How To Make Pressure Cooker / Instant Pot White Rice

White rice is SO quick and easy to make in your pressure cooker. However, this recipe will work in ANY brand of electric pressure cooker, including the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi, and Mealthy MultiPot.

This is the recipe Ive made the most in my pressure cooker. In fact, I havent cooked rice on the stove since I tried this recipe.

I adapted the recipe for the electric pressure cooker from the Three-Minute Spiced White Basmati Rice recipe in the Veggie Queens ebook , The New Fast Food. The pressure cooker really is the best way to make fast food.

This white rice recipe works well with basmati, jasmine, short and long grain white rices.

Why Is My Rice Dry

If your rice is dry, the ratio of rice to water is off and theres not enough water. When youre experimenting with different kinds of rice, keep this in mind! Different kinds of rice absorb different amounts of water.

Another reason why your rice could be dry is if you leave it in the Instant Pot too long after cooking.

The keep warm mode will continue to heat the rice at a low temperature. This can occasionally dry out or burn the rice if you leave it too long.

How To Cook Two Cups Instant Pot Rice

Instant Pot White Rice

If you need more rice all you have to do is double the amount of rice so 2 cups of rice with two cups of water.

Always use the same cup to measure the rice and the water. Use the same settings so set to Manual or Pressure Cooking for 4 minutes on high.

Natural release for 5 minutes then quick release.

Some pressure cookers require more water. If your rice is still hard after cooking add 1/4 cup extra water.

It is a test to see what works for your pressure cooker.

How Much Rice Can You Cook In An Instant Pot

The recipe below is for cooking 2 cups of rice, which will yield about 6 cups of cooked rice. The water to rice ratio and cook time stay the same regardless of the amount of rice you are cooking.

You can cook more rice as long as you dont exceed the maximum fill lines on your pot. Rice will expand as it cooks, so you have to account for this:

  • You can double this recipe to cook 4 cups of rice in a 6 quart Instant Pot, which will make about 12 cups of cooked rice.
  • If you have an 8 quart Instant Pot , you can triple this recipe to cook 6 cups rice. This will make about 18 cups of cooked rice.

What If Rice Came Out Mushy Or Crunchy

When it comes to rice cooked in a pressure cooker, its a little bit of trial and error method for everyone. Sometimes different varieties of brown rice cook differently. Also rice could be old. I always use long grain brown rice and buy one brand. Last time my husband bought different brand and it needed maybe 1 more minute cooking. Once you find your rice you will know how long it cooks and you can add extra minutes.

If your rice comes out crunchy: stir, close the lid and let it sit for 20 minutes. It will get there. Also, next time cook for 25 minutes and let pressure come down on its own. It could be the altitude or rice and beans brand. Unfortunately, you cant re-close the lid, cook for extra 2 minutes and say that your new cooking time. You have to try recipe from scratch again to find your rice cooking time.

If your rice comes out mushy: cook a few minutes less next time. Easy-peasy.

Instant Pot Wild Rice is a staple I like to prepare during my weekly meal prep and then have on hand to add to dishes and meals throughout the week.

Want Fluffy Rice Rinse Well

I dont always remember or have time to do this step, but it helps when I do: Rinse the rice in a wire mesh colander under cold water for 30 seconds or so, or until the water runs mostly clear.

Rinsing makes the rice fluffy, and seems to make more of a difference with white rice varieties verses brown the latter is protected by its hull and doesnt tend to have a lot of extra starch clinging to the outside of the grains.

Expert Tips And Tricks

  • Rinse before cooking. You want the water to run clear, this makes the rice super fluffy and prevents it from clumping together.
  • A bit of butter. It gives great flavor and also helps to separate the grains. Oil can also be used.
  • Use the right ratio. Unlike traditional stovetop methods of cooking rice, youll only need a 1:1 water to rice ratio when cooking long grain white rice in the Instant Pot.
  • High or low. If you are changing the pressure, make sure to adjust the cook time accordingly.
  • Add flavor. Swap out the water for your favorite chicken, beef, or vegetable broth.

How Long Do I Cook The Rice

How to cook rice (sticky rice too) in the Instant Pot | Recipes | Small Family Adventures

The amount of water will remain the same. Different kinds of rice, however, take different amounts of time to cook under pressure. Wild rice and brown rice will require more time than white rice, for instance. Any variety can be cooked at either high or low pressure it comes out a little fluffier at low pressure, and a little chewier at high pressure.

Although you can cook any variety of rice on the automatic rice setting, brown rice works better on either a manual setting, or a setting thats specifically designed for whole grains, such as the Multigrain setting on the Instant Pot.

Here are my preferred cooking times for rice in the pressure cooker:

  • Brown rice: 20 minutes on high pressure for firm rice, or 22 minutes for softer grains
  • White rice: 15 minutes on low pressure for firm rice, or 17 minutes for softer grains

To Rinse Rice Or Not Rinse Rice

That is the question. There are all sorts of theories about why you should or shouldnt rinse your rice before using it.

I always rinse my rice. Why? Because that is what my father taught me to do.

When I was a little kid we would have this big pile of rice in a sack in the kitchen that was imported by ship from Surinam.

My father would take a couple of cups of rice and clean it because it had a lot of starch and starch sticks.

He always said, you never know where the rice has been or what was put on it so wash it with warm water until the water is clear.

To this day that is what I do because the rice doesnt stick together as much as it would unrinsed.

If you do not want to rinse the rice that is totally fine as well.

  • I see some liquid. My beans are dry. Dont panic, just stir. Stirring should take care of extra liquid. If beans or rice is a teeny weeny crunchy, close the lid and let sit for 10 minutes. It will get there.
  • Dont forget to add a small bunch of finely chopped cilantro. It changes everything!

    Instant Pot Jasmine Rice

Instant Pot jasmine rice is my super simple, no fail method for making perfect jasmine rice every time.

This is about as basic as it gets, yall. But I have seen and heard SO many people asking the best way to make jasmine rice in the Instant Pot. So I decided to document my tried and true method here!

I like my rice much like the kind you get from a Chinese take-out restaurant sightly sticky and soft but NOT gummy.

It really is very simple, but there are a few key steps that make ALLLLL the difference in the world.

  • Be sure and RINSE your uncooked rice first. This removes some of the starchy residue and will prevent that gummy texture/ scorch.
  • When it is cooked, turn off the keep warm setting to prevent sticking/ scorching to the bottom of the pot.
  • I have used this method for up to 3 cups jasmine rice, and it comes out perfect every time!

I will note that if you have an 8 quart model, I would go ahead and make at least two cups minimum. My model is a 6 quart, and mine will make 1 cup with no issues .

Also, this method is intended for white jasmine rice. Brown jasmine rice will have a longer cook time.
