How to Cook Pasta in the Instant Pot (Regular & Gluten-Free!)

Gluten-free pasta production has come a long way and these days, if cooked properly, you will hardly tell the difference between regular and gluten-free varieties. Making the dough of gluten-free pasta is different and uses a combination of flours to get the best results. That is, to get a similar protein content and stretch of the dough and to get a similar texture. Usually, you will find a mixture of brown rice and corn flour often, quinoa flour or lentil flour might be added for extra protein.

We find that corn, brown rice and quinoa flour tends to have the most similar texture to regular pasta.

Even though the texture is quite similar, gluten-free pasta tends to be starchier and expands more while cooking, therefore it needs a little extra cooking liquid. As a rule of thumb, add an extra 1/4-1/2 cup or so. Adding salt and fat is the same for regular and gluten-free pasta!

It also means that when overcooked, gluten-free pasta really doesnt hold its texture or firmness well and is much softer and mushier than regular pasta. Therefore, the main rule with gluten-free pasta is DONT OVERCOOK IT!

Spaghetti Squash Is A Great Pasta Substitute

It wasnt til I went Paleo that I finally sampled a spaghetti squashbut I undercooked it and turned my nose up at the squeaky, bland vegetable strands. But heyIm open-minded. I gave spaghetti squash a second chance at a swanky vegetarian restaurant, and thats when I finally had an epiphanythis gourds pretty awesome if its properly cooked and smothered in a delicious sauce. Its not quite a pasta substitute, but this noodle-y veggie is a fabulous vehicle for an umami-packed sauce.

Calculating Cooking Time For Pasta

Check out the recommended cooking time on the packet of the pasta. Most pasta cooks in 8 to 12 minutes. Often, you will have a range, say 9-11 minutes in boiling water. Al dente means its cooked but still has a little firmness when you bite through it, so it maintains its structure without being too soft or mushy. Al dente is the Italian way!

To cook the pasta in the Instant Pot, you would divide its regular cooking time by 2 and deduct 1 extra minute. So it would be -1 minute=3.5 minutes at HIGH pressure followed by a quick release of the pressure. On average, 4-4.5 minutes should work for most types of pasta.

How To Cook Pasta In Instant Pot

Cooking plain pasta in the Instant Pot is as simple as adding your dry pasta, water, and kosher salt to the pot, pushing a button, and then walking away until its done!

NO stirring so the pasta doesnt stick, NO watching to make sure it doesnt boil over, and NO constantly checking to see if its perfectly al dente yet In fact, you dont even have to drain the pasta when its done, since most of the water is absorbed during the pressure cooking process.

1| Add the dry pasta, water, and kosher salt to the Instant Pot insert. Dont stir the ingredients. Just place the lid on top and turn the steam release knob to sealing.

2| Use the Manual Pressure function to cook the pasta on high pressure for 5 minutes. The Instant Pot will take about 11-12 minutes to come to pressure before the actual cooking time begins.

3| When the cook time is up, perform a quick release. The pasta is ready to serve!

How Do You Thicken Beef And Noodles

  • Stirring a cornstarch slurry into the pressure cooker at the end of the beef and noodles cooking time is the quickest and easiest approach, as well as I how I tested this recipe. If after adding the slurry and letting the broth bubble for several minutes it is still thinner than youd like, add a second slurry with 1 tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon of water.
  • Do not add dry cornstarch directly to the beef and noodles. It will seize and create lumps.
  • All-purpose flour can be used in place of cornstarch in a pinch. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of it over the sautéed onions at the end of step 2. Stir and cook it for 1 to 2 minutes until it is no longer white. Add bit of extra oil or butter if the pot becomes dry. Proceed with the recipe as directed, omitting the cornstarch slurry.
  • Do not add dry flour to the beef and noodles at the end. It will impart an odd, raw taste to the dish.

Instructions And Cooking Time

Egg noodles cook very quickly in a pressure cooker. The greatest risk is overcooking the noodles, making them very soft or even mushy.

