What Is The Ratio Of Beans To Water In The Instant Pot

Instant Pot Dried Pinto Beans Recipe

When cooking beans in the Instant Pot, youll use 2 1/2 cups of water for every 1 cup of dry beans. Ive tried using less than that, but since beans expand as they cook, the ones that arent fully submerged in liquid will cook unevenly.

You can definitely use more water, if you want to, but its not necessary for pinto beans. Since this recipe calls for seasoning, you wont want to dilute the flavor any more, either.

Instant Pot Cooking Times & Tips For Dried Beans

I do all types of beans the same way. Here are some Instant Pot pressure cooking time guidelines for a few of my favorites:

  • Black Beans: 25-30 minutes
  • Great Northern: 30-35 minutes
  • Pinto Beans: 30-35 minutes
  • Garbanzo Beans: 40-45 minutes
  • Cannellini Beans: 40-45 minutes

Remember cook times are just a guideline. Not only does your personal preference and use come into play, but there are also lots of variables in the beans themselveslike how long they have sat on a shelf that can increase cooking time.

It’s easy to check them and continue cooking if they aren’t done enough.

Remember it will initially take 10-15 minutes for the instant pot to come to full pressure and another 10-15 minutes to naturally release.

Do You Need To Soak The Beans Before They Are Cooked In A Pressure Cooker

As I mention above, you dont need to presoak the beans. However, according to the recipe booklet that comes with your Instant Pot, if you pre-soak the beans for 4-6 hours in water , the cooking time will be reduced to 7-9 minutes.

If you have time to presoak the beans, as you can see, the cooking time is cut drastically. Soak or no soak? Decide which way works best in your schedule.

Or maybe slow cooking works best for you, I get that! Check out how to make slow cooker pinto beans.

Which Pressure Cooker To Use

No Soak Instant Pot Pinto Beans

You’ll need a 6- to 8-quart pressure cooker to make a batch of beans. I use a 6-quart Instant Pot, but you can follow this basic method for other electric pressure cookers and stovetop pressure cookers as well.

  • Cannellini beans
  • Chickpeas
  • Red kidney beans, though I recommend boiling the beans for about 10 minutes first to break down the lectins.

Cooking time will vary based on the bean variety and the age of your beans. Check out the cooking time table in the recipe for specific times!

What Is The Ratio Of Beans To Water

In the Instant Pot, the ratio of beans to water that I use most often is 4:1 . This works out to be 4 cups water for every 8 ounces of beans.

This allows for plenty of liquid, which turns into a flavorful broth as the beans cook.

You can use a little bit less water if you like. The amount of water doesn’t have to be exact. A good rule of thumb is to make sure there is about 2 inches of water above the dried beans.

However, as I discuss in my book, Fresh Flavors for the Slow Cooker, the slow cooking function on the multi-cooker is designed differently than a traditional slow cooker and can be a bit trickier to manage . I use my multi-cooker almost exclusively for pressure cooking, although you can absolutely use the slow cooker function for many of the slow cooker recipes in my book .

Perfect Instant Pot Pinto Beans

Perfect Instant Pot pinto beans are a snap to make with the Instant Pot! These beans are excellent in tacos, on nachos, in a taco bowl, or anywhere else you would use beans with a Mexican flavor. I love beans, but they used to require quite a bit of time. I would make a big batch and freeze them so that I could have them on hand when wanted, but now I make smaller batches in my Instant Pot because they are so quick and easy to make. A bonus is I have more space in my freezer!

The Instant Pot can make beans from dry to done in about an hour! I still like to soak my beans, however. We in the traditional foods camp, believe in soaking, souring, or sprouting our grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes whenever possible to release their phytates. Phytates are what keep these foods from sprouting too soon, before conditions are just right. These phytates bind up some of the minerals in these nutritious foods, saving them for when the seed needs them. So, to get the most nutrition out of your grains, legumes, seeds, and nuts, you should soak, sprout, or sour them. A very important side benefit of this is that these items are much easier on the digestion. With so many people having digestion issues these days, this is a benefit that shouldnt be ignored.
