doesnt really matter what type of pot you use. Some say you should use a nonstick one, but in my experience thats not necessary. Just make sure that you have a very low setting on your cooktop, and your rice wont stick to the bottom.

What is important though is that you have a perfectly matching lid for your pot. This way you can almost steam the rice, and thats what produces perfect results with these ratios. If you have a glass lid thats an added benefit, as you can check if the water is simmering without removing the lid.

Types Of Jasmine Rice To Use

Jasmine rice is a type of long grain rice and it comes in white and brown varieties. Unlike other variations of rice like short grain or medium grain rice, jasmine rice is plump and only slightly sticky due to the low levels of amylopectin. This starch determines the stickiness between the rice grains after cooking.

The difference between white and brown jasmine rice is the same as other varieties, meaning the latter still has the bran intact and will have an even less sticky consistency after cooking and may have nuttier notes of flavor and aroma.

Its typically grown in areas like South East Asia like Thailand. Specifically, jasmine rice made from Thailand that is labeled hom mali is the highest grade of jasmine rice and has the strongest aroma. Its no coincidence that some of the best dishes to pair with jasmine rice come from Thailand, like Thai Panang curry, Thai basil fried rice, and pad Thai.

    Instant Pot Sticky Rice

    Instant Pot Jasmine Rice

Think of it like sushi rice you get with a piece of fish on top and a bit of wasabi. You know how its really stuck together into one piece, it is more like that if you swish it as I explain below. I have detailed information and ingredients listed below but heres a quick rundown.

    • Pour uncooked Jasmine white rice into pot with water. Pick up pot and swirl contents around so water gets cloudy.
    • Close and lock pressure cooker lid and make sure to turn steam valve to seal. Set to high pressure for 6 minutes. DO NOT release the pressure when done.
    • Instead let it sit for a 8 minute natural release when done.
    • Then let rest of pressure out and lift lid. Fluff rice and serve immediately for best results.

Seriously you can add the rice to just about everything. You can make pressure cooker fried rice with it, eat it plain, or serve with slices of air fryer cube steak on top. It only takes about 15 minutes to cook and sit in the pot to fluff so its easy and fast.

Swirl, sticky, separated or however you prefer to make it I assure youll never make it another way again. I bet you will be like myself and give away your old fashioned countertop cooker and never use the stovetop again. That way takes forever waiting for the water to boil. I havent done that method in I cant tell you how long.

For this reason, brown rice is considered to be a healthier and more nutritious alternative to white rice. The outer layers being intact also contribute to it’s nutty and chewy texture. Let’s check out the calorie and carb content of both varieties:

Instant Pot Setting & Cooking Time

Rice is primarily cooked in the instant pot at a preset LOW pressure for 12 minutes. But jasmine rice is softer, and though you can use this preset for it as well, it may come out gooey than needed. So, its best to use the Manual/Pressure Cook settings for jasmine rice at about three to four minutes. After this time, an additional ten minutes is allowed for the instant pot to release pressure naturally. Also, whether releasing the valve or removing the lid of the pressure cooker, be sure to protect yourself from the steam. Try using a long wooden spoon to adjust the pressure valve.

Reheating in the microwave – Place leftover jasmine rice into a microwave safe bowl and add 1 tablespoon of water for each 1 cup of cooked jasmine rice. Stir the rice using a fork. Break up any clumps in the rice.

Reheating on the stove top – Place leftover jasmine rice into a saucepan and stir with a fork to break up clumps. Drizzle water or a small amount of oil in to help add moisture back to the rice.

Heat on a low setting for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cooked rice is warmed through completely. Add water as necessary during the heating process to keep your rice fluffy and moist.

    About Rinsing The Rice:

Why is it that I recommend rinsing the rice before cooking it?

Doing so helps it from foaming up while it’s cooking, which would then cause it to come out of the valve and basically make a big mess.

In turn, this helps the rice retain its moisture content. Nobody likes dry rice!

After seeing how easy this is to make in your Instant Pot, you can confidently ditch your rice cooker and say buh-bye to making rice on the stovetop…

    That’s too high maintenance!

Instant Pot Jasmine Rice Recipe (Step by Step + Video ...

There are several recipes out there for cooking jasmine rice in an instant pot. However, cooking it this way might lead to several issues if youre not careful.

The rice could turn out too mushy, there might be some burning, or you might just end up dirtying a lot of pots. When you follow the right recipe, however, the risk of problems goes down.

If youre making al dente jasmine rice, which has a firm bite, start by rinsing and draining the rice. Cook it on high pressure for three minutes, and then, use the natural pressure release for 10 minutes.

For a softer consistency of jasmine rice, you should cook it for five minutes using high pressure after rinsing and draining. Then, use the natural pressure release for 10 minutes.

Heres a step-by-step recipe for making jasmine rice using an instant pot:

  • Pour the drained rice and water in the pot. The grains should be submerged in the water
  • Secure the instant pots lid and start the pressure cooking according to the result you want
  • When the timer dings, open the pot and use a fork to fluff up the rice
  • You can also prevent too many pots from getting dirty by first fluffing the rice inside the instant pot as soon as its cooked. After this, take out the steel inset and put it on the kitchen counter. This step will prevent the bottom grains from sticking to the pot.