After cooking many batches of noodles, Ive settled on the best way to make Instant Pot egg noodles.

  • Combine the water and salt in the Instant Pot.
  • Add egg noodles. Mix gently, so all of the noodles are wet, even though they arent submerged in water.
  • Cook on high pressure for 2 minutes, with a quick release. If you prefer noodles that are truly al dente, then cook on high pressure for 1 minute with a quick release.
  • After the quick pressure release, stir the noodles.
  • If the noodles arent as soft as youd like, set the lid back on the pot and let the noodles rest for a few minutes. They will continue to soften in the residual heat. They will also soften as they absorb any remaining water in the pot. After a few minutes, stir and taste again.
  • When the egg noodles are done to you liking, add a pat of butter for flavor. Remove the egg noodles immediately from the hot pressure cooker into a serving dish.
  • Our Method Of Cooking Pasta

Instant Pot Spaghetti (Pressure Cooker Spaghetti) by Pink

Our method for cooking any type of pasta in the Instant Pot is a bit different, and well explain how we came to it below. But first, here is our basic method:

  • Add dried pasta and water to nearly cover the pasta. A few pieces of pasta sticking above the water line is ok. You dont want to cook it in too much water because that lengthens the time it takes to heat and that can become a problem during the pressure release .
  • Set the Instant Pot to the cooking time of 0 minutes, and yes this is an actual cooking time and not a typo!
  • Once it comes up to pressure and hits 0 minutes, let the pressure naturally release for 3 minutes. This reads as L 00:03 on the Instant Pot.
  • Then release the remaining pressure manually.
  • So whats the science behind this? Its simple: the pasta is already cooking during the time it takes to come up to the pressure, and the pasta continues to cook when the pressure cooker clicks off. The reason we do it this way is to minimize the Instant Pot from boiling over with starch. This looks like starch spewing out of the pressure release knob.

After eight minutes on high pressure, release the pressure valve to do a quick release of pressure, carefully open the pot, and give the whole thing a swift stir. The pasta will be too hot to eat and will continue to cook as you remove the pot from your pressure cooker and get your bowls ready. A few minutes of cooling and a flurry of Parmesan cheese will make this the perfect weeknight dinner.

    Instant Pot Pasta Sauce

Unless Im following a specific recipe, I prefer to cook the pasta in water and cook the sauce pot-in-pot above the pasta.

However, you can cook pasta in a sauce. If you do this, it is SO IMPORTANT to add enough liquid to the pot. Many jarred sauces include thickeners, which can create a film on the bottom of the cooking pot that will change how your pasta cooks and may lead to a Burn notice.

If the sauce is thin when you remove the lid after pressure cooking, turn off the Instant Pot. The pasta will continue to absorb liquid as it cools.

If the sauce has far too much liquid, select Sauté and simmer the pasta until the sauce is somewhat thickened.

How To Make Pasta In The Instant Pot

Regardless of the type of pasta, the methodology is the same. To make 8 ounces of pasta you will need 1 cup of broth and 1 tablespoon of butter. I use water with Better than Bouillon rather than broth, but the same methodology is in place for cooking the pasta.

For the cooking time for the pasta, you cut the time in half in the cooking directions and subtract one minute. So, for pasta whose directions say 9-11 minutes, I cut 10 minutes in half and subtract one minute. It will cook for 4 minutes on high pressure. Now, the pasta like this thin spaghetti is ready for whatever you are making. I tend to make macaroni and cheese or cheesy spaghetti. If you want to make a cheesy spaghetti, go ahead and add milk or cream, parmesan, and mozzarella cheese to the Instant Pot Pasta.

Mix the cheese and cream into the pasta and you are ready to serve. I serve this pasta with a great grilled chicken, baked brown sugar and garlic chicken or even these pan-fried pork chops. The cheesy spaghetti pasta is a great side dish that my kids literally could eat their weight in.

