Why Do You Put Boiled Eggs In Ice Water

The idea of placing the eggs in ice cold water helps the eggs to peel easily, but it also prevents the discolored yolk. The strange color that sometimes forms around hard boiled yolks is a reaction of the sulfur in the egg white and the iron in the yolk . By placing the warm eggs in ice water, it stops the cooking process and helps to stop the discoloration.

I will never forget my first Easter I spent away from my family.

We were living in Georgia at the time and invited friends over for an Easter Egg hunt and Ham Dinner. While the ham and scalloped potatoes were delicious, the eggs were a complete disaster.

After coloring the eggs, our guests cracked a few open for a snack to find that they were not fully cooked!

    How To Peel Eggs

One of the major quandaries when troubleshooting this recipe was how to easily peel a hard-boiled egg once its cooked.

    • Rolling it Out:; Hitting the rounded bottom of the egg and then vigorously rolling the egg resulted in an egg that was easier to peel.

Cooking Methods For Instant Pot Eggs

To make things as easy for you as possible, the methods shown are based on the size of the eggs. This way, you can be sure that your Instant Pot eggs will cook perfectly!

  • It doesnt matter whether you cook your eggs in a 6-quart Instant Pot or another size; cooking times will be the same.
  • If you have a 6-quart Instant Pot, place 1 cup of water into the bottom of the pot. For an 8-quart Instant Pot, you will need to add 2 cups of water.
  • Place the eggs into an egg rack or stack them onto a trivet. Close the lid, set the valve to sealing position, and manually set to high pressure.
  • I dont recommend leaving Instant Pot eggs in an ice bath for longer than 60 seconds. After one minute, the cooking process is stopped completely, but the eggs will still be warm. All that extra minutes in an ice bath will do is make your eggs cold.
  • When the cooking time ends, performing an immediate quick pressure release is super important. Turn the valve to the venting position; open the pot as soon as the safety pin drops .

Tips For Instant Pot Boiled Eggs

  • Make as many eggs as you want . I’ve cooked a single soft-boiled egg in the Instant Pot , but you can cook up to a dozen, or as many will nestle comfortably on the steaming insert.
  • Always add water. The eggs are actually steaming when they cook in the Instant Pot, and you’ll need to pour in water to provide that steam heat. Pour in 1 to 2 cups of water before sealing the machine.
  • Cook on low pressure. It might not be good for much, but the low pressure setting comes in handy here. High pressure will also cook your eggs, but the yolks are more likely to come out chalky if overcooked . Low pressure is much more forgiving here.
  • Use the quick release. Not only does using the quick release decrease your wait time, it gives you more precise control over the texture of your finished eggs. The eggs will continue to cook as the pressure naturally falls, since there’s no way to remove them immediately to an ice bath, so consider than when determining total cook time. To keep your hands at a safe distance from the jets of steam, use the end of a wooden spoon to maneuver the nozzle into the release position. I also often drape a dish towel over the vent so as to avoid plunging the kitchen into humidity.
  • Plunge the eggs into an ice bath. Once the pressure has been released, stop the residual cooking that will make all your eggs hard-boiled in just a few minutes by transferring them immediately to an ice bath. Plus, it’s easiest to peel eggs under water.
  • Tips For The Best Instant Pot Eggs:

    • Timings below are for large eggs. For medium eggs, reduce cook time by 1 minute and increase by 1 minute for extra large eggs.
    • Start with refrigerated eggs.
    • Its ok to stack eggs on the rack, but eggs should not touch the water or walls of the instant pot.
    • Transfer cooked eggs to a bowl of ice water right away to prevent overcooking.
    • We use a 6 Qt 7-in-1 Instant Pot Duo. You may need to experiment timings using a smaller or larger pressure cooker.
