How To Cook Ribs In An Instant Pot

To prep the ribs, wash and pat dry to remove any excess moisture. Check if the membrane is still there on the boney side, as usually it is already removed. However, if its still there, heres how you remove it:

Place the ribs upside down on a cutting board, and using a butter knife slide under the membrane on the back of the bone. It is a thin layer, so you dont need to go deep. Once you have loosened it, take a paper towel and grab onto it with one hand. Hold the ribs down with the other hand and gently pull on the membrane, It should come off easily.

Remove The Membrane From The Ribs

Your ribs may still have the connective tissue membrane on the back of the ribs. It looks white and shiny. Sometimes its still there and sometimes the membrane was already removed. Check to make sure the membrane on your ribs has been removed. If not, follow these steps to remove it:

  • Flip the ribs so the top is face down.
  • Slide a butter knife under the membrane and rip it off.
  • Use your fingers to yank it up and off the ribs

What Is The Trivet For The Instant Pot

If youve made a recipe in the Instant Pot before, you may or may not have used a trivet. A trivet is usually a metal stand that is 1-4 inches in height that allows you to cook food without the food sitting in the liquid. Liquid is needed for the pressure cooker to come up to pressure. Without added liquid no recipe will work at all.

Below are some of my favorite trivets for the Instant Pot

  • Super basic trivet without arms. This one is good for making things in circle containers that would normally be a really tight fit, like my Instant Pot Low Carb Cheesecake.
  • Taller trivets are really nice because they allow you to cook more than one food item at a time. You can be cooking something in the liquid below and then cooking something in a container above.
  • Some trivets are now being designed with steamer baskets built in. This is super handy because it will save you from doing one more dish!

What type of ribs to use:

I prefer baby back ribs but you can also use spare ribs. Its important to not that your cooking time will vary, depending on your altitude and what type of ribs you choose.

How long to cook ribs in the instant pot or pressure cooker:

  • Baby Back Ribs: 25-30 Minutes
  • Spare Ribs: 30-35 Minutes
  • For low altitude, use the lower number, and for high altitude cook them a little longer.
  • Also, the longer you cook them, the more fall-off-the-bone tender they will be. If you want them tender, without falling off the bone, use a slightly lower cook time.

What size instant pot for instant pot ribs?

Any 6 quart or larger instant pot will work!

Removing the membrane from the ribs:

Depending on where you buy your ribs, they may still have the white, shiny membrane connective tissue on the back of the ribs. I buy mine from Costco and they already have the membranes removed. Check to make sure the membrane on your ribs has been removed and if it hasnt, follow these steps to remove it:

  • Just flip the ribs so the top is face down.
  • Slide your fingers or a butter knife under the membrane and rip it off.
  • No special skills needed here, just use your fingers to yank it up and off the ribs.

Do Ribs Go Bone Side Up Or Down

Lay the ribs meat side down on the sweet concoction with the meat side downbones up. Return the ribs to the smoker and continue to cook for another 2 hours or so. When the meat has pulled back and exposed the bone about 1/4 inch the ribs are done. Remove the ribs from the foil and sauce or glaze them at this point.

How To Make The Best Instant Pot Ribs:

Start with baby back ribs. We cooked two racks together, but you can cook one rack or up to three in a 6 quart or larger pressure cooker.PREPARE THE RIBS:Remove the Membrane Skin on the under side. The membrane is very thin and located on the underside of the ribs. Simply slide a butter knife under the edge to get ahold of it and then pull it off. If you cant seem to find the membrane, sometimes the membrane is removed before you get the ribs home.Once youve pulled it off, you can leave your rack of ribs in one long section or you can cut your slab of ribs into two to three sections.MIX UP THE SPICE RUB:Mix up the spice rub and massage it into the rack of ribs on both sides.Place the rack or ribs into the pressure cooker.ADD TO THE INSTANT POT:Place a metal trivet at the bottom to help keep the ribs off the bottom of the instant pot where the water and liquid is added.Add the water, liquid smoke and apple cider vinegar to the bottom of the slow cooker. Cook for 23-26 min on high for defrosted or fresh ribs.FINISH THE RIBS OFF UNDER THE BROILER:Once the ribs are finished cooking, allow the Instant Pot to naturally release the steam for a few minutes.Place the rack of ribs on a sheet pan covered in foil and brush on your favorite bbq sauce.Place the ribs under your oven broiler set to high and broil for a few minutes to crisp up the outside.

Tips And Tricks For Instant Pot Ribs:

Use your rack to keep the pork out of the liquid on the bottom. If you dont have a rack, ball up some aluminum foil and try to make a rack of some sort to elevate the pork.

My next big tip to making these Instant Pot Baby Back Pork Ribs THE LIQUID!

  • Use one cup of water
  • 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 tsp liquid smoke

The liquid smoke is optional, but highly recommended. Remember how I said I loved my husbands smoked ribs? Adding that tiny bit of liquid smoke gets that flavor in the ribs without pulling out the smoker or grill!

Once the ribs are done, youll let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes, then finish with a quick release. Carefully remove the ribs and set it on a foil-lined baking sheet.

Brush the rack down with some BBQ sauce and pop it under the broiler for just 5 minutes to get nice and bubbly.

Instant Pot Beef Ribs Vs Baby Back Ribs

To start off, beef ribs as the name states, are from a cow. These ribs are typically the ribs that come from a rib roast. These are the ribs labeled beef ribs in the grocery store. When you have a boneless ribeye, these are the bones that have been removed.

Baby back ribs are pork and are from a pig, not a cow. These ribs tend to cook much quicker and are smaller than the beef ribs. If you love baby back ribs, check out my post where I teach you how to Instant Pot baby back ribs.

Because the most requested video recipe to come my way was RIBS, and since were in the swing of summer, theres no better time than now to share this with everyone.

And so, I give you BABY BACK RIBS!

It couldnt be easier, and because were cooking these in our fabulous Instant Pot, its fall-off-the-bone style. Were talking the most tender, flavorful, messy and to-die-for ribs they way they should be!

Heres How I Made It!:

Lets start off with some unseasoned/unsauced baby back ribs . You can really use up to two racks if using a 6 qt or three if you use an 8 qt. I get mine from Costco and they come three in a pack for a very reasonable price!

Plus, the membrane is already removed. BUT if you dont have a Costco membership, no worries! Just get however many racks you want from your supermarket and peel off the membrane if its still on it.

You may also want to cut each rack in half for easy removal when done cooking since they will be SUPER tender by that stage.

Lay the ribs in a coil fashion in the Instant Pot.

Now were gonna add the magical ingredients that make these ribs so fall-off-the-bone tender and out of this world. Start with some apple juice.

Then add in some apple cider vinegar

When done cooking, your ribs are going to be super delicate due to how tender the meat has become!

Using two sets of tongs , CAREFULLY transfer the ribs from the IP

to a foil-lined baking sheet.

This will depend somewhat on the type of rib you use. Our favorite is the lean, mean baby back rib, which is cut from the spine of a pig, near the loin. What Do You Do If Instant Pot Ribs Are Tough

This recipe was designed for small baby back ribs. But sometimes even baby back ribs have more meat on them than others. If theyre on the large side or thick, they might come out of the pressure cooker tough.

First, dont panic. They simply need more time to cook.

For tough ribs, place the lid back on the pot. If they seem almost tender but not quite done, program the cooking cycle for 5 minutes. And, again, allow for a natural release.

For ribs that are very tough, program the cooking cycle for 10-12 minutes. When the cooking cycle completes, allow the pressure cooker to release pressure naturally.