I totally recommend using an Instant Pot Ultra. It has more settings and has been my preferred Instant Pot between the Ultra and Duo.

Taste & season with kosher salt and ground black pepper if desired.

    How To Reduce Pasta Foam

I’ve learned some great tips and tricks from all of you in the comments below, here is a summary of the knowledge I’ve gathered over time:

    • Add Fat
    • Oil or butter will reduce foaming. I add about 1 tablespoon per 8 ounces of pasta
  • Rinse pasta
  • Rinse the pasta 2 3 times before you cook it I wouldn’t say this is the perfect solution, but it does seem to help
  • Place a trivet over the pasta
  • As bubbles start to rise, the trivet will pop them and keep foam from reaching the valve. This doesn’t work perfectly every time either, but again, it seems to help especially if you use a slow pressure release
  • Intermittent Pressure Release
  • Turn knob to quickly release the pressure. If starchy water starts to spray through the valve, switch the knob to a sealed position, wait 30 seconds, then switch the valve back to release, repeating this process as many times as needed usually 2 -3 times
  • Slow Pressure Release
  • Turn the knob only slightly so the pressure is released slowly. This will take a bit longer but will cut down on foaming considerably and prevent overcooked pasta
  • My personal go-to method
  • Add fat, place a trivet over the pasta, use a quick release of the pressure and wait and see if there is going to be enough starchy water spraying out for me to want to close the knob again. Then I use the intermittent or slow-release method to release the remaining pressure.
  • By Step Instructions For Instant Pot Pasta

The steps for cooking pasta in the electric pressure cooker couldn’t be easier! Simply:

    • Add liquid and pasta: Add water, pasta, salt and oil. If cooking short pasta , give it a stir. If cooking spaghetti or other noodle shaped pasta, break in half and lay in two batches in a criss-cross pattern. Do not stir.
    • Set cooking time: Close the lid on sealing position. Using the rule of thumb, calculate the cooking time for your specific pasta shape. Set Pressure Cook/Manual for the calculated pasta time.
    • Perform an intermittent quick release: After the cooking time is done, use the intermittent pressure release technique and release all the pressure. Open the lid when the pin drops.
    • Rest, sauce and serve: Stir the pasta and separate any clumps using two forks. Let the pasta rest for 3 to 5 minutes as this lets it absorb the leftover liquid. For a simple and satisfying meal, stir in your favorite sauce, such as spaghetti sauce or pesto.

Formula: Calculate The Perfect Pasta Cook Time

For perfect Instant Pot pasta, theres a pretty simple formula to find the right cooking time: take the time listed on the box, cut it in half, then subtract an additional minute.

For example, for bowtie pasta, if the package says to cook for 12 minutes, Id pressure cook it for 5 minutes. .

This formula works for regular pasta, whole wheat pasta, gluten-free pasta, rice-based pasta, or pretty much any kind.

Tip: If the cook time is an odd number, I generally round down.

Is This Spaghetti Noodle Recipe Keto Friendly

    Instant Pot Mini

Theres no need to fret though as you can still definitely make ridiculously good keto friendly spaghetti with your instant pot. Youll just need to get a little bit creative with your ingredient choices.

One of the most common ways to make keto style spaghetti is to simply swap out the spaghetti noodles for spiralized veggie noodles. The two most popular choices for low carb veggie spaghetti are typically either squash or zucchini.

Plain buttered egg noodles is awesome because its easy to prepare and delicious on its own and its kid friendly as well.

However, you can always make egg noodles or any buttered noodles taste even better by simply adding flavors of your choice.

I have used tried using sauteed onions along with garlic powder, oregano powder, black pepper powder etc for more flavor. You can even sprinkle more spices like red chili flakes if you like it spicy.

Sauteing onions is more tasty and add more flavor, but just using onion powder is way more easier which simplified the recipe.

Most of the time, we go for buttered noodles as a side or when we are in a hurry, so adding onion powder, garlic powder and any flavor of your choice will help you make flavorful buttered noodles which is also more easy to do!
