How to Cook a Frozen Steak in the Instant Pot

Instant pot pork chops freeze well as long as they are properly wrapped to prevent freezer burn. An airtight plastic container will work well, and for double protection put the container in a Ziploc bag. Or wrap them in freezer paper and then put the freezer paper in a Ziploc bag.

They will stay fresh for 3-4 months. When it comes time to eat the instant pot pork chops, then take them out the night before and thaw them out slowly in the refrigerator. Then follow the heating instructions in the previous subheading.

Instant Pot Ribs From Frozen

These ribs start from a frozen state, so dinner can be made without planning ahead. Each rib portion should have 3 to 4 ribs. I use a spice called “Red Rocks Hickory Smoke Seasoning” from Savory Spice Shop®, but you may use what you have. With only 3 ingredients, it doesn’t get much easier!

1 rack frozen baby back ribs, membrane removed and cut into 4 slabs
¼ cup barbecue sauce

Steps:

  • Pour water into a multi-functional pressure cooker . Set trivet inside. Sprinkle seasoning liberally over the frozen ribs and set on top of the trivet. Close and lock the lid.
  • Select high pressure according to manufacturer’s instructions set timer for 45 minutes. Allow 10 to 15 minutes for pressure to build.
  • Release pressure using the natural-release method according to manufacturer’s instructions, about 15 minutes. Unlock and remove the lid.
  • Set an oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source and preheat the oven’s broiler.
  • Transfer ribs to a rimmed baking sheet. Brush with barbecue sauce. Broil until glazed, 4 to 5 minutes.

Pork Chops can vary in the pressure cooker based on size, thickness and of course marbling. You will need to vary the cooking time slightly if you have different cuts of pork chops.

I use chops about 3/4 to 1 thick with bone in. Just like roast chicken, bone in meat is tender and has tons of flavor. If you have pork steaks they come out melt in your mouth tender but youll need to add a little bit of time if theyre thick. I personally wouldnt recommend thin cut pork chops in the pressure cooker.

  • Bone-In Center Cut Chops about 15-18 minutes .
  • Boneless Loin Chops I cook to 8-10 minutes.
  • Pork Steaks: Pork steaks 1 thick need about 20 minutes, they come out very tender.

If you have frozen pork chops and are pressed for time, you can make Instant Pot frozen pork chops but youll need to add about 5 minutes or so extra. Skip the searing step. Be aware that the Instant Pot will take longer to come up to pressure when you are starting from frozen.

While the recipe calls for chuck roast, you can substitute flank steak or London broil. Readers have also used skirt steak with this recipe, though its a little chewier cut of meat.

Also, if you want to substitute chicken for the beef, go for it! Just change out chicken broth for the beef broth. Dice the chicken into bite-size pieces and reduce the cook time to 3 minutes at high pressure.

My Tips On Seasoning Sous Vide Steak

My preference is to season steak before freezing it.

This is key for busy days in my house. When I get an order of beef in the mail, or stock up at the store, Ill take a moment to vacuum seal the steaks in individual bags with seasonings like salt and pepper. At a minimum Ill use salt and garlic. If Im feeling fancy Ill use a little sous vide steak marinade.

    • Water you can put the steaks in a plastic bag and then put the bag with steaks in a bowl with cold water. Leave the top of the bag open and only put the steaks underwater. The cold water will thaw the steaks but this can take between 30 minutes to an hour
    • Microwave you can thaw steak in a microwave but I am not a fan. When you put the steak in the microwave and you do not pay close attention you can get slightly cooked and watery steaks
    • Air Fryer cook your steak in the Air Fryer and you do not need to thaw it first

    Out of all these options, the Air Fryer is your best bet because you will get tasty delicious steak without losing a lot of extra time.

    There are a couple of things to know about cooking steaks from frozen, the first is choosing the right steaks and the second is proper preparation. You cant just throw 3 or 4 frozen-together-steaks in the oven and expect them to come out with crispy crusts and perfectly done interiors.

    Steaks that are between 1 and 1 1/2 inches thick are best for this method. I have found that porterhouse, rib-eye, or T-bone work very well. If you arent familiar with these cuts, Beef, Its Whats for Dinner has a great resource.

    Different Cuts Of Steak

    Filet mignon is cut from beef tenderloin. It is incredibly tender and flavorful. This cut of meat is expensive due to its extremely tender texture.

    Ribeye steak is heavily marbled and extra juicy. It comes from the ribs and can be boneless or bone in.

    Strip steak is another common cut of beef. It is cut from the short loin.

    Sirloin steaks are cut from the sirloin, which is near the back of the animal. These boneless steaks are more affordable than other cuts.

    Skirt steak is long and thin. It is cute from the belly. Skirt steak can be incredibly flavorful despite its abundance of connective tissue.

    Flank steak is very similar to skirt steak. It is slightly more wide and thick than skirt steak.
